Mumm's the word at Exe
Confirmation of Dean Mumm joining the Chiefs: Dean Mumm Think he'll be a terrific signing for us, providing additional ballast in the boiler room. With Shorty forced to quit the game and Bentos retiring, Mumm will be compete with Tommy Hayes, James Hanks and Aly Muldowney. Rumours that Kai Horstmann might be on his way from Wuss too

Re: Mumm's the word at Exe
The Sky report says that Mumm covers the back five of the pack, I've never seen him play anywhere other than lock though so don't know if that will be the case. Horstmann to replace Baxter at the back of the Exeter scrum?
Neither of those signings are really that young (28 and 30 respectively), have Exeter got some promising forwards coming through and these guys providing an experienced stop gap for a year or two first?

Mumm has played at 6 a lot,not sure about 8, but certainly wouldn't be an openside.

We've a couple of decent young locks in Addison Locksley and Will Carrick-Smith that have represented England at age group level, and in the backrow there's Dave Ewers, Herbie Stupple and James Phillips coming thruformerly known as Sam wrote:The Sky report says that Mumm covers the back five of the pack, I've never seen him play anywhere other than lock though so don't know if that will be the case. Mumm and Whitten
Some very good recuitment going on for next year.
Well done Chiefs, I think it may be fair to say everyone's favourite second team at present.

I noticed Will Carrick-Smith when I was checking out the AP teams website at the season, his profile says he's something ridiculous like 6'10 tall! And 18 stone + Have you seen him play at all? For the 'A' team or anything?
Herbie Stupple looks like an impressive player too, I remember reading a blog about school boy rugby a couple of years ago and he was name checked as being one of the best players the interviewee had ever played with. Kept my eye open for him after that. He's listed variously as back-row and centre too, so you know he is a bit different. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mCxSLD6eDqk
Dave Ewers looks like a big abrasive unit too, been winning friends down in Cornwall I believe.

Exeter keep Mumm
One for my man Asbo:
Exeter sign Australia international forward Dean Mumm
Exeter Chiefs have signed Australian international second row Dean Mumm on a two-year-deal from Super 15 side New South Wales Waratahs.
The New-Zealand-born forward, 27, has won 33 caps for the Wallabies and will move to Sandy Park at the end of the current Super 15 season.
"He's a very good signing for us and a very good player," Chiefs boss Rob Baxter said of his new acquisition.
"He is a back five forward coming into his physical prime," he added.
"We've looked at lot at him and we believe he has got a lot of ingredients that we want him to bring to the club.
"Personally, I think it's a great credit to what the players have achieved this season - and where we are as a club right now - that a guy of that standing wants to come and play his rugby here in Exeter."
Exeter have been looking to bolster their options in the second row because Peter Short is quitting the game after failing to recover from a broken leg and Chrs Bentley is also retiring.
"There is no way you can go into either a Premiership or Heineken Cup campaign with only three frontline second rows, which is where we are at the moment," said Baxter.
"The arrival of Dean will takes us to four, but I'd say we're still a little light in terms of the back five, so we may well add another couple of people in that area."
Mumm, who captained the Australian national team in 2009, featured in Saturday's 30-21 win for the Waratahs against the Melbourne Rebels and was an ever present for his side last season.
He is the second international to join Exeter after Irish centre Ian Whitten committed to moving to Sandy Park from Ulster last month.
The club have also signed front-row duo Alex Brown and Jack Yeandle from Championship side Doncaster.

Blimey, what have they been feeding him! Me thinks the morning wheatabix probably don't cut it at his house.
There's the A League play off tonight with Exeter vs Tigers, will these be the lads on show there? (sadly I won't be in attendance).

Re: Mumm's the word at Exe
Carrick-Smith is huge, I played with him at U13 level and he was pushing 6 foot then but was a bit lanky and relatively easy to take down if you tackled low enough and didn't get intimidated by his size. By the time I played against him at U18 level two or so years ago he'd filled out a bit, although I doubt he was 18 stone then, he was good but didn't dominate the game. Not seen him play since he's been with Exe but I suspect they've improved him dramatically.

Thanks for the story, it's good to know players have backgrounds and weren't developed in huge vats of edible meat jelly and born with boots on.

Re: Mumm's the word at Exe
Dave Ewers started for Pirates on Saturday, and will also be starting for Braves tonight. Similarly, Stupple started for Albion and is benched tonight.
Addison Lockley was injured playing for Albion a week ago, but came off the bench on Saturday.
Carrick-Smith was in hospital with a poorly foot not so long ago - not sure if he's fit yet, but he played in a few A games earlier in the season..
There's also Charlie Walker-Blair in the back row, converted from wing (12 tries in 8 games for Taunton last season) who's been fairly regular in the Braves, but I think he may have a long term injury.
Tonight's back 5 are Chris Bentley (coming back from injury and retiring from playing at the end of the season) Chad Slade (lock converted from back row) Ewers, White (played 20 minuted yesterday) and James Phillips. Bench is Muldowney (played 20 minutes yesterday) and Stupple. I think that shows that more depth is required.
The word on the Albion forum is that Stupple is being released by Exeter and he's being signed on a permanent, despite competition from Jersey. He also won their Most Promising Player award.

There was a second row in the Tigers academy the other year who had the name Rob Conquest. Shame his ability didn't match his name.

I remember him playing 4 & 6 for Australia but agree there is no chance of him being a 7.Bathite wrote:Mumm has played at 6 a lot,not sure about 8, but certainly wouldn't be an openside.

"Plymouth Raiders lose another nailbiter 157-3"
Apparently Chiefs don't actually exist according to them.
