Bad Ragaz, in Switzerland.
Charles is in 3rd place, ahead of Woosnam, Forsbrand, Torrance, Mason, Rocca, Johnstone, Wolstenholme, Kuramoto, Harwood, a pair of Brands etc.

Bad Ragaz, in Switzerland. I don't know anything about it, but 66 at age 76 is phenomenal on any course.
Ian Woosnam - 68, Carl Mason 69.
Great effort by Bob Charles.

Not to be out-done, 77-y-o Gary Player finishes Round 2 with a 70.
Sir Bob finding Saturday a little trickier, but then he's entitled to!

Re: Bob Charles
There are probably a lot of tour pros who couldn't play that well.
Oliver Fisher for example.

Anyone know if either are scheduled to play at the Senior Open? I'm up in Jockland that weekend and will probably go for a day. I don't expect the crowds will be that big

Re: Bob Charles
Hi Jas
Sir Bob generally plays the British Seniors.
I practiced next to him at Turnberry a couple of years ago.
His routine was quite strange and it took me a while [without gauking too much] to realise that he was playing an 18 hole round on the range.
He would wait 5 mins between shots.
I was there for about an hour and he had hit about 15 shots.
Really nice guy and a class act all round. He holds a very high title in NZ, way above Sir'ship. Order of Garter type of NZ role.
Howler doing well again.
Give me a PM if you are down my way?

Hi Doon, yeah good to see David in the mix again, shame he just came up a bit short today, looks like Jason had a good day on Francesco's bag.
I will be up that weekend (when the seniors are at Turnberry) struggling to get time off at the mo so it may be a Friday night/Sunday night drive :(If I do manage to squeeze the Friday off I'll travel up Thurs night and look to have a round Friday.
Think I'll defo go down to Turnberry on the Saturday, just hope all the big names make the cut.

Jas
I should be about, Saturday is family ticket day at Turnberry and my eldest daughter is there with her business. I may be hepling her.
Howler up 40 places in the OOM. Did you see Franny started with a double bogey 6 in his round of 64. Jason probably gave him the wrong club!!

Re: Bob Charles
A few of us are playing Turnberry the week after the Senior Open next month. Really looking forward to it and looking on it a little bit like the golfing equivalent of Wembley <feel free to insert alternative iconic stadium/venue>.
How good is it anyone and how much better/tougher is it likely to be the week after a major compared to "normal" (if any different)?
I think I'll struggle to shoot 2.5 times my age (I'm 37 and allegedly off 5)!

66 at age 76 is gob-smackingly good. If I ever succeed in shooting my age I'll be a happy bunny.

Re: Bob Charles
Rollercoaster.
Re Turnberry.
The greens will be very fast, spend quite a bit of time on the excellent practice green to get used to the pace. Same with the deep practice bunkers/green on the side of the range.
Before play you can usually hit balls off turf from the top end of the range [backwards], ask first though and allow extra time.
The rough is MURDER up here at the moment, so play safe off the tee.
Turnberry like Muirfield does not tighten the course up very much for an Open.
There will be a lot of distractions as they take down the stands etc.

Nearest I have come to shooting my age is 76-64=12.
Can anyone beat that?
Mind you at the other scale I have also had a 60-19=41

Re: Bob Charles
Cheers Doon - much appreciated.
I like it when courses don't feel the need to tweak too much just because the big boys are coming (ie the pro's, not referring to our little jaunt!). You get a much better feel as to how good they are compared to us "normal" golfers when they have substantially the same track (albeit off different knockers).
Can't wait for the greens, full shots might be a bit daunting though by the sounds of it. Will I break 90... If I don't it will clearly be due to all the distractions, not my wild approach to the game!
I have suggested a reverse medal, highest gross wins.

Re: Bob Charles
Leap year....yea totally stuffed.
Roller, can't quite agree with you there.
The basic difference between the members medal tees and the Championship tees at Turnberry is about 4 shots for a scratch player. I would imagine it is about 3 at Muirfield.
The Turnberry members and Pros get to play off the Championship tees a couple of times a year.
I played Troon Darley yesterday and if it had been a medal I would have struggled to break 100 but managed 33 points stableford [off 14]. The rough makes Lawrie's Carnoustie look like a piece of cake.
3 wood/rescue off the tee and keep it in play, trouble with that strategy is that it gives you long irons to the greens on many holes. As I found out yesterday. As a two ball we lost 7 balls.[4 at the 5th hole].
I did not check my bag before play and I only had 6 new balls and a tattie.
Expensive round but at least I had three balls left
