Tactics

We will look to play a fast paced attacking game using big carriers running of the 9/10 axis to get us over the gain line and generate quick ball. Keeping the ball alive is crucial so our carriers will be looking for support runners to hit on the offload and get us further over the gain line. Our back three will look to get involved as much as possible running support lines of the halfbacks and midfield looking for the inside ball or offload. If for whatever reason we aren’t getting quick ball, we will look to take control of territory with the boots of Spencer & Hook and force opposition to come at us from deep.

  • With a powerful front 5 on show we will look to keep the scrum up and use it as a weapon. On our own feed we will look to get the wheel on and give our 8-9-10 axis as much room as possible to attack from.
  • In opposition territory, with 5 jumping options to use, we will look to play off the top and move the ball out to Hook and the backs. In our own territory, we will look to take the ball down into the maul and drive ourselves into the right areas.
  • We will play an aggressive blitz on defence, playing on the edge of the offside line and coming up at pace, looking to isolate the ball carrier and stop any opposition momentum before it can get going.
  • Spencer will act as a sweeper and cover any chips or grubbers behind the defensive line.
  • We will leave two players sitting deep to cover any kicks and they will look to counter attack of any loose ball.
  • With the blitz in operation, we will look to be at the breakdown first hitting it hard and fast. If the ball looks available we will flood the breakdown with Kvesic & Todd looking to get their hands on the ball.
  • If the ball is not immediately available we will only commit 1 or 2 players to legally slow the ball down and instead look to strengthen the defensive line.

We will look to recycle the ball by getting good numbers to the breakdown, with the first few players rucking past the ball to clear out the Dragons players, allowing Blair to get quick, clean ball for us to attack the space on offer.

Line speed and aggression is key for us in defence, we will try and prevent Dragons from having time on the ball by having quick line speed and tackling their carriers before they reach the gain line, knocking them back and forcing them into mistakes, where we can exert pressure and try and get turnovers.

Myler will look to kick in behind their wingers put us deep into their territory where we will look to really pressurize and go after their lineout.

Wentzel will be our main go to man, we will also look to use Mafi and Wilson at the tail of the lineout where we can launch attacks from and get our big centers running at the Dragons fly half, whom our back row will look to be in the face of all game.

With the ball in hand, we will look to punch holes in the Dragons defensive line and get the ball to our back three. Barritt will look to take the contact and give us line breaking options with Pisi running good outside lines, we will attack gaps and half gaps in the Dragons defensive line.

Tactics

Basic tactical premise for us to control possession and be solid defensively. Focus will be on winning the gainline collisons in both attack and defence. In order to do this we have picked a very big pack to try to physically dominate this area of the game. We will look to apply pressure to Stade by keeping the ball for long periods and wearing them down defensively, and also by maintaining a solid defence and denying them opportunities to get on the score board. Pressure forces mistakes, and we will look to capitalise on any that Stade make.

We will be playing our usual offloading agme with blitz defence. If the weather is bad we will tighten up on the offloading and make sure that we are playing in the right areas of the pitch using the boots of Lambie and Henson.

Bordeaux 9 - 27 Sale

Saw Bordeuax play last year and wont be a threat for Sale at all.

Bizkaia 3 - 43 Worcester

Too much quality and a big away win for Warriors.

Wasps 25 - 19 Dragons

Good consistency in Wasps selection and will beat a good Dragons team.

Wolves 5 - 48 Bath

Easy away win, some good try scorers for Bath and pack will dominate.

Welsh 19 - 15 Stade

Away game could be trickier, but not impressed with Stade overall this season (again) and Welsh will have too much at home, despite changing some of the players around.

Begles 22 - 30 Sale

Plenty here for Sale, they are stronger all over but won't run away with it.

Gernika 12 - 57 Worcester

Big win for Worcester. Trip cuts the size of the score a little but routine really.

Wasps 34 - 24 Newport-Gwent Dragons

Wasps have too much at home across the park. Backrows a good contest but think Wasps will get a 5 pointer here.

Wolves 15 - 48 Bath

Should be easy enough for Bath to win this one. Routine win with a good side out.

London Welsh 22 - 20 Stade Francais

Very tough game this one. Welsh are winners in the end but with a few of Stade's benchmen starting and it could be a different stort. Pete faces a tough trip to Paris at some point.

Bordeaux 10-24 Sale
Too much strength in the outside backs for Sale with Hook playing an open game.

Wasps 21-12 Dragons
Can't see this being a high scoring match and Dragons are no jokers in back row. Think the Wasps tight 5 will see them home.

Wolves 5-48 Bath
Easy win here with Bath stronger all over, Their bench will take a lot here and see them run clear.

Welsh 20-16 Stade
Tightest game here! Stade aren't firing on all cylinders at the moment. Great scrummaging pack from Welsh and their backline will seal the deal here. Stade won't roll over easily but a French team away will see a good win for Welsh.

Gernika 9-49 Warriors
Too much quality throughout

Wasps 23-20 Newport
Dragons will make the backrow battle a real scrap but at home and the stronger backline on show Wasps take the win.

Wolves 5-42 Bath
Too much quality throughout

Welsh 28-25 Stade
Stade have been fairly inconsistent (following the trend of recent seasons!) and Welsh have enough about them to beat the frenchies.

Bordeaux 11-35 Sale
Bordeaux just not good enough all over the park

Gernika 3-51 Worcester
No idea any of the Gernika team. Any Worcester team would be too strong.

Wasps 27-23 Newport
Solid backrow from Newport but Wasps are better throughout most of the field.

Welsh 27-23 Stade
Stade not the team tgey ibce were

Bordeaux-Begles 19 Sale Sharks 23

Bordeaux have a big tough pack and will be difficult to beat at home, but enough quality through the Sale side to go there and get a win though.

Bizkaia Gernika RT 3 Worcester Warriors 55

Not even a game really. Easy win.

London Wasps 26 Newport Gwent Dragons 18

This would be a far tougher ask for Wasps at Rodney Parade where the Dragons are like a different side. At home though I would expect this to be a comfortable win for Wasps.

Bucharest Wolves 6 Bath Rugby 52

As per the Gernika vs. Worcester game!
