Stoke v Tottenham
Arsenal v Liverpool
West Brom v Newcastle
Southampton v Man United
Everton v Reading
Fulham v Chelsea
Swansea v Aston Villa
Norwich vs West Ham
- Spoiler:
- Both teams were coming off cup wins, as Spurs looked to continue their league push against a Stoke team that had made it tough for top teams to take 3 points. However Stoke were weakened after their cup exploits and it showed early on, Hazard going past 2 Stoke players before releasing debutant Damiao, whose first time shot struck the post before rebounding in off the back of Begovic. Stoke struggled to gain a foothold in the game, Owen being increasingly isolated, and as such it came as no surprise that most of the play was contained to Stoke’s half, Stoke defenders having to make last ditch tackles on more than one occasion. Spurs were patient however, and were rewarded with a 2nd just before halftime, Hazard again jinking away from Stoke players before clipping it to the backpost where an unmarked Bale couldn’t fail to score.
Halftime came and went, and Stoke still struggled to gain a foothold in midfield, but they managed to grab one back, Kakuta going past one and managing to win a corner, from which Huth rose highest to see his header hit bar and be turned home by Gibson. This didn’t faze Spurs however, as almost straight from kickoff Damiao teed of Hazard, whose placed shot into the corner just evaded Begovic. From then on Spurs seemed content to monopolise possession, and with Stoke unable to threaten the game petered out, just enough time left for Damiao to stun everyone in Stoke with a rainbow trick.
Expert Opinion (by Mark Lawrenson):
Stoke fielded a strong defense, but after their midweek game they were severely lacking firepower, and Spurs fielding a full strength 11 had too much for them and pressure told.
How the votes were spread
1-0-6
Stoke 1 – 3 Tottenham
Kakuta ’61; Begovic (OG) ‘4, Hazard ’43, ‘63
Arsenal v Liverpool
- Spoiler:
- We arrive here at The Emirates stadium for what should be an intriguing match up, with Liverpool under the new management of Martyr, and he is being thrown into the fire and Nando's Arsenal who are genuine challengers.
The match starts off with Arsenal dominating possession, and Cazorla goes close after 9 minutes with left footed shot well saved. Liverpool grew into the game a little bit more as the nerves settle down, with Carroll causing problems aerially for the Arsenal centre backs, who can be got at there. And it was Carroll who opened the scoring here, on 27 minutes, from a cross by Nani and Carroll outjumped his marker to send the travelling fans into raptures. This seemed to set Fernando alight on the sidelines, as he ripped into his players, and he got the desired reaction as only 5 minutes later, Arsenal equalised through Podolski. Then the game turned on its head in a frantic 10 minute period before half time. Liverpool couldn't get out of there half, and Arsenal targeted Van der Weil to great effect as Cazorla beat him, and teed up Podolski for his second as we headed to half time.
The second half started at a canter, with neither side creating any openings. However that changed on 59 minutes when again Van der Weil got beat and this time Giroud profited with a simple header to make it 3-1 and game all but over. Liverpool did try to get back into the game, but they seemed to lack many ideas, and the game just fizzled out towards the end with Arsenal taking the win.
The experts opinion (by Lee Dixon)
Liverpool got off to a good start, and Carroll showed a weakness in Arsenal's armour at centre back. But then Arsenal's attacking game came to the fore, and they dominated especially Van der Weil who was poor. In the end a comfy win for Arsenal who go marching on.
How the votes were spread
5-3-0
Arsenal 3-1 Liverpool
Podolski x2, Giroud - Carroll
West Brom v Newcastle
- Spoiler:
- The Hawthorne's was nearly full for the visit of a Newcastle side, who have been re-energised by some new signings.
The match started off quite slowly, with both sides keeping there cards close to there chests, with West Brom set out well in defence. Newcastle had the first chance on 20 minutes but Sigurdsson shot wide from 17 yards out. West Brom tried to get forward, and cause problems, and nearly scored on 33 minutes when Odemwingie headed into Krul's hands from 9 yards out. However Newcastle started to take control, and right on the stroke of half time they took the lead when Papiss Cisse broke through West Brom's high line to slot home cooly past Fulop on 44 minutes. The crowd was deflated by this strike as we went to half time.
The half time period seemed to be used well by the West Brom manager as his team came out all guns blazing, with the crowd right behind them. And on 54 minutes they had the perfect opportunity when Colocinni pulled down Odemwingie in the area for a penalty. Dorrans stepped up from the spot, and blazed it wide, looking at the spot on the floor. This seemed to knock the enthusiasm out of the crowd, and as much as West Brom tried to amount another push for that all important goal, Newcastle managed to deal with everything chucked at them and then rubbed salt in the wounds that man Cisse scored again on 88 minutes to give Newcastle a well deserved, but hard earned 2-0 win.
The experts opinion (by Gary Neville)
Newcastle fully deserved the win as they dominated possession and got the lead before the half. West Brom tried to play a high line and tried to do something but not quite enough for a point against a very good Newcastle side.
How the votes were spread
0-0-8
West Brom 0-2 Newcastle
Cisse x2
Southampton v Man United
- Spoiler:
- An easy game for United against a very poor southampton side, United dominated the midfield from the off set and quickly raced into a 1-0 lead when Forte slipped letting Schurrle in behind who finished clinical into the bottom corner after 10 minutes. Southampton nonplussed by conceding continued to defend but United were breaking through them at will with Rooney,Kagawa and Valencia all going close before Half Time. The second half continued in the same vein with United dominating the midfield with their numbers, After 60 mins Kagawa drifted out to the wing and linked up with Valencia who got in behind the defence and squared across the goal but Rooney missed from 5 yards out after a block from Forte making up for his mistake. After 75 mins Southampton finally come out of their defensive shell going to a 3-4-3 which nearly brought results as Heskey hit the bar with a header from a corner, Southampton started to press United going into the last few mins with many efforts at goal, United sat in and in the 92nd minute Strootman dispossessed Davis and he put Rooney through on goal who squared it to the edge of the area for Paul Scholes who drilled it past Gordon for 2-0.
Experts Opinion by Alan Shearer
Both sides set out looking like they hadn't been given tactics by their managers but luckily United had the better players on show and eventually their class shone through.
How the votes were spread
1-0-7
Manchester United 2-0 Southampton
Schurrle, Scholes
Everton v Reading
- Spoiler:
- Goodison Park was rocking despite the terrible weather conditions for the visit of surprise package Reading.
The match started off with Reading on the front foot, as they made there intentions clear with the 4-4-2 formation that they were here to get the win. And they took the lead on 11 minutes through Didier Drogba who finished powerfully from 10 yards out, and the Reading fans wondered if another great day at the office was on the cards. However this seemed to spark Everton into life, as they attacked with great pace down the wings with Lennon and Downing. However Reading managed to hold out till half time, where the real work for the managers began.
The second half started with Reading still in the 4-4-2 formation, but now Everton were dominating the midfield and running Reading ragged in there. And this showed as Pranjic scored on 55 minutes with a finish placed with great aplomb in the bottom corner. Now the match was in the balance, but the home crowd lifted the Toffees and they took the lead on 64 minutes through Jelavic, who latched onto the end of a Lennon cross. But Reading now found there second wind, and piled on the pressure. But Carlton Cole is the one who goes home with his head in his hands, as he missed a sitter from 4 yards out, blazing over the bar. This seemed to knock the stuffing out of Reading, and Everton scored again through substitute Donovan on 84 minutes to round off the win.
The experts opinion (by Steve Claridge)
Reading didn't do much tactically once they got ahead, and got overrun down the wings and in central midfield. Everton attacked down the wings and it paid off as Reading struggled at full back with the pace of Everton's wingers.
How the votes were spread
4-3-0
Everton 3-1 Reading
Pranjic, Jelavic, Donovan - Drogba
Fulham v Chelsea
- Spoiler:
- Craven Cottage was filled to the rafters today, for a local derby between two London clubs.
The first half started off lively, very much like a derby with not much being created but many great tackles going in especially from the Fulham team whose supporters were lapping up every moment of this game. However the first chance of the game came on 25 minutes and it was taken by Higuain who finished off cooly when put through by Lampard. This seemed to take the sting out of the crowd, and Fulham, and Chelsea sensed blood, with Lampard hitting the post from 25 yards out. And they struck a huge blow on 43 minutes when that man Higuain scored again, this time from a header from a Johnson cross. Fulham went in at half time 2-0 down.
The second half started, and Chelsea looked a little bit cocky as Fulham nearly scored on 49 minutes but Berbatov somehow contrived to miss from 5 yards out. This should have sturred Chelsea into life, but it didn't and Fulham took advantage on 57 minutes with Clint Dempsey cutting inside Ivanovic and curling home from 15 yards out. This brought the crowd to life, and every challenge won was cheered, and every decision against was booed. Chelsea seemed to freeze a little bit, and Higuain missed a golden opportunity on 69 minutes when put through again, but this time putting his finish wide. This seemed to spur Fulham on, and they managed to grab a late equaliser on 88 minutes when Dimitar Berbatov scored with a nice finish from a Dembele cross to earn Fulham a well earned point on there second half showing.
The experts opinion (by Gareth Southgate)
This was a funny old game. Fulham started string, but it was Chelsea who took the lead into the half and it looked like game over. However the Fulham midfield trio took over the second half, and they managed to get a well earned point.
How the votes were spread
3-2-3
Fulham 2-2 Chelsea
Dempsey, Berbatov - Higuian x2
Swansea v Aston Villa
- Spoiler:
- The Liberty was alive for the visit of Aston Villa, who had pulled of a good win in the cup the week before.
The first half was a fairly drab affair, as Villa decided to use a diamond formation, which made the central area a battlefield, where neither side could really get any moves of substance going. Adebayor hit a shot over the bar from 15 yards after 31 minutes which was the Swans best opportunity, and Howard had to make a smart save from a Bent half chance on the stroke of the half. We headed into half time, with not a lot happening at the Liberty for the Welsh fans to sing about.
However manager GSC had spotted a weakness, and at half time Swansea changed there style as they attacked Villa down the wings, and Hoilett waltzed past Lopes but dragged his shot past the far post on 51 minutes. Villa seemed a little flat this half, and Swansea took adavantage when Adebayor got his debut goal on 61 minutes from a Hoilett cross and sent the Swansea fans into delirium. Then Swansea made a change to sure up there midfield by taking off Bannan, and they nearly got the second when Dyer raced through but Fabianksi made a big save to keep Villa in with a chance. Then they made the telling change, when they shoved on a couple of wingers against tired Swansea full backs, and Agbonlahor skipped past Corluka to set up Bent to pounce from 6 yards out on 87 minutes. This was the final score in the end, and it was most definately a smash and grab by Villa.
The experts opinion (by Martin Keown)
The first half was a non event, but when Swansea got the ball out wide second half, they scored. However they went a little into there shells, and Villa made a great substitution, and managed to steal the win from under Swansea's noses.
How the votes were spread
3-2-2
Swansea 1-1 Aston Villa
Adebayor - Bent
Norwich vs West Ham
- Spoiler:
- West Ham came into this game under new management, the board deciding to dispense with the previous manager after declaring him ‘a massive man sausage’. That change led to a fast start for West Ham, Guttierez going round the outside of Tierney and crossing for Chamakh who headed wide. They didn’t have to wait long for a first goal however, Cork’s free kick headed in off the bar by Chamakh to give West Ham a novelty this season, a lead. The game deteriorated from there however and became a scrappy affair, both teams being cancelled out in midfield, and the only moment of note coming from Allen as he broke free of his shackles to drill a shot past the post.
Halftime must’ve come as a relief to the crowd, and the game improved immeasurably after it, Norwich getting a quickfire equaliser after the break, Holt heading down for Howson who bent it round Robinson from 12 yards. From then on it was end to end stuff, Pederson and Sturridge drawing saves from Ruddy, while Holt wasted 3 good chances at the other end. With the game reaching its close West Ham thought they’d won it, as Pederson low cross was tapped in by Sturridge with 5 minutes to go to give West Ham’s fans hope of a first win. However it wasn’t to be, as substitute Rhodes ran in behind Wheater and finished past Robinson to deny them in injury time.
Expert Opinion (Serena Williams’ Ass):
It was a scrappy affair of little quality in the first half, but it improved immeasurably in the second, both teams starting to advantage of width. West Ham will be disappointed not to win, but here was a performance, and point, to build on.
Norwich 2-2 West Ham
Howson ’49, Rhodes ‘90+1; Chamakh ’13, Sturridge ‘85

Well played Hero. I don't expect anyone to get much from Spurs this season, they've made themselves title favourites and hopefully when Stoke's fixtures calm down we can get some wins under our belt.

In fairness I think it'd have been a lot closer if you'd have had a full strength team out for the game, certainly think you'll ruffle a few feathers.

Others thought differently.
And realistically, in this realistic league, a strong Fulham side like that probably would draw at home to Chelsea.

Thought Fulham's strong midfield could match yours toe-to-toe personally Pull.
Saying that, I had you down as 0-1 winner, but it was close.

This is one thing that is concerning me about the league, people are predicting as if there is home & away when there isn't, and certainly not home advantage.

Re: Week 5 Results
surely that's what makes the league well realistic if there's home and away advantage otherwise the lesser teams would never take any points off the big boys of the league?
As Marky has put, they've been in the match report since week 1

Of course whether you are home/away plays a part, as this league is realistic. And I thought Fulham were well worth the draw tbh, so did the voters

But there are only 15 fixtures, and looking at it some teams get more home & away than others.

Its as Wenger said it, everybody thinks they have the best looking wife at home.
In any case I was told we don't count home/away first season by Trebs after week 1 and I still went for a draw.

Re: Week 5 Results
Not complaining, just curius as to why people opted to draws as from 1 to 11 my player is better than the opposition player (any disagreement?)
Seems like it was:
- Home advantage
- 'Realisitic' - Fulham got two draws against Chelsea in 11/12
Fair enough. I'll take the point and move onto next week in search of a W!

If you've out manned me in every position on the field, clearly I'm the better manager as I'm getting more out of lesser rated players. #justsaying
