Sports Personality Of The Year - Andy Murray ?
First topic message reminder :
Will Murray win it?
If not then why not?

Andy Murray - 4/1
Mo Farah - 11/2
Jessica Ennis - 12/1
David Weir - 28/1
Ellie Simmonds - 80/1
Rory McIlroy - 100/1
Chris Hoy - 100/1
Lewis Hamilton - 175/1

Sarah Storey - 250/1
Jason Kenny - 250/1
Greg Rutherford - 250/1

I would have McIlRoy ahead of Ennis for achievement.

Eric - most of your points are way too logical for SPOTY, but Muzza blubbing in front of the crowd on CC at Wimbledon and coming back to beat TMF at the Olympics within a month will be huge for his chances I think. Like I said, I think between him and Wiggo it will be v. close.

AP McCoy won it despite being mostly unknown in the UK.
It would be a bit sad seeing Ennis out of the top 3 when she came 3rd in 2010 without an Olympic title.

The pressure on Ennis to win was extraordinary; more so than on anyone else I'd say.
She was the poster-girl for the Olympics.
She had one event and one chance this summer - all the others had at least two bites at the cherry - and she succeeded in an event where there are 7 opportunities to screw it up coming at you in quick succession each presenting very different challenges technically and mentally.
She's also a damn sight easier on the eye than all the others too.

McIlroy can be a field killer one week then an absolute amateur the next week, Ennis is always 1st or 2nd.Nore Staat wrote:I would have McIlRoy ahead of Ennis for achievement.

Nature of the sport though. The differences between a poor week in golf and a similarly poor heptathlon is that you miss the cut in a golf event or a gold medal favourite in the heptathlon only wins silver. Massively different levels of achievement for very similar drops in form.

erictheblueuk wrote:If I were a betting man I'd say get your money on Murray, for the following reasons;-
1:- He reached the AO SF losing to Novak a better player than him.
2:- He reached the Wimby final losing to Federer a better player than him. Also his tearful speech afterwards won him so many fans. He said in an interview that the support for him after Wimby was so staggering. It lifted him out of his depression and helped get him ready for the olympics. I think this support will translate into votes.
3:- He won Olympic singles Gold beating Federer and Novak in the process. Who were not only ranked above him but one is the current holder of the overseas SPOTY award and the other a multiple past winner.
4:- He also won a Silver Medal in the Olympic mixed event. I realy think this helped Robson to move on and help get good her results at USO 2012.
5:- He won a GS at USO 2012 of cousre again beating Novak a player better than himself.
6:- He still has 2 masters events and the End of year WTF to play. Which will keep him in the public eye especially if he does well in them.
7:- I think almost the whole of Scotland will vote for him. Like they did for Hoy in 2008 when Hamilton was favourite for winning the F1 title.
8:- Wiggo, Farah, Ennis, Weir were favourites for their events. Given the level of Murrays opposition he was not the favourite for his events.
I am now fairly confident that if you choose to vote for Sports Personality of the year you will cast YOUR vote for Murray. I'm not sure the rest of the British public will be using the same criteria when deciding to vote. They will be using criteria such as this to make up their mind.

Farah has gold medals, won in style, high profile friends and a cute smile. How could people not vote for him?

Quite easily.
Just not cast a vote for him.

Perhaps because they want to vote for someone else?

Farah has done more for charity than Andy has.

I suppose it depends who these high profile friends are. For example if they are Robert Mugabe, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, George W Bush, Tony Blair, Osama bin Beelzebub .... I am not sure people would automatically vote for himhawkeye wrote: ... has ... high profile friends ... How could people not vote for him?

Andy does his bit but the Mo Farah foundation is truly impressive.

No he hasn't!
Andy has given 3 Slams away. Can't be anymore charitable than that

Re: Sports Personality Of The Year - Andy Murray ?
With regard to charity work that is not really relevant to Sports Personality of the Year. It's only relevant when Liz with Dave decide what to award Mo Farah in the New Year: Arise Sir Mo Farah of Mobotshire.

Mo Farah will win. He doesn't need any votes from the tennis section of 606v2 in order to do so.

I think you're underestimating the influence of 606v2. For example if it wasn't for you, Nadal would not be an 11 times multi-slam champion.hawkeye wrote:Mo Farah will win. He doesn't need any votes from the tennis section of 606v2 in order to do so.

Really? In that case do you think 606v2 could do anything about his knees?

I'd also vote for Mo but I feel Murray will win for any combination of the reasons I've listed.

It's crazy if it oes to anyone but Wiggins. Incredible to win the TDF and then he picked up some Gold.

Re: Sports Personality Of The Year - Andy Murray ?
Pendleton ahead of Trott doesn't make sense. I'm a big fan of Pendleton but she "only" won one of her three events, Trott won both of hers (and part of a trio who smashed the WR several times).
Much as I admired Tom Daley for battling to his bronze, does he really deserve to be on there ahead of Charlotte Dujardin for instance?
Otherwise, if the top 3 are in that order I'll be perfectly happy
