You must come to see the Sharks play at home if you love women.

My mrs would leave me. She likes her rugby but that schedule leaves no "fun" time

Re: Why you must come live in SA if you love rugby.
One dedicated rugby channel 24/7. 5 sky sport channels including espn that take in live rugby, league and replays. Maori channel are showing the jwcup live also. Prime also do the main sxv and tests replays for non sky sport folk.
You can get most big matches on a number of web links so its all there really. Pity i dont watch a lot of football or american sport. But the id never leave the chair!

In fairness, there's no Super rugby on and it's the NH off season. Though it'd be nice if they could send a camera or 2 to more of the schools/club matches - I thought St Kentigern was a cricket school mostly (a few years back when Mark Richardson and Adam Parore were opening the batting for NZ someone pointed out they'd batted at 8 and 9 for the St Kentigern 1st XI)

Don't you get angry that you can't watch the SA games in S15 or when you are touring. Didn't know it is that bad, or I knew - just didn't really think about it from your perspective. On many Saturdays I wake up, watch rugby and the go to sleep. All around a braai of course, and I do get enough time for a quick shower, but then I miss Naas' comments.

I'm actually in the UK , and generally the Crusaders' home games are evening ones, so not too bad. The Friday night ones are tough, as they're on during my commute to work. And there's always the record button.
When I was still living in Christchurch a trip to the local pub for a cooked breakfast watching a replay of SA vs NZ used to be a highlight - as long as you remembered not to turn on the TV/radio/computer before leaving the house.

Biltong - serious question.
We will have one week in Sath Efrika next year. What should we see and where should we go?

Its no wonder the ave. boere is as tall as he is wide.... with the vast amount of sport on supersport we're creating a generation of coach potatoes/net bloggers!

Cape Town is worth a visit...otherwise KZN is a good bet, we've got game reserves, mountains, beaches (with warm water) cities, country-side...in fact we've got pretty much everything (not that I'm biased at all)

Would personally rent a car & spend the week driving slowly around the north, central & start of the southern parts of the Kruger NP.

True regarding wildlife but the northern parts are pretty beautiful scenery & birdlife-wise in the summer. And there is still wildlife to be seen.

I would say the best thing to do is to skip the transvaal and their national parks.... overrated hobby farms
Cape Town has it all really, bar the safari... loads of people spend thousands of GBP/EUR/USD going up north for this only but their are better alternatives IMO.
PE has some great game reserves... you have everything there... bar Malaria. You can drive between Cape Town and PE which are both very safe, (the garden route) is probably in the top5 best vacation hotspots in the world.. below Blackpool obviously
Before I moved here I did about 5 holidays before I exhausted Cape Town itself... and with all this nature, sun and great lifestyle what do we do... we watch super sport thats what we do!!!!

All jokes aside, rugby would be the cherry on the cake living in SA. I have visited 5 times (twice on business) and love the place. I have never had a bad experience and met plenty of warm and friendly South Africans eager to show me a wonderful country.
By the way, I have a cousin born and living in SA. We may be of the same stock, but he wears a medium and here in Wales he would be an extra, extra large !

Re: Why you must come live in SA if you love rugby.
My brother and wife moved to SA, he had a house built, within two weeks it was broken into his laptops etc were stolen while they were asleep, they were told if they challenged the intruders they would probably be dead now. There have been a number of times their alarm has gone off as the natives try the system out. I don't care how much rugby is on I would not live there.
I worked with a South African and told him what my brother intended and his words were, my brother was mad, that says it all for me.
My brother does enjoy the rugby on TV he just misses the Celtic league games.

Well crime is bad here, but in my experience it is declining every year. Just all the politicians messing everything up.
As for where to go - I am from the Western Cape and would recommend it. My colleagues in Gauteng however feels that the Western Cape is part of Europe. It looks the same just smaller and has the same weather. So if you want something else then go to one of the more rural provinces like KZN. Sorry the KZN thing was a joke, but you can maybe try out Limpopo or North West. It is much dryer though.

Re: Why you must come live in SA if you love rugby.
No one is going to lie to you and say that crime is non existent in SA but at least in the Western Cape, its not all that different to Europe. When I first travelled to SA I was a little uptight, always on guard and truth be told I had an excellent time with no trouble.
The old Transvaal... totally different, its near a different country, people look different, talk different etc. I've only been a few times myself so I can't say what its like but from others, I wouldn't deny they have a problem with crime.
I would say Cape Town is near as safe as London. The only difference is that generally you can't walk around the city like you can in old European cities, as much for the threat of crime as the logistics of it. A lot of the crime is concentrated in the townships which are technically counted as Cape Town but are in reality... perhaps 30-40kms outside of the city centre.
Some friends of mine from the UK came to visit a few years back. They hired a car and drove to PE from Cape Town. At one point inbetween the 2 cities their car broke down near a township... they thought their number was up and started panicking when they saw a group of men approaching them..
what happened next, these guys revealed a jack and some tools and got their car started and fixed. Didn't even ask for money afterwards.
An isolated incident perhaps but its a lovely story about how the human spirit is alive and well in SA even though we have serious issues. I do know people who have had bad experiences but it it does remind me that life here isn't so bad, people from townships are necessarily just out to rob you and that many are kind & generous yet given the conditions they live in/were placed under under the previous/current govt. you'd almost think it was fair game to act in such a manner.

I have been a short term broker for 15 years in SA, and live in JHB, in those 15 years only twice have clients of mine been robbed whilst at their houses and been under threat where they were bound and treated with violence.
For the guy that lives in SA there is certain procedures you take, one is where you live, I live in a security area and have heard of no incidents since I moved here 6 years ago.
The next step is to not look for trouble, for example don't go withdraw money from an ATM at 3h00 in the morning, that is simply daft.
Our children are no longer safe to play in the streets like we did as kids, but it doesn't only have to do with violence or crime, it has to do with traffic and safety aspects.
sure there are crimes, a wise old client of mine once told me there are only three things negative in SA.
1. Interest rates -so buy cash
2. Crime - so secure your home
3. Tax - you can't do much about that.
But the benefits of living in SA are numerous, it is a vibrant country, sport mad, great outdoors living, good produce, meats, great restaurants, climate, and ultimately not much different from most other societies.

Right now...climate,climate, climate would be the selling point. Rugby on TV? Well, yes...after a few months out and about in something called sun - which is a thing I hear is plentiful there - I might then stay in a night or two to watch some rugby.

For any rugby fan a trip to Newlands to see a Currie Cup match or a SR match is a must do thing. The place is a cauldron and the atmostphere is fantastic. Its the home of rugby in SA.. you can buy tickets in any supermarket and all tickets are £10, the highest I've ever paid was r160 (about £15) which was for a Currie Cup semi-final. Very good value for the quality of sport you see... and its bang in the middle of the city.
SR schedules come out at the end of the year so you have time to build holidays around that... make sure you go when they're at home rather than on their ANZAC tour.
Best time to go is probably Feb-Apr as you get good weather and the rugby season is in full flow. If you're on holiday with the missus the stadium is close to many top hotels so you can always send her on a half day spa treatment whilst you go and watch first class rugby... she'll never know

FerN: "one of the more rural provinces like KZN"....naughty naughty. KZN, scientifically speaking, is actually the centre of the universe. (I believe Maritzburg is the actual spot)

My brother lives in Plettenberg Bay in a very nice house overlooking the sea, the downside is needing a bolt hole room if they are threatened, the security company has come out three times in a year (they are armed). It is hardly surprising there are issues when you have wealth in areas around townships. My brother keeps him computer in his hide away.

Thats always the case unfortunately.. the richest areas always have the worst crime rates (well bar townships). Middle class regions often have much less crime.
In Cape Town the worst areas for home invasions are the old english areas of Claremont etc.. they're old ENG houses, little security and quite close to poorer areas. People who live there are nice, don't want any trouble and won't put up a fight.
In the Northern suburbs you have less wealth, more security and are more likely to be met with an armed Afrikaner resident willing to go toe to toe with you if you raid his house.
Its no contest really. You have to have common sense... you don't park a slamming new merc outside your house... thats just asking for trouble.
