Scottish players plying their trade outside of Scotland at the professional level
First topic message reminder :
There's alot of chat about the Scots talent plying its trade outside Scotland at the mo. What with potential signings for the pro teams, young up and coming talent and Scot qualified messianic warriors from the Super 12. So I thought I'd kick off an ongoing thread dedicated to recording all of the nuggets of info Sean Lineen needs to know before he starts his new job.
Our resident rugby scholar ASBO has done alot of the leg work for us in the below list. But does anyone have anymore pearls of wisdom?

Ok so we've got Maitland, Heathcote and Swinson but looks like Mckibbin is out (although he didn't play for Australia off the bench last week so could still come back into the fold!).
I put together a list of Kiwi and Aussie players with Scottish surnames. Obviously this in no way guarantees they're qualified but does merit an investigation. Hopefully they've got at least a Scots granny.

Perhaps that should be a new qualification, if you sound Scottish you're eligible regardless of past caps.madmaccas wrote:Ok so we've got Maitland, Heathcote and Swinson but looks like Mckibbin is out (although he didn't play for Australia off the bench last week so could still come back into the fold!).

I may have missed one or two but the majority of these players haven't been capped so not really sure what you're getting at?

Scott McLeod has been playing exceptionally well for us...athletic second row...
Probably past it now for going back in to Scotland...but hes doing very well.
Him and Hogg have been very stand out. Shiels has played well..

Yeah heard a few rumblings from New Zealand that Robbie Robinson could be keen to come across and play in Europe, doesn't seem to be in the frame for the ABs despite being in great form.
He has played the majority of his rugby at 15 but does say his favourite and best position is stand off so could be good for both parties if he were to come over.

You'd have to be happy if you were able to get Robbie Robinson. Good player, just very tough to get to the front of NZ FB queue.

Re: Scottish players plying their trade outside of Scotland at the professional level
Apparently John Hardie of the Highlanders is Scottish qualified and has been approached by Sean Lineen. Not been named in the provisional AB squad so could possibly be lured away with the promise of international rugby and some of the BT Sport money. Must be Edinburgh's turn by now?

Re: Scottish players plying their trade outside of Scotland at the professional level
Higlanders openside, was reported in the press about a month or so ago. Said in the interview he was scottish qualified but didn't say he was looking for a move over at this stage! Good player, physical and good at supporting and following breaks. Would say Ross Rennie is better than him and John Barclay is probably on par with him.

I've never heard of this guy http://www.espn.co.uk/blogs/rugby/story/193329.html, but apparently he's good enough to coach the Springboks about the breakdown

Can't follow that link Nickj. Who is this guy? Scotland should frankly hire anyone who knows anything about the breakdown!

Sorry mate, not sure why that is. Try this one http://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/1796599/Scottish-coach-to-assist-Springboks
His name is Richie Gray and he's a breakdown specialist no less...
I would have said we could have done with signing him up, but on the other hand maybe we should give Matt Taylor et al a chance to show what they can do with a proper 7 fit and raring to go

Think of all those players who Matt Williams, with that "Fortress Scotland" nonsense, wouldn't have even looked at, much less picked, if he had still been running the show.
Bet you miss him!

Re: Scottish players plying their trade outside of Scotland at the professional level
"Fortress Scotland" was a bad idea in context, but the principle is no different to Gatland's previous stance with Wales, and Johnson's stance with England (not to mention that of NZ, SA and Australia). Ireland have rarely used players plying their trade abroad.
It was just a bad idea for Scotland, given that we only have two sides and such limited resources. I almost don't blame him for trying it though. The poor tactics and selections on the other hand I do blame him for!

Re: Scottish players plying their trade outside of Scotland at the professional level
Looks a really good talent. My thoughts are that we've got Weir and Russell at Glasgow but no real clear 10s at Edinburgh. Could Heathcote and West go to Edinburgh (with Tonks).
BTW, what do people think about Tonks playing centre? He's got a good kicking game and has a running game. Given we have Scott but then no real contenders (Strauss maybe), could he get game time there?

Re: Scottish players plying their trade outside of Scotland at the professional level
I think (or maybe hope) Edinburgh will stick with Leonard and Tonks at 10 for next season. Bezzie will probably stay too. I wouldn't be surprised to see Hunter and Francis move on as part of Solomon's big cull.
Tonks could be a good bet at 12, like you say he's got the right skills; but I'd be inclined to allow him to specialise at 10 before we start moving him around again.

Re: Scottish players plying their trade outside of Scotland at the professional level
Let's either keep Tonks at 15, or move him to 10. I'm sure he could do a job at 12, but with Strauss and Scott we don't really need him there.
Tonks, Bezzy and Leonard should be the options at 10. Cuthbert and Brown should handle the duties at 15. That's what I would do.
It's wing where we're short. For me Visser and Fife would be first choice, with Jones, Farndale, Hoyland and Walker covering. I suspect Walker might be done though. I'd also like Fife to play some rugby at 13 next season. I think that will ultimately be his best position.
