The son of a rich Brazilian architect, Javiér Copas was encouraged to follow in his fathers footsteps. Afforded the finest education and home schooling, Javi became fluent in Spanish, English and Portuguese but his desire to follow in the footsteps of his father was non-existent. Javi left the family home at 15 to pursue a life for himself, looking to begin his own business helping under privileged children get a better education, however, without the backing of his father Javi soon found life tough and ended up running in with the wrong crowd, having to fight and fend for himself just to survive. He was saved by a local caretaker, who took Javi in and introduced him to the arts of Capoeira and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Javi took to it like a duck to water, excelling in his training, developing a great understanding with his teacher, eventually he put his skills into practice, earning money to survive by street fighting. Javi became a keen admirer of Renzo Grace and the Grace family. Studying the techniques and learning how they came to create the art of BJJ. As the years went by, Javi and his mentor would cross the city, looking for under privileged children to help. His mentor eventually succumbed to illness and passed away, leaving Javi to head into the world alone, a note left by his mentor revealed he was an relative of the Grace family and that they would be proud of what Javi had achieved. He changed his name as a mark of respect for his mentor and the family who created the art that helped him survive.
