Nevin Spence - Book of Condolence
A Book of Condolence for the Spence family will be opened by the Official Leinster Supporters Club at the RDS on Saturday, 22 September in advance of Leinster's PRO12 fixture against Edinburgh. The Book will be sited in the Main Hall of the RDS adjacent to where the season ticket holder packs are being distributed. Supporters are asked to enter the Hall through Gate D.
The Book will be closed at 6pm to allow supporters and Leinster Rugby staff attend and pay tribute to Nevin, his brother Graham and father Noel during the minute's silence. It will then be re-opened post match in The Laighin Out.
For those who cannot attend the match on Saturday, a Book of Condolence will also be opened in the Leinster Store in Donnybrook from 11am on Tuesday, 18 September and will remain there until Saturday at noon.
Leinster squad news
Hooker Richardt Strauss suffered a head knock midway through the second half of Saturday night’s 19-18 victory over Benetton Treviso and he is doubtful for the weekend.
Saturday’s victory saw the successful return of Ireland internationals Kev McLaughlin, Mike Ross, Cian Healy, Jamie Heaslip, Brian O’Driscoll, Eoin Reddan and out-half Jonathan Sexton who scored a match-winning last minute drop goal in Italy.
With Monday’s field training session cancelled as a mark of respect for the late Nevin Spence, the panel will train on Tuesday morning and could be bolstered by the return of Gordon D’Arcy and European Player of the Year Rob Kearney who are both in contention for selection ahead of Friday’s lunchtime team announcement.

He is well known for his geekness when it comes to the scrum.
Quiet bloke. but he has a book on all the props in Europe and how to get the better of them in the scrum.
We are not packing much weight in the 2nd row though. Denton and Cullen are more mobile players. Roux has a knock. Toner is on the bench and Browne? not sure.
I reckon we should have enough for you at home in the RDS and we should be targeting a BP win, to get further up the table.

I'm pleased to see Edinburgh rest key Scotland players, hopefully Ford will get a rest in coming weeks. But I do query resting two of our best players against the reigning HC Champions, especially considering we played Zebre last week?
Surely Grant and Brown would have done more than enough last week against the newly formed Italian team so we could have played our 1st choice XV against Leinster, would be a huge confidence boost if we turn them over away.
How long is Denton out for?
Strong Leinster team, our pack will have to play very well to get on top. We could really do with both Rennie and Visser, I'd be far more confident with them in the side.

Agree with the majority here re: Healy and Ross. Healy is serious quality and could go on to become Ireland's most capped at the rate he is going. Rarely gets injured for long periods too (touches all wood in vicinity) and plays games at such a fierce pace that he is very hard to leave out of the team. When was his first Irish cap?
Ross is a bit of a donkey and not a highly effective one but his ball handling and awareness has gotten better and he is a fairly good scrummager.

Healy is fast becoming the best dynamic, LH on the Planet. He has never looked back from the man-shaming he took in Toulouse 2 seasons back. His scrummaging has vastly improved. The lad will be a 1st-choice Lion. Ross is solid and is key to us. Want to see Hagan trusted more this season. He´s a beast.
That´s a strong Leinster 23. I´d expect a TBP, tbh. No point in spouting false modesty, like the coaches. Just hope its a good open game - as are these two teams natural wont. Cant believe Tim McVisser is not playing. Love watching him run them in.

Madigan to FB Isa to either wing. Darce hasn't played wing in about 8 years.pete (buachaill on eirne) wrote:

Looking forward to seeing Denton play. Haven´t seen him yet. Any thoughts/knowledge on him lads?

Denton has a thigh strain so nothing too serious. He played against Cardiff and Munster and was his usual arms and legs everywhere self!
Reallybored- that's a good point about last week, we were playing the feckin Zebras at home - surely that was the time to rest Visser and Rennie??
There's a fine line between player management and molly-cuddling them and I can't help but think our Scotland players are too far the other way.
I do hope our top players are going into the Saracans game having at least played the 2 games leading up to it. Got to be battle hardened for that game!

So we drop Visser (international capped, playing well and most likely gonna be in the Scotland team) and replace him with Brown (international capped, playing well and most likely gonna be in the Scotland team).
We drop Rennie (international capped, playing well and most likely gonna be in the scotland team) and replace him with Grant ( A capped, sevens capped and probably would have been fully capped if we didn't have so many good back row players and is one of the most experienced edinburgh players in the squad)
We bring in leonard and Hislop who had a good summer with the U20's
and Dougie Fife who most folk where calling for game time anyway.
If that's supposed to be a weakened team then this season already looks good.

We cant depend on visser all the time someone in the backs need to put there hand up and start scoring aswell (hopefully Jones), I actually prefer Grant over Rennie, not saying Rennie isn't good but I like Grants work rate around the field.

Just think some of the players are getting into the game plan of (QUICK GET THE BALL TO VISSER!!) far to often, would like the forwards to start taken the ball more often we just seem to go out wide to soon without making the hard yards.

Fair enough.
I'd still prefer that they did that, plus still have Visser playing!
My pet hate is the stupid offloads that they do when there is absolutely no need for an offload - just like Scotland do. Off loads are great if they hit the gainline hard and offload to someone coming at pace, but we do stupid off loads when we've ambled into contact and the person supporting them is standing still.
The worst one was Talei against the Blues where, with a minute to go and 1 point in the lead, he makes a great run up the middle but instead of holding onto the ball he did a stupid offload which was knocked on.
The quicker Scottish rugby players learn when to offload and when not to the better!

If you train too hard to offload, to get good at it, because it can be very handy; ... it can sometimes mean you get into the offload habit - yes.
But then, the guy chooses not to do it, gets caught in isolation, gets pinged for holding on and well................. we all knows he's going to get a load of it on these pages. "Why didn't the ***&&^%$&! offload?!!!"
Damned if you do, damned if you don't

Same, really starting to hate it now, spent most of the games shouting for the players to look where there passing, everybody in the team now thinks there SBW. Cox has a nice offload tho he seems to turn into the tackle see the player and then pass, maybe he should take a training day with the team. Have noticed this season a few teams are trying it more often to keep the ball alive but so far with very little success, so many knock-ons considering the weather is still decent dread to think what its gonna be like when the ball is like a bar of soap in the rain.

Strong Leinster team. Could be a big win. That their hitherto shaky defence won't have Visser to worry about will be a big positive for them.

How have the starting wingers being playing? Don't know much about Conway but Carr, Jones and Brown are all fairly similar in that they aren't overly big but are fairly rapid and got a good step.

Not great TBH, RDW. Conway was and still is, expected to have a big future with us. He´s big and muscular, he´s lightening fast, good defender - but he really has not taken his chance over the last 3 games. Carr? Anyone want a speedy winger? He´s not a 1st squad Leinster player. And when D Kearney and Fitz come back - will be pushed out of the squad. He will be gone by next Summer, is my bet. Should have stayed at Connacht, where he was on fire and valuable to them.
Conway really has to start showing his promise tomorrow. He has no excuse, now he is surrounded by the Big Boys to feed off. I expect him to do it.

I agree with all of that
Carr has been something of a disappointment. He went through a good spell midway through last year where he was running back kicks really well. He could be good but he appears to have fallen short of the hurdle too many times. He needs to up it hugely before some of the other lads get back. Kearney and McFadden could both be taking his place in the team. Hudson can't be a million miles behind him.
I think most Leinster supporters would say that from Carr's perspective, quality training at Leinster aside, he should have stayed at Connacht.
Conway has always had oodles of potential, he just has to start realising even part of it soon.

To be honest, Id love to see Carr surprise us all. I'm just not sure he has it. But Id love him to prove me wrong. He will also benefit greatly from the experience around him. But he must use what surely is his last chance for a while. The coaches have told him this in no uncertain terms. It's The Leinster Way. But he seems like a really sincere guy. Loved how he praised Visser. And mentioned the Spences. He knew Nevin well from the Wolfhounds. Respect.

Maybe Fionn will break loose at the RDS tomorrow night. Conway too.

I thought he should have been in the 6N squad last year but that was well off the mark/ I hope he proves us wrong but if it doesn't happen this year he should move out of Leinster for his own sake, the guy is 27!

This Glasgow Connacht game is a little difficult to keep track of. Very similar blue, greyblue, white ensembles on both - when they merge they certainly merge.
