Shame that Ian Percy and Andrew Simpson could only manage silver, they must be devastated...
But the girls in the 470 class two woman dinghy are looking great...

Given where were now the thread should be talking about chances for 20 - 24, 25 to 29 or 30 plus.
If we don't get at least 20 now some things will have gone seriously wrong. Boxing could take them to that level without any other sport contributing!
25 to 29 would be the most likely IMHO. 30 plus would require more magical evenings like last night but would certainly be possible.

Is Payne likely to medal in the marathon swim?

We're on 18 now, still 2 chances tonight I believe - the women's pole vault and the men's 400m hurdles.

Let's hit 20 first and take it a gold at a time. But there are chances for 25

Re: How many Golds for GB?
Here's some optimism, some chap called Josh Feehily has just tweeted to the BBC:
"#bbc2012 Ten golds behind China who won't offer much from now on, Team GB have a great chance of second."

Re: How many Golds for GB?
Oakey, off the top of my head, potential golds:
Greene (unlikely IMO but certainly possible)
Mo in 5k (I think he'll do it)
Pendleton in the ladies' sprints (favourite)
Hoy in the keirin
Payne in the 10k swim (good chance)
One of the Brownlees in men's triathlon
Team and Individual dressage (I believe one of our riders is leading the individuals and we are leading the team)
Apparently several male and at least one female boxers
Brabants in the kayak
Our hockey teams (unlikely)
Idowu in 3-jump (unlikely IMO)
Bleasdale (unlikely IMO)
Women's Omnium cycling (looking possible)
Maybe some sailing medals? Maesteg will know
Reade in the ladies' BMX
Spence in the Pentathlon
Easily another 7 possibles in there!

Re: How many Golds for GB?
Interesting list CJ.
Brabants is unlikely. There are 1 or 2 others in Canoe Sprint though that could win. In athletics there is Robbie Grabartz in the HJ. Also individual Show Jumping and definately some in Sailing and Boxing. Also 1 or 2 in Taekwando.
After tonight no chance obviously for Bleasdale or Greene.
Don't believe Spence is a possible Gold medalist.

Re: How many Golds for GB?
And I think that winning a past Olympic gold is a big advantage for Brabants at this level

I'd love to be proved wrong on Brabants and Spence.

Spence is certainly in with a chance.
Sadly Brabants is a no-hope. He only just scraped through both the heats and semi-finals.
I can't see Grabarz getting gold, but who knows.

Re: How many Golds for GB?
Grabarz looked very good in qualifying. Reckon he has a good chance , but there are a few others who are very capable of winning that event.
He has been pretty consistent in what is often a rather up and down business ( sorry ) so if he keeps his nerve , which he has done rather well at the Diamond League events , I quite rate his chances. May need a new British record to win though.
Agree Brabants not a real chance - he is a real fighter and will lift again for the final , but I can't se him defending his title.

Duty281, You were the first to pick "More than 20". At that time GB had only 8G. Salute you, Sir.

Re: How many Golds for GB?
Well, I was way off - reckoned about 14 after the first couple of days.
29 is a pretty amazing tally out of 303 available titles, so we won just fewer than 10% of the events. The amazing thing is how close we came to making it even better:
Louis Smith in the gymnastics tied for marks with the winner
Percy and Simpson were one decent gust of wind from gold in the sailing
One of our rowing squads (quad skulls?) was about a foot away from the win
Jamieson in the 200m breaststroke was only a finger's length behind a guy who had to break the WR to beat him
Skelton in the show jumping was over the last tricky fence then knocked the third last that had hardly caused any problems, otherwise was in a jump off for the gold.
Could very easily have been 31 or so golds with just a touch more luck.

Re: How many Golds for GB?
Don't forget Pendleton's unfortunate relegations. Could easily have been 35, just 3 off China.
Quite funny reading back through this, I did predict 25G before the games and 15 a few days in.
Goldman Sachs were virtually bang on: http://www.goldmansachs.com/our-thinking/topics/global-economic-outlook/olympics-and-economics-.pdf

Re: How many Golds for GB?
ER
Pendleton was far from a certainty for either gold though - team sprint we were quite well behind the Chinese in the qualifying round (and they suffered a similar DQ in the final, meaning the Germans won the gold with what was clearly only the third best team in the competition). Mears stuffed her in the second sprint, after being very close in the first (even without the harsh but accurate disqualification), so may well have been favourite had the deciding sprint been needed.
There was also a bit of divine justice, as Pendleton won the world title this year courtesy of opponents being DQed in both the semi-final (Kupakaite) and final (Mears).

Re: How many Golds for GB?
Nah, the Germans were within a whisker of beating China who gave too much in the heats. I'm confident Pendleton and Varnish would've won the final.
Being 1-0 up in a best of 3 is a massive confidence boost for the sprint, so again, there is no doubt in my mind that Vicky would've won the 2nd round and taken gold. She definitely wouldn't have lost both.
