Rees v Mathews
my favourite fight of the night to be honest. simply because i think it could turn out to be the most competitive. derry was doing well last time before the stoppage. particularly the first 2 rounds. maybe rees took him too lightly last time, and im sure he will realise by now how tough of a fight this could be. both men tend to fade later on in fights and could come down to who can last it out. mathews can been backed at 4/1, pretty good value i reckon

I've always liked Gavin Rees, solid fighter. I'd happily put him in with the winner of Burns and Mitchell

Re: Rees v Mathews
Hes gutsy - makes the most of his limited ability - a few more of him and boxing would be thriving because only the best would make it to the top
Re: Rees v Mathews
Wonder if Rees could ever make Super Feather, height wise he is tiny for lightweight but would be a machine down at SF, although Id still fancy him against most at Lightweight.

Rees wants a shot at the title...if Burns has got the guts to meet me in the ring or...anywhere else
His whole lifes been directed towards this title
He lives in Newbridge. He trains in Newbridge. He wins the title in Newbridge.
He wants Burns. He cant duck Rees forever. Burns can run...but he cant hide

Re: Rees v Mathews
I would still pick mitchell and burns to beat him fairly comfortably,
Matthews showed rees could be outboxed by keeping it at range with a good jab and decent footwork, two things both possess
He doesn't have the power to really hurt them either and unlike Matthews who has a history of fading, they won't be worn down
I guess that he will be insiders for the winner of the burns-Mitchell fight because of longertivity around the top
Matthews should be proud and will get a good payday for a crolla rematch although I see him losing that as he does fade as bad as any fighter I've seen in the past and crolla will know to work the body

Thing with Rees is I think his best days are behind him...
Nothing but praise for the way he's overachieved and his heart..
But determination only gets you so far and I think against Mitchell and burns he's too easy to hit..

Why not stick Rees in with Scott Harrison as a final eliminator (conveniently forgetting any other LW's who might NOT inhabit the British Isles)?

Rees v Harrison is a good shout, Harrison wants a shot but for me he has to beat a contender.

Trouble is though, is Rees really a "contender"? Mind you, we are talking about the WBOThe Galveston Giant wrote:Rees v Harrison is a good shout, Harrison wants a shot but for me he has to beat a contender.

Re: Rees v Mathews
Although i didn't see Harrisons last fight i think it would be a good fight for him at this stage, Rees isn't a contender but has more right to the fight than Harrison for me at the moment.

Re: Rees v Mathews
Would like to see Harrison-Murray and the winner face off vs Rees
Harrison beat an overmatched and soft opponent for his comeback so, although pretty sharp, hasn't done enough to suggest he can hang with the top domestic guys atm. Murray has been training hard and is back September time but he has shown that he fringe world level with a good performance against Mitchell (untill the stoppage) and a spirited effort vs rios

Good shout...Harrison/Murray has "war" written all over it. Tough comeback fight for Murray who could shorten his career with another bruising encounter especially against someone like Harrison who absolutely loves a tear-up.
Both got something to prove to themselves AND the fans and I think that's a fight that should be made without delay

Re: Rees v Mathews
Interesting...I agree it's a potentially a good matchup
Depends how much each has left...Can Harrison close Murray's eyes before his tank expires....
Been disappointed with Murray...thought he was better than he turned out.
No head movement...
Harrison had class but I think he's abused his body too much..
Murray by late stoppage..

Re: Rees v Mathews
I think Harrison and Murray are two peas in a pod. They both had potential and turned in some good performances but then seemed to stall then get derailed.
Could be the battle of the body punchers.
Murray needs to pace himself but he hasn't managed it so far so what's to say he'll do it now? Mind you, I said Froch couldn't box behind his jab for a sustained period of time ....then he went and fought Abraham. I also said he struggled with slick fighters like he'd done with Taylor (early), Dirrell and Ward...then he went and fought Bute

Re: Rees v Mathews
Murray has Paul Hodkinson disease........
A dirty look and his eyes swell up!!
He's finished..but not as finished as Scott and It's a shame because he had class!!
Be like an entertaining car wreck...
Be a good warm up for Haye-Chisora!!

Shame they can't get it made for this weekend...or are you talking about the inevitable rematch that the Haye/Chisora fight will demand?

Re: Rees v Mathews
Murray is very limited but hits the body pretty well ad although has one pace but that one pace can easily throw 70 punches a round.
Harrison was easily the better boxer but at 34 ad a tough life I don't know if he can keep up with Murray and isn't quick enough to keep him away so a slug fest is very likely with Murray coming out on top
It is an easy sell, Murray draws big crowds and Harrison is trying to reignite his career, both need a big win so they can carry on boxing

Re: Rees v Mathews
We don't know what Murray has left after two thrashings which is probably what makes it intriguing!!!
A last hurrah for the winner me thinks..
