surrey vs warwickshire match thread
First topic message reminder :
Team Director Chris Adams has named an unchanged thirteen man squad for the LV=County Championship match against Warwickshire at the Kia Oval on Wednesday.
The Surrey squad for the LV=County Championship match against Warwickshire at the Kia Oval on Wednesday 23rd May, Thursday 24th May, Friday 25th May and Saturday 26th May:
Rory Hamilton-Brown (capt)
Steven Davies
Jacques Rudolph
Jason Roy
Zander de Bruyn
Tom Maynard
Chris Jordan
Gareth Batty
Jon Lewis
Stuart Meaker
Jade Dernbach
Tim Linley
George Edwards
i have to say i'm very surprised that jordan & edwards are included as neither done enough in the last game.
if dernbach and the viscount replace them it would leave the tail very long so maybe dernbach for edwards will be the only change.

Re: surrey vs warwickshire match thread
That is a possibility, Guildford. Tomorrow will certainly shape the course of this game one way or another, anyway. Looking forward to it. Can Surrey show the same kind of fight that Lancs did at Edgbaston last week?
Re: surrey vs warwickshire match thread
Porterfield out to Batty this morning, but Chopra marches on. 136/2.
Re: surrey vs warwickshire match thread
Surrey having a good morning. 144/4 with Chopra the latest man out, also to Batty.
In the balance a littl more now, though Warks bat deep.

190/5, Maddy lbw to Meaker.
Yep, Clarke is in supreme form, so every chance jimbo! Here's hoping!

Hamilton Brown has removed Ambrose, how embarrassing!
207/6, Woakes the new man in.

Clarke lbw to Batty, and Warks have done a Surrey - made a royal hash of a promising start!!
207/7 and game very much even stevens again now.

Re: surrey vs warwickshire match thread
Barker comes and goes, 213/8. Batty taking wickets...is that not one of the signs of the apocalypse?
Re: surrey vs warwickshire match thread
and Patel follows for a golden duck, Batty again! Caught and bowled.
Oh dear Warks, you have messed this up in style. Likely first innings lead for Surrey.
Guildford, such pessimism as well

Re: surrey vs warwickshire match thread
Only 24 runs lead for Warks.
All out for 247, 6 wickets for Nora.
Don't know whether to say good bowling or poor batting. As usual, probably a bit of both.

Yeah most likely, Tibor.
Surrey's 2nd innings holds the key to this match now, then.

Re: surrey vs warwickshire match thread
Awesome start for surrey, 75/1 from 13, Roy is blazing it to all parts!

what was that about batty davekingdaveeagle wrote:Why do all our batsmen play like it's a one-day match? Have the abundance of one-day matches caused this? Why are Jordan and Batty playing? Why doesn't Linley play when he was our top bowler last year? Why have we no all-rounders? (I realise some of these answer some of the others, but considering how much we pay for players we should be better than this).

Hell's teeth!
What is going on? What's happened? Who is going to explain this to the Corporal when ge gets back from extended patrol and demands a detailed report?
Worth adding that Surrey certainly aren't home and dry but we're in a great position considering I thought we were sunk last night!

Re: surrey vs warwickshire match thread
Just when Warwickshire's much vaunted batting line-up required a big score, they were skittled by Gareth Batty. As I said above, I expect imminent apocalypse.

I just wish they would up the run rate a bit.... yawn

Incredibly sad, Guildford, he was a lovely man, and immensely knowledgeable to boot.

Re: surrey vs warwickshire match thread
If you had offered me this time last night a day 2 end of play scenario of Surrey 120 ahead with 6 2nd innings wickets in hand... Cor, who'd-a thunk it? Realistically, the odds must still favour Warwicks but Surrey's odds must be a lot shorter than they were 24 hours ago
PS: call me paranoid, but it's yet another anti-Surrey flavoured report on the BBC website tonight. Ho hum.

Simon - spot on!
Pleased for Batty and hs sixfer. I've been very critical of him in the past but have come to respect his fighting and supportive qualities. Good to see him take centre stage for once.
Good as well to have Roy making a decent score. Lets hope Rudolph can follow suit in his Surrey swansong. A lot would seem to be resting on his partnership with Maynard in the morning ....

Re: surrey vs warwickshire match thread
Agree guildford, the result basically rests on how many these two can put on. I think we need a minimum of 250 lead and even then it might not be enough but with Meaker, Dernbach and Batty with his confidence high it could be another tight finish.
Incidentally Spriegel took 7-for in the seconds game today!

Re: surrey vs warwickshire match thread
We could afford to play Spriegel at 6, to give a batting order of Roy, Davies, De Bruyn, Hyphen, Maynard and Spriegel, with a seam attack of JD, Lewis, Meaker/Linley and de Bruyn, backed up by tweaking from Batty (and a bit from Spriegel and Hyphen) should be good enough to keep us in D1, surely this season's primary objective.

Re: surrey vs warwickshire match thread
It could go either way, if Warks are chasing under 200 it should be easy for them but if we can get it to 250 it gets interesting. I could see this being another tight finish.

In such a tight low scoring game will Surrey's generous gift of a 12th man to the opposition, ie Extras, prove decisive?

Re: surrey vs warwickshire match thread
Surprised there aren't more comments today so far, the game looks finely poised. Batty holds the key here as the wicket seems to be spinning. Shows that we can compete with everyone in the division.

3 down now, Batty working his magic with the newish ball!
They have obviously played well this season, but Warwickshire's batting line up isn't really anything to be scared of. None of the players who have batted so far have a career average over 35.

Utter dross from Warwickshire. Really annoying, getting out to distinctly average bowling. Garbage.

I would disagree if it was Dernbach or Meaker doing all of the damage, but Batty is another story! The wicket must be turning square. Having said that, all four of our bowlers so far have played for England at some point.

Re: surrey vs warwickshire match thread
Batty was whom I was referring to! Nightmare that he is cleaning us up!
Yeah granted they've played for England, but it is poor to let Batty run through you! Agreed, must be turning square, then stopping and turning back the other way, for Batty to be doing this sort of damage.

Re: surrey vs warwickshire match thread
Made it to the Oval today about 20 minutes before tea. Rather feel I jinxed it!
Warks were 50 odd - 4 when I arrived and in real trouble. Batty was bowling well with confidence from the Pavilion End and he continued to do so unchanged until stumps. The main problem was that we largely lacked penetration from the other end.
Jordan was as disappointing as we have come to expect. He only bowled 3 overs and the last of those was particularly dreadful. Not only did he get carted but he managed to bowl two no balls (thus gifting Warks 4 runs without needing to do anything) as well. Especially annoying in the context of a low run chase. That one over cost 15 runs (I've since checked). It changed the mood of the supporters watching and almost certainly gave greater confidence to the solid Porterfield and more adventurous Ambrose.
Of the other bowlers, Lewis was tidy but never troubled the batsmen. Dernbach was similar without being so tidy. Meaker was certainly the best of the pacemen and had Clarke hopping on one occasion with a yorker on his toes.
Hamilton-Brown turned his arm and seemed unlucky not to get a wicket. Ambrose missed the ball playing forward and Davies had the bails off in an instant. Besides Ambrose, the only person anywhere near the crease who didn't join in the celebrations was Umpire Millns who turned down the oh-so confident appeal. The score was 100 -4 then. If that appeal had been upheld, we would have half of the ten wickets needed whilst Warks were less than half way to their target. It'll be interesting to see if Surrey tv captured the incident (although I doubt their film will focus on the line marking). Anyway, I thought Hamilton-Brown could have bowled a bit more although he obviously felt differently.
There was some confusion at the end as to whether the extra half hour was going to be claimed by Warks. Not too surprisingly, it wasn't - Ambrose and Clarke (who started off getting down the track at every opportunity) had gone into their shells in the closing overs and seemed happy to wait another morning for victory. There was certainly no way we were going to take the five remaining wickets tonight. I very much doubt that we'll be able to tomorrow but at least that's another day. I'll leave any further inquest until then.

Re: surrey vs warwickshire match thread
Whilst a defeat for Surrey looked pretty inevitable at the end of play yesterday, it was nonetheless disappointing that a match which had been so full of twists and turns went entirely according to Warks' script this morning.
Not impressed by Lewis opening and even less so by him bowling the second ball of the day down the leg side to concede 4 leg byes. That didn't cost us the game but it set the tone for the thirty odd minutes of play.
Churchy confirmed that this was Rudolph's last game for Surrey. He's been a huge diappointment so will only be missed in the dressing room (that was for you, Corporal ). Burns, Harinath and Wilson were all in the runs this week for the seconds and will be vying for his place assuming Ramps continues to sit things out.
Must now be a big question mark over Jordan's continuing place in the side. De Bruyn also needs to considerably up his game.

Yet another defeat snatched from the jaws of victory - how many times have Surrey done that in recent years? Only positive was the surprise form of Batty - 10 in a game must almost equal the total he's ever taken for Surrey before this game!
