Greatest exponent of the left hook? Empty Greatest exponent of the left hook?

Post by ONETWOFOREVER Fri May 11, 2012 12:13 am

1 of the most famous weapons in boxing. If delivered correctly, it could close the show but who in boxing's long history threw it the best?
My top 5 would be, in descending order.....

5) Bob Foster
4) Tommy Morrison
3) Floyd Paterson
2) Joe Frazier
1) Jersy Joe Walcott.

Bob Foster - kOed Tigar Flowers for the light heavy
Tommy Morrison - Koed Micheal Bent
Floyd Paterson - koed Ingamar Johanson for the heavyweight title
Joe Frazier - Koed Ellis for the heavyweight title
Joe Walcott - Koed Ezzard Charles for the heavyweight title

All with the left hook. These are the top 5. Galento, Tua, Lacy had their chance and did jack.

So are you saying that you're only a great exponent of the left hook if you used it to finish a title fight?

Yep, SRR is a great shout. Didn't stick out to me so much when I was thinking, maybe it's cause he did everything so bloody well!

Many of the obvious names have been mentioned, of course, so I'd offer up the two outstanding Mexican Welterweights of the seventies; Carlos Palomino and Pipino Cuevas.

Both great left hookers. Unless my memory is playing tricks on me, I seem to remember Palomino taking all of the wind out of Dave 'Boy' Green's sails with a textbook left hook after struggling for much of the fight beforehand, and he inflicted a hell of a lot of punishment on Armando Muniz (two excellent fights, by the way) with that same punch when they met.

Cuevas was an absolute animal with that left. Only the teak-tough Randy Shields managed to last the full course with him during his eleven successful defences of the WBA Welterweight crown and his left hook was particularly nasty and unforgiving. Sadly for Cuevas, he and his left hand ended up running in to something even more deadly - Tommy and his right!

I always say it, but the left hook that Don Curry dropped Milton McCrory with was one of the best (if not the best) I've ever seen.

At the risk of getting Truss over-excited, I'd have to whole-heartedly agree. Second only to Robinson's left hook against Fulmer in my book.

Have to agree gents. Also there should be a set criteria - For example both morrison and tua exceeded Tysons in terms of brute force but Tyson used and delivered it better than either of them.

Was thinking about that one, wasn't Floyds a check left hook on Hatton that sent him in to the ring post?
