Vernon, Florida
Vernon, Florida is a 1981 documentary film produced and directed by Errol Morris profiling various eccentric residents living within the town of Vernon, Florida. Originally titled Nub City, this follow-up to Gates of Heaven was initially focused on residents of the Southern town who cut off their own limbs as a way to collect insurance money. After Morris's life was threatened by the subjects of the film, he re-worked Nub City into Vernon, Florida.

American Movie
American Movie: The Making of Northwestern is a 1999 documentary directed by Chris Smith. The film chronicles the real 1996-1997 making of Coven, an independent horror film directed by an independent filmmaker named Mark Borchardt. Produced for the purpose of raising capital for another film that Borchardt intends to make, the epic Northwestern, Coven suffers from numerous setbacks, including poor financing, a lack of planning, Borchardt's burgeoning alcoholism, and the ineptitude of the friends and family Borchardt hires to staff the production team.[1] The documentary follows Borchardt's filmmaking process from script to screen, and is interspersed with footage from both developing projects. American Movie was produced by Sarah Price, edited by Jun Diaz and Barry Poltermann and directed by Chris Smith. Filming for American Movie began in September 1995 and concluded in August 1997.[2] The film was a critical success upon its debut and went on to win the Grand Jury prize for Documentary at the Sundance Film Festival, and has since gone on to become a cult film.

Re: Documentaries
Brother's Keeper
Brother's Keeper is a 1992 documentary directed by Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky. The film is about an alleged 1990 murder in the village of Munnsville, New York. The film is in the "Direct Cinema" style of the Maysles brothers who had formerly employed Berlinger and Sinofsky.
The film contrasts two groups of society; people from rural areas and
those from larger cities. It also exhibits how the media flocked to the
town to cover the story.
This movie displays two completely opposite views of the Ward
brothers. One opinion is that of the locals, who defend the Ward
brothers as simple country folk. The other is that of the press, who
stereotype the brothers as uneducated hicks.
The Ward sister was not featured in this film because of her death in
the 1980s. However, her daughter Pat makes an appearance in the DVD's
special features

Re: Documentaries
I'm not sure whether or not you meant documentary films and/or TV documentaries, so I'll do both.
24 Hours & A & E - really enjoying this fly-on-the-wall doc of life in the A & E department at Kings College Hospital, London. All of humanity is there. It's funny. moving and makes you think. Dispatches and Unreported World do some great current affairs documentaries. Frozen Planet was fantastic really enjoyed that series and some of the shots were just breathtaking.
For documentary films I'd highly recommend Life In A Day. Absolutely brilliant.

Re: Documentaries
Speaking of documentaries, did anyone see "The Girl Who Became Three Boys" on Channel 4? What a bizarre and mind boggling story. The documentary could've been more interesting had the makers examined why the cuplrit did what she did, but there was nothing about her background or anything. They seemed more interested in trying to find out why the girls fell for the deceit and what was done to them. Made it a bit tabloid-ish.

Re: Documentaries
America's Animal Hoarder: Horror at the Zoo
The sleepy town of Zanesville, Ohio became the centre of a media storm in October 2011 when 48 animals were found roaming a residential area, and shot dead after police realised they could not control the situation.
The animals killed included 18 tigers, 17 lions and 8 bears, and they belonged to Terry Thompson.
Thompson was later found dead on his farm, partially eaten by his own animals. This film tells the compelling story of this bizarre incident, while exploring the events in Thompson's past which led up to it.
With revealing police radio archive and exclusive interviews, this is a gripping account of what happened when one man's obsession with dangerous animals spiralled out of control.

It's only a short but the film shift happens is an intresting insight into how the world has changed, the documentary itself is out of date (refers to myspace) which in itself hammers home the point it is making

Re: Documentaries
A couple of random entries:
* Although not a wrestling fan, I was quite fascinated by a documentary on Bret "The Hitman" Hart when it was on TV some years back... Just looked it up - it's called "Hitman Hart: Wrestling with Shadows" - a surprisingly frank behind-the scenes look at the WWF (as I think it was then), concluding with "fortuitous" timing on this star performer's betrayal by the organisation. Actually, perhaps it wasn't that coincidental - one of the issues explored was Mr Hart's deliberations about leaving the WWF, so them stabbing him in the back was I suppose always a possibility once he had made that decision.
* I am a U2 fan though and am likely to be biased, but one of the funniest fly-on-the-wall documentaries I've seen is Bono's "A Day in the Life of The Edge", whereby the bandmates hang out for a day with a handheld camera whilst in Miami (I think it was) during the Vertigo tour.

Re: Documentaries
I've been watching quite a lot of documentaries recently and here is a few I think you guys may like.
The Invisible War - Taking a look into the 'r***' endemic that has plaqued the American Armed Forces for years and speaks to victims male and female and why it exists. Powerful stuff and somewhat disconcerting that the government views it as an 'Occupational Hazard'.
The Imposter - The story of an american kid that goes missing only for a boy to turn up in Spain and claim that he is the missing person in question. Very interesting and scary.
Deliver Us From Evil - Looks at the Catholic church and the way they protected a priest who for 30 years abused children in the state of California. Disturbing to think he got away with it for that long and they did nothing about it. One of the best documentaries I've seen.
We Are Legion - Documentary looking at the Hacktivist Group 'Anonymous' and it's inception. Very interesting.

Re: Documentaries
Recently I've watched a lot of docus and I recommend them for your viewing pleasure and thought provocation.
The Tillman Story - Pat Tillman was an all star multi millionaire NFL player and he gave it all up to join the US Rangers along with his brother and to serve his country, he was killed in Afghanistan in 2004 and this is the story into what happened and how the corrupt US Government tried to cover it all up.
Searching for Sugar Man - The story for the hunt of Rodriguez the american musician from the 1970s who didn't quite make it in the US but unbeknownst to him he was a huge hit in South Africa and this is the search by two South Africans to find out if he still exists and what became of him.
Born into Brothels - It takes a look into the red light districts of calcutta (circa 2004) and how the sons and daughters of women who work in the industry are effected by the industry and how it impacts upon their lives. An American photojournalist gives them the opportunity to document their lives through the medium of photography and tries to give them a way out through education.

Just finished watching 'West of Memphis'. The final chapter into the story surrounding the West Memphis Three who were incarcerated in the early 90s for the murder of three young boys. You can watch this as a standalone documentary but if you want to watch Paradise Lost 1/2/3 beforehand then I think you would gain a better understanding of the story as it unfolded.

Olly wrote:The "Inside Death Row" stuff Trevor McDonald has been doing with ITV is very interesting and quite disturbing
A good pair of programmes but I got the feeling it was rather in spite of STM's presentation rather than because of it. Louis Theroux's prison docs are far more engaging because he seems able to get the prisoners to volunteer their informatin and stories in a much more organic way. I guess Sir Trevor is just a bit too old school for that.
There was a very good doc on More 4 the other day, called (iirc) 'The Real Warhorse'. Told the story of the use of horses (and mules, donkeys etc) in WW1, when obviously they were vital to transport. Interestingly, it also told the story of successful use of cavalry even late in the war (1918), which is something that the basic narrative of the war glosses over - the story is always that cavalry was no use agaisnt the machine guns and heavily mechanised German army, but that was only really true during the trench war. Once forces were on the move, the rapidity and agility of the cavalry came back to the fore as a skirmishing force.

Re: Documentaries
I watched 'Mea Maxima Culpa - Silence in the house of god' today and it's a very interesting and informative documentary. Directed by Alex Gibney and it looks into the Catholic Church and the lengths it will go to cover up and protect child abusers and rapists within the priesthood. It's very similar to 'Deliver Us From Evil' and starts off with the victims of the crimes committed by Father Murphy in the 1950s and onwards at Milwaukees School for the deaf.
It's a damning documentary and one which no one can deny the dark depths that the Catholic Church will go to to cover up any scandals rather to protectit's image as opposed to protecting the innocent children at the hands of pedophile priests.
This is a true reflection of Catholicism and should raise the awareness of the atrocities committed by priests for centuries within the church who remain protected by Canon Law and Omerta.
