Too right Gunner. He's got roots in Port Chalmers. The Lady Thorn Rhododendron gardens were set up for Sir John Thorn and his wife as a tribute to my great Uncle Jack (same Sir John) and her for civil service I vaguely remember. Useless bit of info for you anyway haha.

Thorn is an Outram boy Disney.
About 20km from Dunedin.
Consumate professional.
Hard man.
Top bloke.
His former league team-mates have nothin but praise for da man.
Personally disappointed he never came back to Otago....
But man TOTAL LEGEND!
Just ask Leinster fans if they respect da man?
LEGEND!

Re: Brad Thorn
Gunner mate I said he's got roots there. Like I have and I'm from the Hutt. You'd know better than I in that case.
Mintie nah I haven't-he's only my third cousin or so so don't really know him. Though I'd say hi to him in the street of course.
Did Brad win a World Cup with Aussie? I'm not sure. Hoping he gets the Pro12 as well. Did his Japanese team win? What else does he need now, the Currie Cup, the Premiership and the Top 14? He's still got time
My favourite AB is Carter and I'm so gutted that injury has taken him out of the last two cups. Not to mention that absence greatly affected our performance. But the commentators said it right. Brad was the heart of the ABs and you could tell how much the other ABs, and now the Leinster guys, respect him. BOD and him looked pretty chummy at the end good to see.

He wasn't picked in the 2000 Kangaroo squad for the World Cup so no RL World Cup to add to his CV...to think they took Darren Britt over him!

Geez Mintie I apologise,I looked it up your right,
When I think back on it Darren Britt was just another front rower going around at that time.

If he wants an Aviva Premiership winners medal, I'm sure we'd be happy to take him on board. We are in the final this year so he'd have a decent chance of winning too

I think now he's concentrating on a World Series of Poker bracelet. He's pretty much done everything else in the rugby codes. What a legend!

If anyone should write a book its Thorn, especially giving an insight of coaches from the likes of Bennett and Henry to Deans, blackadder,Hansen and Schmidt and their build ups to the real big games.

I strongly feel that he needs to be put into a coaching/mentoring role within the NZRFU
He's got mana and experience in bucketloads

That would be a very good read Laurie.
How long is his stint in Japan for mintie? I like the idea of Thorn as a coach of some capacity like defence coach.

Re: Brad Thorn
Not so interested about the first half of this but Justin Marshall goes one about Thorn's contribution to leinster since he's been there....
http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/opinion/6955685/All-Blacks-will-crush-misplaced-Irish-confidence
So...is that about Heaslip or O'Brien?
"Then there's Brad Thorn's achievement in adding a European Cup to his legacy as a World Cup winner, Australian league rep, State of Origin winner, NRL premiership victor and Super Rugby title winner.
That he could step straight out of Japanese rugby and play at the highest level in Europe is a reflection on Thorn's professionalism and preparation.
I've talked to people close to the club who say his contribution has been immense.
Leinster has an Irish test loosie with a reputation among his team-mates for being way too opinionated, especially during training.
The story goes that Brad Thorn had been there for only two weeks when at training one night the loosie started having too much to say again.
Thorn apparently withdrew that gnarled head of his from out of a scrum and in that gravelly voice nobody can imitate: "Save the energy for the scrum mate. I can't even feel any weight from you. Less talk, more pushing mate!"
I also can't help but think of the Blues when I tell that story. They don't necessarily need Thorn next year (although they could do worse in the market), but they certainly need some Brad Thorn attitude and his type of player."

Re: Brad Thorn
I'd say Heaslip. He's always seemed to be a bit of a gobshoite to me.
And by the way why is the title "All-Blacks-will-crush-misplaced-Irish-confidence"
Has anyone heard any Irish confidence about beating the All Blacks? We all think we're going to be hammered!

Re: Brad Thorn
Just a bit of sensationalism I think feckless.....
However, why shouldn't the Irish be confident? Two finalists in the H Cup and playing a NZ team under a new coach with key players missing (ie Thorn). Should be a cracker first test, though ireland won't have any hope in the 2nd or 3rd I feel

Re: Brad Thorn
I actually think you can catch us cold. Add that to Jane getting injured and I can see Kearney having a field day. Savea should be on one wing but he's a debutant and Guildford's not as good in the air as the others. Having said that Ireland's kicking game will need to be spot on as if those kicks go too far their defence will get obliterated.
I reckon it'd be Heaslip too-think SOB is a bit quiet (could be mistaken who knows). If it was Heaslip I'd be surprised if he didn't get a gibe about getting sent off against the ABs.

Re: Brad Thorn
My mind is in two places.
First, the Ireland teams have been strong in the HC for a quite while but not translating to on the international field at all. A lot of foreign players in the key roles in those clubs so maybe making a difference.
Second, all blacks might be in some translating place after world cup and first few tests always not so good for all blacks.
Ireland tend not travel too well also.

If we didn't have Kidney I would think it would be our best chance ever at sneaking a win. With Kidney it's not impossible but it probably won't happen. I don't know if I want it too. A win would probably get him another year or two or six months minimum.
