surrey vs warwickshire match thread
Team Director Chris Adams has named an unchanged thirteen man squad for the LV=County Championship match against Warwickshire at the Kia Oval on Wednesday.
The Surrey squad for the LV=County Championship match against Warwickshire at the Kia Oval on Wednesday 23rd May, Thursday 24th May, Friday 25th May and Saturday 26th May:
Rory Hamilton-Brown (capt)
Steven Davies
Jacques Rudolph
Jason Roy
Zander de Bruyn
Tom Maynard
Chris Jordan
Gareth Batty
Jon Lewis
Stuart Meaker
Jade Dernbach
Tim Linley
George Edwards
i have to say i'm very surprised that jordan & edwards are included as neither done enough in the last game.
if dernbach and the viscount replace them it would leave the tail very long so maybe dernbach for edwards will be the only change.

For me, Spriegel (or Burns, or Lancefield, or Wilson) really needs to come in at 7 instead of Jordan to shore up the batting.

they are top of the table and in good form, they have some good momentum.

And Chris Woakes is back Never looked like he had been away. Adds excellent balance to the side, as well as being a ruddy good bowler.
Re: surrey vs warwickshire match thread
Warwickshire have an extremely strong team, very good all round cricketers. However Surrey on their day will cause problems. Dernback, Meaker are top bowlers and Maynard is in top form. Will be an intriguing game

Like you, I'm pretty sure Dernbach will replace Edwards. Thinking it over, it's probably quite good management from Adams to at least name Edwards in the squad and keep him (partially) involved rather than just throw him aside and forget him (as seemed to happen with Matt Dunn).
Again like you, I suspect Jordan may edge Linley out. I agree that playing Linley would give us a very long tail. The trouble is that Jordan - who is meant to give us balance just like Woakes and, I would also suggest, Clarke do for Warks - is not contributing runs or wickets. Linley is generally reliable and always hard working with the ball even though he's no batsman. Rather a decentish bowler or batsman than an allrounder who is not firing on either level.
CF and Fists - before you completely write off Surrey and celebrate a Warks' victory, I would flag that we've played very well at times in our last two matches. The problem for us is that we've also played dreadfully at times in those matches. If we can get through this match without a dreadful session, we just could give Warks a game ....
I'm in London on Friday for a couple of meetings. If the second one finishes on time, I should catch the final session at the Oval.

Re: surrey vs warwickshire match thread
I would play Spriegel for Jordan to shore up the batting and provide a second spinner (if Ansari was available I'd play him). Jordan has been pretty awful so far so I see no reason to persist.
Dernbach for Edwards is obvious, this will be a very tough test. Warwickshire rack up the runs and have a very good bowling attack too, it would be very typical of Clarke to put in a motm performance against us but I hope not!

Guildford, where are your loyalties, man?
You are Warks through and through, and we all know it
Could be a tight game if the Surrey bowlers fire, but Warks do bat long. Warks favourites, but it is by no means a given.

Warwickshire unchanged.
A great toss for Surrey to win, should be a top day for batting.

Re: surrey vs warwickshire match thread
Quick sneaky look in.
Great toss to win as Fists says.
Roy opening with Davies. Reindeer playing but probably batting at number 4.
Currently 32 - 0 off 5. 'Ronnie' Barker already proving expensive. Will it be 'goodnight from him'?
Fists - with regard to my loyalties and being Warks born, please remember that Ashley Giles is from Surrey and learnt his cricket at Guildford CC!

Ah good, Roy gone lbw to Barker after a flying Surrey start. 41/1.
Re: surrey vs warwickshire match thread
Good lad Rikki Clarke, Davies out, caught Porterfield, for 32.
Surrey 79-2, and Woakes is yet to bowl.

The rest of the league is praying for a crushing Surrey win! Or at least denying Warwickshire a win. They are beginning to run away with it a bit!

Even though Surrey have put some runs on the board, the first hour goes to Warks with two wickets. We can't afford to lose another before lunch ....

Well what an interesting first session.
Surrey rattling along at a fine rate, but that is countered somewhat by being 3 wickets down.

Warks take the first point and the first session as Surrey go into lunch on 134 - 3 off 29. I would far prefer 80 - 0 but Surrey just don't do that!

Excellent. Wright removes Rudolph first over after lunch and then Rory HB gets run out. 141/5 and Warks in control.

Re: surrey vs warwickshire match thread
Another poor batting display from Surrey, no wonder we have so few batting points this season. There are far too many in our top six who go out there and have a dash rather than build an innings. RHB is starting to be more considered, but others such as Roy have no patience whatsoever. Not to mention the selection of Jordan, he shouldn't be anywhere near the first eleven the way he has played this season.
Another game where the win will be ruled out on day one.

Wright gets rid of the stubborn Lewis, and with the bunny Dernbach last man in the end is nigh for this Surrey innings. 221/9.

Re: surrey vs warwickshire match thread
Well, your boys are going to need to put up a very good display with the ball here. Warks bat long and bat deep, if the likes of Chopra or Clarke get set then they could be facing a substantial second innings deficit.
Here's hoping so! C'mon you Bears.

Re: surrey vs warwickshire match thread
Two sessions are now completed. The first for Surrey was a bit iffy and the second utterly dreadful. We can't afford to do that against opponents as good as Warks. Barring an incredible turnaround, the game is now gone.guildfordbat wrote:

I would have played Burns at 7 instead of Jordan, we have five bowlers already in the eleven. He has played some useful innings in the seconds so far and got a good hundred in the Uni match at the start of the season.

Re: surrey vs warwickshire match thread
7 players out for between 16 and 39? Either:
1/ it's a game pitch on which you're never quite in; or
2/ C Adams needs to borrow Sir A Ferguson's hairdryer.
For once, Jordan was blameless. He may have made a big fat 0 but others badly underachieved and disappointed.

Westwood is out to Dernbach, Warks 17/1.
Westwood is quite a poor batsman - certainly the weak link in the Warks line-up, so it comes as no great surprise.

Re: surrey vs warwickshire match thread
Why do all our batsmen play like it's a one-day match? Have the abundance of one-day matches caused this? Why are Jordan and Batty playing? Why doesn't Linley play when he was our top bowler last year? Why have we no all-rounders? (I realise some of these answer some of the others, but considering how much we pay for players we should be better than this).

Barker and Wright did such a good job when Woakes were injured that I suppose it was difficult to take the new ball out of their hands...

Re: surrey vs warwickshire match thread
A very poor day for Surrey.
As Simon says, most of the batsmen made a start and reached double figures but all got out before reaching 40. Very disappointing that no one at all could crack on to make a heavy score. Two of the top five being run out seems totally unnecessary. In Championship cricket run rates are not as valuable as wickets in hand.
To some extent, the loss of quick wickets through adventurous play is a risk we take with a fairly young and attack minded side. However, this is when we should be looking to the experience of Rudolph and de Bruyn to dig us out of a hole. Probably most disappointing of all is that, like today, they've too often contributed to the mess rather than remedying it.
I don't know enough of today's play to be critical of our bowlers. The figures seem tidy enough. A shame there was only one wicket taken but we probably couldn't have expected more against a strong batting side in good batting conditions.
I fear that Warks could well get a 200 plus lead tomorrow. They might even then be tempted to stick us in for 30 minutes before close.
Just like last time out, we have already lost the right to win this game. Unlike then, I can't see us getting out of this one with even a draw.

I wouldn't worry about having to face the last half hour tomorrow, Guildford. If Warks are not out by then they'll bat on and on. It has been one criticism of the side this year, in that they are too conservative in their declarations. Still, there could be worse criticisms, I guess.
All in all a perfect day for the Bears after being asked to bowl on a good track in good batting conditions.
Re: surrey vs warwickshire match thread
I can't really add anything that hasn't been said, pretty pathetic effort from our batsmen again in the first innings. 2 run outs is unforgiveable and if Ramps has been dropped surely De Bruyn, Rudolph and Jordan in particular need to be looking over their shoulders? I'd get Burns in somewhere and Ansari as soon as he's available to be our allrounder at 7. Hoping for another comeback in the second innings to salvage a draw.

Re: surrey vs warwickshire match thread
Although Warwickshire are well ahead in the game, they still have to be careful and not too far ahead of themselves. I would expect nothing less from this side as they seem to have good cricketing brains on the most part. But Surrey are a very dynamic side, and if Meaker or Dernbach get into a groove they could easily pick up 4 or 5 wickets very quickly and swing the balance back the other way. Likewise with their batting, Surrey can score runs very quickly. That can be a curse as today has proved, but it can also be an advantage as they can turn the game in their favour quickly in another discipline as well. It's a big ask for Surrey to get out of the first day hole they have dug themselves for the third game running, especially against a side playing as well as Warwickshire are, but if any team can recover this position in a short time it is Surrey.

Fists - I was just thinking that after Lancs escaped with a draw in your last match, you would want to make sure we don't have enough time to get off the hook. Also, our opening batsmen won't fancy 30 minutes at the crease late tomorrow if they've spent the previous 6 hours fielding in scorching heat.Fists of Fury wrote:

I agree it was 'a perfect day for the Bears'. I'm conscious I haven't given them enough credit in my posts above which concentrate on Surrey's shortcomings. Anyway, genuinely well done! I'll leave our roving reporter Shelsey to provide the balanced view.
