Scottish players plying their trade outside of Scotland at the professional level
There's alot of chat about the Scots talent plying its trade outside Scotland at the mo. What with potential signings for the pro teams, young up and coming talent and Scot qualified messianic warriors from the Super 12. So I thought I'd kick off an ongoing thread dedicated to recording all of the nuggets of info Sean Lineen needs to know before he starts his new job.

Re: Scottish players plying their trade outside of Scotland at the professional level
No mention of Maitland yet! There's got to be more in the Southern Hemisphere. The SRU have obviously been looking there judging by the presence of SA/Oz boys in the under-20's. I wonder if they've been looking at the NRL too, there's got to be a few Scottish qualified guys playing league down under?

Robbie Robinson?! He'd be good to try and bring over. Electric pace.
Grayson Hart appears to have played in the same sydney team as Chris Cusiter, maybe he put a word in his ear?
On the coaching front Clark Laidlaw is highly rated and part of the most succesfull sevens team in the world, so must be decent. Being an actual born and bred scot, you would like to think he could be tempted back.

Re: Scottish players plying their trade outside of Scotland at the professional level
Yeah Robbie Robinson would be a great addition to the scotland team, the fact he can play 15, 12 and 10 would be a great coup. Been in brilliant form this season in the super xv but think he will still be a long way off an all black cap so could be tempted over these shores.
Even if there was no space at a scottish team the SRU could help get him a club in England or France which i imagine wouldn't be too hard to find a taker.

Re: Scottish players plying their trade outside of Scotland at the professional level
Where are we getting the information that confirms Robbie Robinson has a Scottish link? Never heard the name mentioned before. He's played well for the Chiefs this season. Would be a coup if we pinched him.
Slightly off topic but I see Perpignan are looking for a 9 that's also a goal kicker and have cooled their interest in Blair. McKibben anyone?

There was discussion on another forum a while back that mentioned Robbie Robinson and think it was said that one of his parents is scottish. Not sure if there are any articles online that confirm it though.

Re: Scottish players plying their trade outside of Scotland at the professional level
Yeah no worries mate, i'll get that list of RL players up, not one i compiled myself but saw it in another article.
Reckon there must be even more scots qualified out there than the ones we've identified. my folks have just come back from new zealand and pretty much every one they spoke to claimed to have a scottish background.
Having seen Brendan McKibbin playing for the tahs today i can't see there being much chance of him coming over to play for Scotland. If he keeps up the current form he'll be playing for oz this year possibly even debuting against Scotland.
If i were there Sru I'd try get Grayson Hart over, he's young, look a great player and seems to be a leader too.
nickj, I'd love that job, got too much time on my hands with being injured just now.

Was impressed with him when he was at Wasps and would be a very handy addition to the Scotland team.

To the English Championship players listed above we can now add Glen Bryce of newly promoted Jersey RFC, back three player (Scotland U20 I think).

If Sean Lineen was smart he get Brendan McKibben in a dark blue jersey as soon as possible,He was born in scotland,I presume he has a Scottish passport as he has only been in Australia for a few years, and only as a result of being coached back at Saracens by Eddie Jones. At the moment he would have two or three good Aussie halfbacks ahead of him,but he is improving, and he kicks goals.

Yeah it looks as if we have maybe missed the boat with McKibbin since he has hit a rich vain of form across in oz.
The player i'd try bring across instead is Grayson Hart, he is part of the Waratahs academy but has played for the Blues in the s14.
Think he is only 22/23 and looks a great player.

Re: Scottish players plying their trade outside of Scotland at the professional level
McKibben certainly has impressed since he was given his chance. Genia is the first choice SH for Aus and Nick Phipps is also in the running. I don’t think McKibben would have got a look in if Burgess was still playing super rugby, that’d be 3 SHs ahead of him in the queue. I can see him being included in the Aus squad for the tour, possibly debuting against us. I presume it’ll be Lineen’s job to identify potential Scots qualified players and try to convince them to move to Europe. I wonder if the SRU will subsidise the costs for these players. I would expect that to be the case for players moving to Glasgow or Edinburgh, but the prospect of one of these young guys moving to France not knowing anyone and being left to their own devices just to get a Scotland cap seems unlikely. Some will obviously be more easy to convince than others. The SRU will know about the players mentioned above and probably others and I’m sure they’ll approach every one of them. They’ve missed out on a few gems already so I want to see them make an effort to get these guys to the NH.

He got out played by Brumbies rookie 21yr old scrum half Nic White at the weekend so I would place him fourth. His main plus to get the Aus 9 jersey would be his goal kicking.

With O'Conner and Cooper out who would take over kicking duties if McKibben misses out. Beale kicked well at the weekend and Berrick Barnes is the only other player I know who kicks, but he doesn't do it regularly because of McKibben. Either way I think he's close to an Aus cap and will be concentrating on that. Unless he's told by management that he's not in line for one then I can't see him playing for Scotland any time soon.

Not heard anymore about Lachie Mitchell coming over, I would imagine the summer tour will be a good time to get him into the scotland camp to meet the players and stuff and get him on board, from the bits i've read I don't think it would be a scottish team he'd be coming to but more likely going to the aviva premiership again.

Another possible name to add to the list is a young guy in the Crusaders squad called Johnny McNicholl. Seems to be a full back and possibly winger. Not totally sure of his background but certainly seems of Scottish heritage. Any posters from New Zealand have any info on this guy?

Aye, just tie the beggar up, administer some decent drugs, and let's get him back here

And maybe he could pop to Hamilton for Robbie Robinson from the Chiefs whilst he's at it!

Toonie already went to the Chiefs (could still be there) for some coaching tips. Can only see him doing harm to any efforts to convince Robinson to play for Scotland.

Anyone heard of this guy Hamish Paterson, Kiwi born back rower, played for Auckland and playing out in Japan just now.
Looks pretty useful. Fairly Scottish sounding name, no idea though if he is Scots qualified though.

Maitland not in ABs squad, so now is maybe the time to persuade him he's really Scottish.

Think there is a job already going on behind the scenes to get Maitland plus a few other guys playing in oz and nz, Maitland makes it pretty clear on his twitter that he is half scottish, think the key to getting him is finding him a good contract in europe probably at one of the french clubs.

Yeah GeordieFalcon, Swinson has joined Glasgow and has said he wants to play for Scotland.
I'm sure i read a bit about Scott Wilson that he is playing for England at junior level just now as it means Newcastle get more money but he hasn't decided on who he'll play at senior level?
