Lefty's 209 yard 8-iron on the 18th yesterday
He surely massively de-lofts his irons to hit it that far.
Please tell me 'Yes'!

Combination of strong lofts, longer shafts, high heat and low humidity probably. Coupled with being a bit above sea level. All of that will contribute to a longer flight through the air.
That said these guys can get it out there.

It's perhaps not as unusual as you might think. In a comp on Saturday I hit a 9-iron 160 yds through the back of a green (normal 9-iron is 130-135yds for me). It was down wind & I was sure I couldn't go through the back of it, so I welted it.... gobsmacked when it went through the back.

Just because his club has an 8 on the bottom does not mean it is an 8 iron as we know it.

Is that a golfing term??
Seriously though, I did see Phil's shot and clearly heard him say to his caddy that he couldn't have hit a 9 from there

OK, that's fair enough but I think we need a bit more info.
Is a 'welt' similar to a high draw, a power fade, a low runner, a punch shot?
Come on, we need to know!

It means hit very hard.
But obviously it was with control - after all one cannot hit a golf ball without control

That's no way to talk about Scottish cuisine

My apologies. Just come back from my first visit to Scotland and absolutely loved it apart from the food. Thought it was about the worst I've ever experienced but will certainly not stop me visiting again!

Then you were definitely eating in the wrong places. I guess Macdonalds is the same the world over
If you really want to push the boat out and have the budget....and you like first class food and ambiance - go to Kitchins restaurant in Leith (Edinburgh) it's a Michelin star'd restaurant - the food is to die for

It's a common fallacy that fast food is the same the world over.
For example ever since I came back from Germany I've never seen Sauerkraut on a KFC menu.

Re: Lefty's 209 yard 8-iron on the 18th yesterday
I did go there and agree that it was really really good. However, I just found that the average bistro/pub/hotel/golf club meal was quite poor and maybe a bit old fashioned. More so on the West coast than the East coast.
London was the same a few years ago and I suspect that other parts of the UK are still like this as us Brits have historically not been that highly regarded in the culinary world...
Oh, and I don't eat fast food. It's a disgrace that it is not targeted like bankers' bonuses as it will cost us more in the long run...

I'm thinking of pretending to be a protester this evening to see if I can't get them to turn on me. Peaceful protest my maiden backside.
Incidentally. Everywhere has it's dodgy places to eat. But also a high proportion of very good places. Problem is usually finding them... or even getting in.

"From there" being the 190 yards he was from the pin.
