Newcastle Falcons 53 - 10 Leeds
Another impressive performance from the boys who are really starting to put the performances in.
We seem to have a bit of steel in the pack aswell...helped by Carlo Del Fava.
Golding is looking good...Hodgson controlling things nicely at 10..(George Ford, Farrell who?) Gopperth has found his spot at 15...and Mark Wilson showed he is going to be a top back rower...
Tomaschk (spelling) has come in nicely at TH prop aswell...and looking strong...

Blimey! I expectd Leeds to be a challenge but that scoreline suggests a rout!
Must be nice to see Falcons attacking game actually getting used Geordiefalcon.
Still it does also highlight the gulf between championship teams and prem teams.

Yeah mate i think there is a gulf...but we are improving from the rubbish of the last few years...
Keep your eyes peeled for Joel Hodgson at 10....he's a talented lad and looks like deano has decided he is the starting 10 with Gopperth at 15 which is working nicely.
And we have some steel developing in the pack again...
Trips to the north east are returning to the old days of a horrible tough battle for teams again....

Pack was very impressive, we'd need recruitments to compete in the prem though.
Crockett was great, really gives is some guile at 13. His work for Gopperth try late on was top

I've seen some people say that the attendance was disappointing (4600) considering the ticket offer. I wonder why people stayed away? It wasn't too bad weather wise, the promotion seem good, yet they couldn't get above 5000.

Re: Newcastle Falcons - We're back!! Championship winners
Very sad performance from Carnegie especially after a sound performance away to Bristol. The reality is we aren't anywhere near contenders for play offs let alone promotion. I understand what Edwards is tasked to do but I'm not sure it's a one or two season project or if there's the coaching structure to achieve it.
Falcons are getting things right under new management and a year away in the Championship could be working well for you. There are sides who can put in the odd performance against you but no-one as far as I can see who look consistently good enough to challenge. My fear is that come the play offs there might be a couple of sides that have matured into half decent ones capable of those one off performances that usurp the team that's been best throughout.
Still, there's a way to go yet but you're looking the part for now.

I think playing on a Friday night is a problem. Its difficult for me to make every friday with work etc. I only just made it on Friday.

Fridays are a massive pain if you don't drive as the last south bound train to Hartlepool is 8pm and most KO are 8pm.
I usually get a lift through with some of the rugby lads or go up with Pooly but if none of them are going it's 99.99% that i will miss that game.

If that match is as good as the reverse fixture was you'll be in for a treat. Admittedly the weather is unlikely to turn on 30 degrees come December, but last month both teams threw the ball around, and there were plenty of driving mauls from the Falcons for those fond of forward power play.

Well, with a bit of luck the fixture wont fall foul of the seasonal North Eastern weather, as it has done in the past - usually when most of the supporters (home and away) have already left for the stadium...

I see Euan Murray has officially signed for Worcester.
Anyone think we'll miss him. At the moment Tomaschks form is not making us miss him at all...

Not at all GF, bit of relief getting him off the wage bill tbh.
He's not the same player he has been over the years. Would give us a good edge in the scrums but Tomas has a much higher work rate in the loose.

With the British Cup coming soon (not generally taken seriously)...and us involved...it will be interesting to see who Deano gives a run out to from the academy / Development group.
Scott Wilson surely will be involved at TH, and possibly James hallam at LH.
Both were hugely impressive against Gloucester on Monday night in the A league. Our propping coaches are earning their money at the moment.
Ben Morris who also had a blinder against Glos & big Joe Robinson in the back row...
Possibly Zach Kiribige on the wing?
Would you agree?

Re: Newcastle Falcons - We're back!! Championship winners
Yep, it's hard to see any other side challenging right now. As the season goes on Falcons are likely to benefit further from having a better squad to deal with inevitable injuries and the like. Bristol seem to have been badly affected by the last 2 years final outcomes and don't appear to have anything to offer early season. Carnegie still have a lot to do if they are to finish in the play offs and even more if they are to challenge for promotion. Have very mixed feelings about Diccon Edwards coaching but realise he's working under very tight restraints player wise.

Aitch, actually i think the difference is Deano and Russel are using the academy...which has always been a power tool the falcons have.
We have one of the best academys in britain so why not use it.
Good win yesterday...i say again we are the strongest team...but the playoffs need concentration...

Think they have a battle plan for the play offs GF. Seems to be a lot better with rest and rotation.
Mcleod played a blinder by all accounts yesterday. We have some serious selection head aches. Where is York at? is he injured?
See we signed Warren Fury as well to cover Pilgrims injury.

Re: Newcastle Falcons - We're back!! Championship winners
Yeah ive wondered where York is...he must be injured.
The headache has come because the talent is coming through and deano is using it...unlike Alan tait who just picked foreign journeymen...
I appreciate there is a gap from Prem to championship....but blooding the likes of Hodgson Catterick etc now means they will be ready for next season (if we manage to get promotion).
Hodgson in my eyes is as good as Ford at Leicester and could be a dark horse for international honours in years to come...
In fact there are several members of the squad now that could be knocking on the door in a year or two...

Yeah im really pleased to see the youngsters getting a run out. Scott is a serious prospect as is Zach.
I still think Mark Wilson is also a real talent and im glad he's got Deano looking after him.
Im still concerned about our hookers though. Surely we've got someone in the academy that can bring the power we're looking for...with a decent lineout throw. I was hopeing it was gonna be McGuirk...but he's not getting a huge amount of gametime.
I wanted to go tomorrow...but didnt realise it was still £40 a ticket for these development type games....

I'm glad that Falcons are persevering with Hodgeson at 10, moving him to 9 would have wasted his talent. Last season he really lit up the Falcons backline in the fleeting chances he was given. I think he could definitely be in the mix in a couple of seasons, this year in the Championship will be good for him as well. Not sure he has the tactical nous of Ford but he probably sneaks ahead in his attacking play as he gets his outside backs in the game very well.

I think Ford is a little overhyped but not seeing that comparison GF. Hodgson is ok at Champ level but nothing special behind a pretty dominant pack.

Newcastle Falcons began their British and Irish Cup campaign with a comprehensive victory over Cross Keys at Kingston Park.
Debutants Zach Kibirige and Scott Wilson had solid outings against the Welsh outfit as the Falcons made it seven wins out of seven this term.
Hot prospect Kibirige showed no signs of pre-match nerves in the early exchanges, skipping through the Cross Keys defensive line with ease following a sweeping attacking move involving Alex Tait and Suka Hufanga.
Kibirige was hauled down 10-metres from the line, but with five minutes on the clock Michael Tait touched down in the corner thanks to some nimble handwork from centres Hufanga and Jamie Helleur.
Marauding drives from forwards Mark Wilson and Will Welch set the platform, before the ball was flung wide to Michael Tait. Waisea Luveniyali, who took over the kicking duties from the rested Jimmy Gopperth failed to convert and the Falcons led 5-0.
Kibirige, who set the tone for the game with his trickery in attack, got his name on the score sheet on 12 minutes.
Fly-half Luveniyali was the architect, breaking through the Welsh rearguard to feed the Yarm School pupil, who left three Cross Keys defenders in his wake with a clean set of heels to sprint in under the posts. Luveniyali added the extras to put his side 12-0 in front.
It was soon 19-0 to the hosts when Taiasina Tu’ifua crashed over from close-range for a converted try, after the Falcons underlined their dominance at the scrum. Ushering the ball towards Cross Keys’ try line, the giant Samoan scooped up the ball to touchdown. Luveniyali made no mistake with the conversion to extend the Falcons’ advantage.
With half-time looming, the Kingston Park crowd witnessed the sorry sight of Cross Keys inside centre Luke Ford being stretchered off with a leg injury. That seemed to galvanise the Welsh outfit as they looked to carve a way through a steely Falcons defence. Full-back Gareth David showed penetration with ball in hand to scurry past his opposite number Alex Tait, but his neat offload was knocked-on by winger Elliot Jones.
On the stroke of half-time Richards’ men conjured up their fourth try of the game courtesy of skipper Will Welch. With the visitors enjoying a rare sight of the Falcons try line, the northeasterners turned defence into attack in a flash.
Jones’s knock-on was hacked deep down-field by Luveniyali with Kibirige giving chase to force Nathan Trowbridge to touch the ball down in goal. From the resulting scrum, Grant Shiells and Matt Thompson had strong carries to enable Welch to squeeze in at the corner.
Luveniyali fell just short with the conversion and the men from the north went into the break 24-0 ahead.
With barely five minutes on the clock in the second period Hufanga took anside pass five-metres from the line to cross in style. Luveniyali’s conversion made it 31-0.
Kibirige continue to terrorise Cross Keys’ defence, ghosting through a gap on 67 minutes to set-up an attacking opportunity. Alex Tait and Scott MacLeod were each thwarted by a scrambling rearguard just inches from the line.
Awarded a five-metre scrum, the Falcons again showed their supremacy at the scrum to earn a penalty try which Luveniyali converted for a 38-0 lead.
From the restart Cross Keys replacement Ryan James was given his marching orders for persistant infringement at the ruck. Hodgson kicked into the corner with the penalty and from the resulting lineout, Hodgson hit Helleur with a flat pass to unleash the Samoan to scoot in under the posts. Hodgson’s simple conversion made it 45-0.
On 75 minutes Kibirige was denied a double for the afternoon when he gathered a looping pass on the wing, before dashing in at the corner only to have been adjudged to have had his foot in touch.
But the Kingston Park troops would not be denied a minute later as replacement hooker Michael Mayhew bulldozed his way through to score. Hodgson nailed the conversion from bang in front of the posts to put his side 52-0 in front.
Coasting to victory, the Falcons will have been unhappy to have conceded a late try courtesy of Dorian Jones. Jones took advantage of a three man overlap to touchdown before failing to convert his own score. However it paled into insignificance as the Falcons ran out 52-5 victors.

Re: Newcastle Falcons - We're back!! Championship winners
Richards was impressed with the young lads too apparently:
http://www.newcastlefalcons.co.uk/news/story/teen-duo-impress-richards
http://www.newcastlefalcons.co.uk/news/story/teen-duo-impress-richards
Newcastle Falcons chief Dean Richards reserved praise for academy products Zach Kibirige and Scott Wilson after making their debuts in Saturday’s 52-5 victory over Cross Keys in the British and Irish Cup.
Kibirige, 17, and Wilson, 18, were handed their chance to impress the Falcons boss after a series of solid displays in the Aviva A League under the guidance of Mark Laycock and James Ponton.
And the duo’s performance was the highlight of the day according to Richards, who revealed it was a frustrating afternoon for his side despite running out comfortable winners over their Welsh counterparts.
“They were outstanding on the day and they did exceptionally well, and for me their performances were the most pleasing thing for me today,” said Richards.
Middlesbrough-born Kibirige wasted no time in introducing himself to the Falcons fans, as he underlined his blistering pace to cross the whitewash on 12 minutes.
“Every time he touched the ball he looked as though he was going to do something with it,” Richards said of the Yarm School pupil.
He added: “We have a lad who is 17-years-of-age and he won’t reach his prime until he’s 22 or 23. I think he’ll be an outstanding player.”
On a day when Richards blooded the teenage twosome, the experienced director of rugby admits that was the only real high-point of the day.
Bemoaning his side’s failure to control the game at times, Richards said: “It was a little bit frustrating to watch at times as we didn’t play as we wanted and went off plan.
“We got the points which we wanted, but they scored a soft try at the end which again disappointed us, so it’s a bit of a frustrating day.”
The Falcons continue their quest to lift the British and Irish Cup with a trip to Connacht next week, before hosting Rotherham Titans in the RFU Championship (kick-off 8pm).

Finally we have a guy in charge who appreciates the quality academy we have....and will use it.
We have another two potential gems on our hands with those two...and i have no doubts Deano (and Russel) will develop them exactly right slowly and surely.
The future is looking very promising.

Kibridge sounds like a real talent, hopefully he'll get some more game time.
Sounds like the scrum was strong too so Wilson must have played well, exciting times ahead!

Yeah if you look at just some of the academy players from the last year or two and current - Mark Wilson, Joel Hodgson, Joe Robinson, Scott Wilson, Kibirige...it shows that standard of talent that this academy can produce if used correctly.
Wilson is still very young...even younger for a TH prop so to speak...but he looks like he's a proper scrummaging prop in the mould of Mr Hayman etc...rather than these "great in the loose solid in the scrum" modern rubbish props....
We need a hooker though...a top class one.

Totally agree GF, Vickers is poor even at Champ level.

We need a hooker who can throw the ball in full stop , gutted we didn't go for Titterall , would complete our line out and maybe bring Vickers throw on.

Yeah Vickers throwing is appalling..and i just dont rate Thompson.
Mayhew has his moments but again not the answer.
See how young McGuirk comes on...and any other academy prospects further down.....otherwise we need to scout the planet and bring one in....a top class one...not a journeyman.
We could end up with a fearsome front row in a few years time....

Shiells could be a big player for us too and Tomas has looked like a world beater in short patches.
I've not seen Shiells take a pounding for a long time now.

Richards has rejected a job offer to coach the Baa Baas against England and Lions due to Falcons commitments!

I wouldnt want Doran Jones....think we have plenty of options in the front row...and coming through.
Nice to see Deano showing that kind of committment.
Maybe he knows he could have something good building here....

'A' League WORCESTER 13 FALCONS 30
Another good performance by the falcons in poor conditions.
Big Joe scored a try, and fellow academy back rower Ben Morris had another very impressive game scoring aswell. Chris York started at 8 aswel...Thats powerful back row.
Yet another academy prospect LH prop James Hallam continued his impressive form.
Great to see the youngsters getting games and really making their mark aswell.

Plenty of quality coming through it seems , Be some tussle between Tomak and Wilson for the 3 jersey over the next few years.

Absolutely...
LH's Golding, Hallam, Shiels - Thats some competition brewing aswell.
TH's - Tomas v Scotty - This could be a huge battle. Tomas has really surprised me by the level of his performances (Euan who?)...and Scott just looks set to go right to the top...another Carl Hayman
Hall has also been playing well at TH for the development side aswell.
i also think its quite frightening what we have produced or are producing in the back row (academy players).
Ben Morris has been putting some blindingly good performances in the 'A'league as has Joe Robinson - hes just a monster.
Mark Wilson is already established in the 1st XV and getting better and better
Will Welch - Captain...classy 7

Sounds like the drop could be a blessing in disguise.
When do Newcastle take on Bedford? They will likely be your toughest test.

Shame no 2nd rows in the Newcastle academy pipeline.
Very interesting. I might even pop along for that one.
