How many Golds for GB?
How many Golds for GB?
GB's gold tally was 19 in 2008. Can we beat that?

A few more cycling and rowing golds. Dont think Ainsle will win gold this time. Possible one or 2 in athletics and that's it.

Percy looks like potentially winning sailing the Star Keelboat class if Ben Doesn't get gold in the Finn.
Wouldn't write off Ben just yet though. Hannah mills and Saskia Clarke 470, nick windsurfing and possibly team MacLush in the match racing are all potential sailing golds too.

I think we're looking at around 12. Cycling and rowing should bump up the golds a fair bit more, especially the former.
There's windsurfing in the Olympics? Sailing is bad enough, but windsurfing is taking the biscuit a bit.

Might do it in the soccer... Unfortunately that gives one medal rather than the eleven handed out.

I do think we'll get at least 16. I see many good chances over the next 10 days. Expect them to come in bunches again like last time.

Plenty more cycling and rowing opportunities, and don't forget the boxing. Plus a couple of swimming, the Triathlon and perhaps the Modern Pentathlon. Then a fair few half chances. So we'll do well to get 20 but its certainly not out of the question.

Boxing looks good, hockey too, these lads didn't play their best today but they are in parts very close to being a decent team.

Re: How many Golds for GB?
I suspect we'll end up with 10-15 (probably 14 or 15).
A few things to consider:
Triathlon - the Brownlee brothers could well take gold and silver, and it would certainly be a surprise if neither won.
Track cycling - we aren't in such dominant form as in Beijing. Will take a lot of medals but perhaps not many golds (my guess is 3). Also, the individual pursuit events have been removed from the schedule - Wiggins and Romero won the respective golds in those in Beijing.
Sailing: Percy looks in a good position, AInslie is in contention but will need to perform exceptionally from now on to close the gap.
Team sports - Both hockey teams are going well, as are the women footballers. Good medal chances in all three, and I wouldn't be surprised if one of them manages to take gold.

I think we will get about 13, or 14 gold medals. Which is still a fantastic performance and should be viewed as such. Can't help but think that we over-performed somewhat in 2008 and have had our expectations raised unrealistically.

Re: How many Golds for GB?
Rowing and cycling alone should bump us up considerably and the boxers might just surprise a few people yet.
We may take a couple of golds in the athletics if Jessica Ennis and Mo Farah do the business but the decline of Philips Idowu is disappointing.
Most disappointing, from my personal point of view, is the loss of Paula Radcliffe. No matter what anybody says, she was a great marathon runner and after her heartbreaks in Athens and Beijing, I had hoped she would come good in London and show us that she's not a 'choker', as some allege. Sadly, it's not to be and I think nobody is hurting more about that than she is.
We will pick up a few more golds here and there. Rebecca Adlington in the pool, Beth Tweddle in the Asymetric Bars at the gymnastics, and the triathletes... open water swimmers... those sort of events, will chip in too.
I voted for 10 - 15 gold medals and I reckon it will be in the upper part of that margin, not the lower. I would be delighted to be proven wrong, provided I'm wrong in the right direction. Upwards, that is.

I voted 20+ yesterday. Now we're on 5. More cycling to come, more rowing to come, Hockey, Football, Athletics, Tennis, Sailing, Boxing and maybe some in the Triathlon or Diving. We're gonna get more than 20!

Football and tennis I don't see Golds. Medals possibly, Golds no. The rest all half decent gold prospects, medals are pretty likely.

I'm seeing a Gold for Andy Murray in the tennis as well as the Woman's football team. There should also be Gold for the men's football team if they can beat Brazil (not that I'm overlooking South Korea!).

GB women's will lose to a better side, although they do look pretty decent. I think GB will get floored by Brazil should they play them, could lose to other sides too. As for Murray, doubt it.

Re: How many Golds for GB?
Murray's got the simple task of beating Djokovic in the semi final and then probably Federer in the final, so I think it's reasonable to say his chances aren't great. Might actually have more opportunity in the mixed doubles along with Robson - they've just beaten one of the best teams in the tournament.
The women footballers look to have been inspired by the home support, and are really impressing me. The men's team less so. Perhaps silver and bronze respectively. Hockey, particularly the women, look a better chance of the gold.
I might have to revise my guess from earlier up to 16-20, as we took a couple of bonus golds today - the cyclists were always a reasonable chance (although this season's form had suggesteed silver or bronze rather than domination), and the canoeing was always a possible medal but gold and silver was beyond expectations. And then the shooting gold... real bonus

Re: How many Golds for GB?
Basically there is only one sailing event where we look pretty unlikely to win a medal of any description, that is Paul Goodison in the Laser mens singlehanded class. Unfortunately Paul has an injury and can't race to his full potential.
He previously won Gold in Beijing, so he is a big loss to Team GBR's effort.
Otherwise Finn, Star, 470 boys and girls, 49er and both mens and womens windsurfing are all poss golds

I went with 16-20.
Don't ask me which ones but they should get another 10 or 11 at least I feel.
(unlike our mob who'll be lucky to get more than 8 at the rate they're going)

Re: How many Golds for GB?
I reckon at least:
3 more rowing golds (2 nailed on IMO), 3 more cycling golds, 2 golds in athletics, a gold in boxing, a gold in sailing, a gold in a team ball sport.
So 16-20, if not more. If we don't manage, oh well that's life

Re: How many Golds for GB?
I had doubted 20 Duty....but I will be very pleased if I am proven wrong. It has been an amazing week for British sport...perhaps people will be a little less pessimistic in the future. When you think of some of the headline's coming out of the first 3 days when we hadn't got off the mark...
I have just posted on the medal thread but I will repeat the post here...their are plenty of opportunities for much more success:
6 boxers in the QF's so should be some more medals in that.
Then we have the dressage (horses) where we have good chance in the individual and the team event.
We still have track cycling left where I think we have maybe 4 medal chances..
Obviously we will pick up two in the tennis...just a question of which colour.
In the sailing I would say we have 4 very good medal chances...
Gymnastics - We still have Beth & Smith to go in the Individual events...
That isn't even taking into consideration Diving, Syncro Swimming, Triathlon (where the Browlee brothers have an amazing chance of a 1-2), BMX, Mountain Biking, Hockey....and then possibly some more on the track!!
So yeh lots still to look forward to..
Sumptuous Sunday....Magical Monday....Tremendous Tuesday....Wonderful Wednesday....!!
Come On Team GB!!

Possibly 4 more Gold medals tomorrow for Team GB, with Andy Murray in singles and Mixed Doubles, Vicky Pendleton in Cycling, Ben Ainslie in Sailing!

The Star class sailing are even more likely that Ainslie.
I reckon the Big O has a better chance than what people are saying, and we've got Clancy to finish the Omnium. Pendleton doesn't have a final tomorrow.
Aldama in the Triple Jump and Louis Smith on the Pommel Horse are good chances aswell.

2 golds, sincerely doubt it. One? Doubles maybe think Federer is gunning for this. Olympics aren't too important in tennis but likes fo Rafa have won it and that will motivate Federer. I like Murray as a player but hoping Federer wins, cap off a great career.

Well Murray it seems looks to be playing better than Lord Federer during this Olympics tennis, and Murray also can get the crowd behind him which can give him the extra energy and fire which can help him to overcome Lord Federer. I actually believe that by playing in the men's doubles and in the mixed doubles competitions, this has also helped Andy Murray in his singles performances.

Well, that's Ainslie in for 15. 20 should be pretty easy going really, we've got plenty more options.
We've got good chances in the show-jumping, our dressage team has a good chance of two golds. Brownlee is a pretty warm favourite, and all those cycling chances (Including Reade in the BMX). It could be closer to 25 without too many surprises.

With the swimming and archery starting the Olympics off, it seemed that GB&NI were heading for a "disastrous" Olympics. But elsewhere there have been some mammoth, mammoth performances.

Would be good for Reade to get a medal, but I get the impression her temperament gets the better of her. Shame she didn't keep up on the track team sprint, because Varnish made a big mistake in this years Olympics.djlovesyou wrote:... all those cycling chances (Including Reade in the BMX). I voted for 16-20 , with some confidence : wondering now if that was too conservative
15 up and plenty of chances left in Cycling, T & F , Boxing , Triathlon , Equestrian , maybe even Gymnastics...plus more possibles in Sailing. Oh and Tennis and Taekwondo ...I'll stop I'm getting carried away
Of course some of these chances will disappear ... But you'd have to figure on a few more getting up...whatever it ends up , is going to be on the high end of all our hopes.

Re: How many Golds for GB?
Selby, Campbell, Stalker, Evans, Ogogo, Joshua in the Mens boxing..
Jones who just won & Adams on the female side..so thats 8 opportunities in the boxing.
Dressage - I believe we lead in both the team & individual..also we have the Individual & Team Jumping still to come.
Then we have Smith in the Gymnastics and Beth also going in the individual bars...
Cycling - We have 5 events left in the cycling aswell as Reade in the BMX.
The Brownlee brothers are more than warm favourites for Gold in the Triathlon...great opportunity for a 1-2 in that.
Sailing - No gold but chance for Dempsey to pick up silver in the Sailboard. Currently lying in 2nd in the 470 both male & female so 2 chances their. Could medal in the Elliot 6..however chances are Australia will take Gold their as they are in imperious form. We also sit 4th in the 49er but still 5 races left in that so lots could change.
Taekwondo - We have 4 entered but im unsure of medal chances to be honest.
Tennis - 2 Silver Medals at least...one hopes for at least 1 Gold.
Hockey - Both the men & women currently lie 2nd in their respective groups, fingers crossed both can make it through. Looks like a tougher ask for the Women who need to beat the so far unbeaten Netherlands in their final group game.
Syncro Swimming - We have good representation here and enter both the team & duet...again not sure of the chances of Gold but a medal is an achievable target.
Diving - Still have the mens' 3 & 10 m...represented in both..and then the womens 10m. I should expect the Chinese to dominate here but an outside medal chance in 1 perhaps.
Then we have the athletics...
Triple Jump - Idowu & Aldama
Pole Vault - Bleasdale has an outside shot of perhaps a Bronze
5000 - Could Mo double up...
Im sure their are plenty more. So yes I think 20 + is very achievable...
Lots to look forward and cheer on in the coming days.
Team GB you beauties.
As a side not...how does everyone see the 100m unfolding tonight?..I have had a cheeky bet on the dirty american that is Gatlin to shock everyone...
Also have an accumulator running on Blake for the 100...Bolt 200...Jamaica World Record in 4x100...Ennis Heptathlon...Mo to do the Double...

Jonas fights Taylor tomorrow, Katie will need to win well, any close fights will generally go to the homw fighter as is the way in amateur boxing.
Selby, Campbell and Joshua will win Gold. Everyone else should win a medal as well. With another couple of favourable decisions you could be looking at 6-7 golds.
