Re: Weather
Snow in the forecast, but course opened early, unusually dry initially but 2+ inches of rain this past week has freshened everything up nicely.
Gales and snow squalls tomorrow then a welcome warm up!

Re: Weather
Must admit that we are having a quiet wee laugh up our sleeves at all the rain the South of England has had since the drought order came in.
We have had a fabulous early Spring in South Ayrshire, all the crops/plants are well on and the golf courses are looking fresh.

Re: Weather
We've had a ridiculously mild winter -- I bought a new pair of winter boots to see me through the expected ice/snow/slush and haven't worn them once. We had snow just one day (when I happened to be in Bermuda on a biz trip), but it soon melted. So we played way more golf than usual through the winter. Not sure what what implies about the summer though!

It's been quite a turnaround, a month ago it was almost getting to hitting linksy bump and runs. Tuesday just gone, at our weekly 13 hole comp I had a couple of 25-30 foot spin backs, the greens are like rice pudding!!

Re: Weather
Cold and wet every day since a little hot spell at the end of march. I have had about 5 rounds in April and all of them have been freezing cold and during one I got caught in a snow/hail shower.
Getting pretty sick of it.

Wet but it was so dry last year, most places need it this time of year. Rather have it wet now and the course in good nick for the rest of the year.

Hope you manage to keep things set fair for me Doon - I'll be up your way on the 17th May and very much looking forward to it as well. I don't want to travel too heavy, so if you could sort me out light breezes, some sun but not too much and keep the rain after 9pm please!

Haven't been out on a real course for ages. Fortunately though, I have a nearby indoor golf simulator facility available as a reasonable proxy.

Haven't played a full round since the April monthly medal (7th April). Manged to fit a few range/short game/9 holes in between showers though. Been a shocking month for golf all in all.

Re: Weather
It is those kind of headlines that really gets my goat.
Northern Ireland and most of Scotland have had some wonderful weather this month.
Last time I looked both areas were in the UK.
The BBC is so wrapped up in SE England, where it's main audience is, it just makes these announcments willy nilly.
Anyone noticed the changes in the guests appearing on the morning news programme now that they have moved to the Midlands of ENGLAND. Strangley now many speak with a black country accent. ('')

Re: Weather
I'm playing in an open day at Heythrop Park in a few weeks off the very back (black) tees. It measures over 7,000 yards from them and if this rain keeps up I reckon it will be playing more like 7,500+.
SSS is 74 (par 72) but there's every chance that CSS could be a nailed on 77 on the day so off my 11, with the buffer zone I could shoot a 90 and not go up. Happy Days!

I assure you in Edinburgh it has been the wettest coldest April I can remember. When I saw that bbc headline I assumed they had measured it in Edinburgh.

Yes Mac I know the East coast was wet but over here in the West it has been pretty good.
Usually the other way around, mind you we don't get that cutting east wind.

Re: Weather
Somewhat hectic b_b:
Wednesday 16th - Slaley Hall
Thursday - Turnberry Kintyre
Friday - Stan Drews Dukes
Saturday - The Glen
Sunday - Gullane 2
There was talk of staying an extra day at Stan Drews to have a round with S_R, also I considered roping you in at Duddingston as well as Doc on the way up. But just not enough time.
Monday, collapse in a wet and muddy heap, a gibbering wreck with a trace of dribble down my chin.
Oh and don't forget the drinking - there may well be just a little of that as well.

What is the full story with the clubhouse?
The design was always going to cause problems even when I was there.
You should have see the movement of the building during the hurricane, very sacrey.

Wednesday medal this afternoon. Forecast is set to be fair... Sun Sun Sun!! (better dig out the shorts )
Last season was pretty messy for us in terms of heavy rainfall. I drove over 500 miles for opens which were cancelled after overnight rain, and 3 club comps were cancelled over the season too - not to mention the number of additional weekend games missed.

Misti.......check the weather pages.
It was 19 degrees in my garden a couple of days ago.
There is a bit of a breeze about to make it bearable here.
Just been out with the beast to the top of our local hill where I can see Carsphairn, Ailsa Craig, Ben Lomond and Goat Fell on Arran.

We had a lab for many years and you could throw a stone into a pond- he would be in under the water for longer than you thought possible and always came up with the stone. No idea how.Like yours ate everything except tomato.

Re: Weather
Our course has been closed since Sunday, should probably have been closed Saturday but thet wanted to squeeze in the club championship 1st qualifier.
If the weather holds will likely be open by Firday morning though I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing as I am meant to play 1st round of clubs 4bbb knockout saturday, problem with that is my partner decided to go on a last minute jolly abroad with some lass he met! Meaning I have to play the other pai on my own!
So hoping the wather does me a favour and closes course so we can get an extension as Sunday is last date for 1st round matches!

I read somewhere that Labs were used to retrieve fishing nets in Nova Scotia, I have one too. Awesome swimmer, very similar in the face to a seal! She ate everything as a pup, even a cooked onion on one occasion.

Never heard of a dog called a Nova Scotia. What staggered me was the length of time he would spend under water and always come up with the same stone. Not sure the water did him good eventually very bad arthiritis.

Apparently Labradors use a technique called "lung packing", which involves swallowing air after the lungs have been filled to capacity. This allows them to stay under water for prodigious lengths of time.

Bizarre that I recently learned what that phrase meant, in a (sort-of) golf context! [extract from a certain book which happened to mention Navy SEAL training...]

Re: Weather
My daughter had a labrador pup who was used to running in the sea near Port Logan.
They used the small pier for filming '1000 acres of Skye' and dredged out the harbour.
Nobody told the Lab and he was running along happily in the sea when he suddenly went 'bloop'. We were on the shore laughing our socks off but he did not surface.
I was getting ready to jump in when he finally came up.
Too hot for golf up here today.

So the weather has closed my course for the 6th straight day the upside being it means I don't have to play my 4bbb 1st round on my own.

Yep played today...first day open for a few days, fairways ok but off-piste is a quagmire. I thought they would have opened yesterday but they were clearly protecting it for the big comp today.
There was a breeze blowing but not normally the strength that would bump up the CSS....However the CSS looks like being 74 (SSS 71). Suggesting that the conditions are more problematic and have caught people unawares.
