James Butler
I was you tubing the other day and came across this story about James Butler (Ex Pro Boxer) I must admit I had never heard of the guy but jesus he was a real life nutter and the story about him is one of the worse I have ever read about a pro boxer to say the least.
Butler was a very promising young fighter from New York City, known by the nickname “Harlem Hammer”. In November 2001, James Butler fought Richard “The Alien” Grant. The bout was a charity event to benefit survivors of the September 11 attacks. After losing by unanimous decision Butler made his way to the middle of the ring to purportedly congratulate Grant. Grant reacted by stretching his hand out in a motion to embrace. Instead, Butler (who had already removed his gloves) threw a vicious haymaker to Grant’s face. Richard Grant suffered numerous facial injuries including a broken jaw, lacerated tongue and several stitches. Butler, in turn, was arrested and convicted of assault, and served prison time for the attack.
Unfortunately, the tale does not end there. James Butler continued his career after this incident, but could never duplicate his earlier success. In October of 2004, Butler was arrested and charged with murdering Sam Kellerman, brother of HBO Boxing analyst Max Kellerman, with (ironically) a hammer, and setting his body on fire after a dispute. Butler pled guilty in 2006, and was sentenced to 29 years in prison.
sorry If this has already been discussed.

Re: James Butler
according to box rec (apologies) James butler fought 27 months after the incident where he walloped Richard Grant, 27 frikken months! IMO the guy should of been banned for life and license stripped indefinite , this story along with others AND people getting caught juicing just shows how soft the rules and regs of boxing today really are, we need change ASAP........Enter the Emore

Never heard of this guy, or this story, so thanks for this mate. You'd think Kellerman would have a serious vendetta against any boxer with dubious previous. He seems pretty well adjusted when shady characters are on Face Off, even impartial/objective, considering his brother was brutely murdered by a boxer with an unsavoury history.
For me, a two year ban for a violent act in the ring is about right (maybe followed by a pyschological test?).
I don't see it as any different to the violent conduct of footballers (Barton, for example)..... except that, when a boxer punches someone the consequences are a bit more serious than when a footballer does it!
The intention is the same though.

I heard about this a while ago on KOTV, absolutely disgusting that he was allowed to box again. I don't think Grant ever recovered properly from that either.

Jesus, what an absolute maniac. That poor boxer was in serious trouble after that. And murder! Guys clearly a psychopath, and although I consider myself a decent person, it's really hard not to wish severe suffering on Grant after seeing that. The reaction of the commentary team says it all.

The emore is here man!
This is seriously disturbing, and sadly, another example of how lackluster the governing bodies can be.
When a man does that to another it only highlights the lack of humanity that can be found in this world. Why on earth would you let a man like that walk the streets, let alone box again?
