India not finding not enough boundaries, remember their batting lineup will have to score 10-15 more than other side have to do with their bowling. Now Gambhir gone.

Finn gets Gambhir which might just help India - he was beginning to look tired.

Its the captain, I hope the old version would be out there, not much time to get settled, he'll have to go on the attack right away.

there is a lot of skill / innovation required to find boundaries from here....or a lot of brute power...else it's not easy to get value from simply well timed strokes alone

First really good over for India for a while. They'll need more of those.
Brilliant from Bairstow to save a run though.

Mike Selig wrote:Would have had Dhoni in next - he likes to play himself in a bit before going for the bowling, so giving him 9 overs would have been perfect. Of course Sharma will now smash the ball to all parts.
England have almost certainly got the Bresnan over Patel call wrong.
It was an odd call regardless of their theories about slow bouncers, 4 right arm seamers (only one of which is genuinely fast) in a side and only one slow bowler is horribly unbalanced. It really goes against their usual thinking too. Given Bresnans been in rank form too ....
It cant be the only reason they are struggling a bit (like India are playing well in conditions that suit them) but its the obvious mistake to pick up on for sure. Briggs may even have
bought the wickets, Patel wouldve given a controlling option and made the Indians think a bit more. As it is they are comfortable going easy on Swann and creaming the quicks.
I dont think England have the batting to make 180 against any side, the plus is that Indias bowling is poor so if they can keep this from getting out of control they are still in the game. Lets not forget the last 50 over world cup....

Last couple of overs coming up, India 143-3. Will they make it to 170? Not easy.

It's been very much a mixed bag from England in the field. A few good saves and good pieces of athleticism but a few basic errors. There's another, good throw to the keeper would have had Dhoni.

10 of the 19th. 170 looking more dificult. Seems like it is not easy to hit the big shots as the ball isn't coming on that well, but with the average bowling unit, I feel 160 won't be enough.

Crucial last over this. Anything less than 12 and England will feel they've done well. Anything more than 15 gives India good momentum going in.

There you are, back of a length slower balls give a single and a wicket (curtesy of some brilliant fielding).

Dhoni gone with 2 balls to go, but an expensive over nevertheless from Dernbach. India 166-4.

they should be bowling 6 slower balls with various variants of leg and off cutters

Re: T20 World Cup: Live Matches Discussion
Can only think Dernbach wants to practice his yorkers for later on in the tournament. On this evidence probably a good idea.
Big last over for India, getting to the 170. I suspect we'll only know how good that actually is when England have done their batting, but England will be disappointed with their effort in the field. Should have restricted India to under 160.

17 off the last over...and India did maximize....due to controlled agression from Rohit and Dhoni...and some not very clever bowling by Eng.
India should beleieve they do not need 7 batsmen...especially given that Pathan, Ashwin Bhajji and Chawla are all handy batsmen

Re: T20 World Cup: Live Matches Discussion
India ends up with 170, a poor over from Dernbach at the end with all those wides and low full toss. India have 3 spinners in their ranks, Yuvraj, Harbhajan and Chawla, and Dhoni can also call up Raina and Rohit Sharma as well for a few overs. England will have to bat well to win this, I would say 50-50 at this stage.

Re: T20 World Cup: Live Matches Discussion
Slow pitch so India will be delighted to make 170 despite only getting 1 six. England just didn't take enough wickets at key moments and the fielding was loose at times. Still, I feel England can chase 171.

Re: T20 World Cup: Live Matches Discussion
Dernbach rarely puts in a consistent run of good performances. He is capable of bowling well in this form but my general sense is that his bowling performances will typically come out at around: good 25%, OK 25%, fairly poor 25%, very poor 25%. Not sure that is good enough....

Re: T20 World Cup: Live Matches Discussion
I would go 55-45 India because they've got the runs on the board. It is easier making 60 off 5 at the end batting first (although India "only" made 55). I don't think the pitch is as slow as some are making out, the seamers are coming onto the bat fine. If India had Ashwin I wouldn't fancy England much, but Chawla has a tendancy to bowl the slider which is probably the easiest ball to hit on this pitch. Harbajhan will fire it in also. I think Yuvraj may be more than useful though.

Dernbache is such a liability. He has pathetic overs far too often. Is there no alternative? Handed India the game in that over.

Re: T20 World Cup: Live Matches Discussion
Can I have a go about over rates again? It should be an hour and twenty minutes for 20 overs, not an hour and 40! The whole point of T20 is the game happens fast and you have less time - if you keep allowing sides to spend as long as they like in the field part of that challenge is gone, and the game is less skilful.

Yuvraj misses a very makeable run-out. Pathan's hit a good length so far, just short of driveable.

Kieswetter and Wright both struggle to rotate the strike. Something Gambhir, Kohli and even Pathan did very well for India.

England are seemingly desperate to do everything differently than what they have done so successfully recently. Pressure or a conscious effort to try a few things in a dead rubber? I would say pressure...

9 of that Pathan over, England 39-2. They are pulling off the big shots, but not enough singles.

Re: T20 World Cup: Live Matches Discussion
I agree msp, I think 3 overs on the bounce is rarely a good idea in T20.
Sure enough Kieswetter helps himself to a couple of boundaries.
Crucial stage now, spin into the attack.
