Music Cup Round 6 - Manchester - Pick 3!
The Music Cup Round 6 - Manchester
The lead at the top has changed for the first time and I'm no longer top!
This round is all about bands/singers from Manchester and its surrounding area.
So without further ado the choices are...
Buzzcocks - Ever Fallen in Love
David Gray - Sail Away
Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart
New Order - True Faith
Oasis - Champagne Supernova
Oasis - Don't Look Back in Anger
Oasis - Wonderwall
Stone Roses - She Bangs the Drum
The Hollies - Bus Stop
The Verve - Bittersweet Symphony
As usual pick your fave three!
Youtube links will go up tonight as at work at mo (unless someone fancies adding them up?)

Three by Oasis and nothing from the majestic Inspiral Carpets? Shame on you

Re: The Music Cup Round 6 - Manchester
amazingly I did consider "this is how it feels" but felt that no one would vote for it!
I am also surprised by the Hollies choice - surely either Nights in White Satin or He aint heavy would have been more popular choices.

White Satin was the Moody Blues and they weren't from Manc

Re: The Music Cup Round 6 - Manchester
I have to admit that for this round I could have picked a number of songs that would be on most of my playlists (particularly surprised by the absence of ‘How Soon is Now’ by the Smiths and ‘I Wanna Be Adored’ or ‘I Am the Resurrection’ by the Stone Roses.
As a youngster growing up a few miles south of Manchester most of my weekends were spent around Afflecks Palace and the Coliseum.

Nights in white Satin is a great song though.

here comes the heavywieght spelling police again
Agree about Nights in White Satin being great and it leads me onto a slightly off topic comment but is A Whiter Shade of Pale possibly the greatest song ever written?>

Re: The Music Cup Round 6 - Manchester
And where are the Charlatans? And the Happy Mondays?
And I'd have probably picked Blue Monday over True Faith, but there are some great choices. I could have cast my vote for all of the songs listed (apart from David Gray)

Maybe George Michaels version of Blue Monday has forever tainted it for the person who picked it!

This isn't 606 - you don't have multiple accounts so seconding your own comments still only counts as one vote

Re: The Music Cup Round 6 - Manchester
WHAT?
Oasis provided two of the seminal albums of the 90's. "What's the story morning glory" is owned by pretty much everyone in the UK - it's a record shelf mainstay. At a time when guitar driven music was on its deathbed, put there by faux-trance, europoppy, cheesy rudey poo, they were the shot in the arm the genre needed. Oasis were by no means revolutionary, or even original - bands were doing what they were doing already, and better, particularly in Manchester - but they brought it to the masses with their tabloid enticing swagger and their closing-time sing-a-long refrains.
I'm a guitar player, so this is not the throwaway comment of someone who doesn't know what they are talking about, but I honestly believe Noel Gallagher is in the top 10 guitarists of all time. Certainly not in terms of technical ability - but Noel knows his limits, but also knows how to get the most out of those restrictions. Noel Gallagher can write a gluttony of masterpieces with three or four chords and some basic pentatonic scale solos. And that requires as much talent as a 10 minute, epic shred solo in my opinion.
Unfortunatley, after the mainstream success of WTSMG, Oasis did become a parody, not only of themselves, but of the Beatles - and this Oasis, trying to force anthems, like Coldplay do, and trying to write songs that mattered to the masses that they just couldn't represent anymore, became a poor band.

Re: The Music Cup Round 6 - Manchester
What I think Oasis particularly suffered from is that after the first 2 albums they lost the ‘common touch’, they began creating songs that no longer struck a chord with their fan base which was mainly blokes who worked all week and then liked a drink at the weekend. Songs were no longer discussing real life for them.
The Smiths were perfect at this, others too like the first Arctic Monkeys album and the earlier Streets albums, they managed to connect with the working masses and perfectly summed up the feeling of the generation.

I'd be happy with any of those 3 as winners, all good choices IMO.

Re: The Music Cup Round 6 - Manchester
what is hip hop?
I am doomed in this round!
If I thought it would get any vote other than my own, I would go for Bel Biv Devoe with Poison.
