It's the Start of a New Era In Wrestling......Oh Wait
Just been thinking about Goldberg's WCW title win over Hollywood Hulk Hogan way back when (Sting's the previous year too) and how they felt like a really big deal in wrestling, that a new era had begun.
In truth though, they were nothing of the sort and the status quo was pretty much maintained.
Can you think of any other instances where you thought to yourself "This is huge! Everything's going to be different now!" only for it to turn out to be a damp squib?

Austin and Rock retired from WWE... it has to be different! And then it has barely changed in about seven years.

I would probably say when Kennedy won MITB at Wrestlemania 23 and that coienciding with a push for MVP I did think that the WWE had a shot at putting new talent in the Main Event. Sadily it never happened.

Hate to say it, but when Miz won the Championship. I thought we'd see alot more similar mid-carders being pushed onto the main event scene also - especially the ones who are more talented than the current pillock with the belt.

The angle with Vince's son being revealed....
Kennedy was on the way to a monster push and a guaranteed career in the WWE with multiple titles...it was an exciting and fresh angle...about to change the WWE landscape...
Then bam, Kennedy F'ed up and Hornswoggle was the best they could come up with. Wow.

The WWF buying WCW is another one of course. Wonder how things would have played out if they'd signed all the main men at the same time?

The 'revival' of ECW with Paul Heyman behind it, only for it to be WWE brand 3.

I'd wager that the GM storyline will also fall under this category!

Recently you could site many.... I like Gaffers HBK at Mania 12... That was meant to be the dawning of a new era but within 8 months the title was back on Bret Hart

Brady I would argue HBK at WM12 did usher in a new era for the following reason. Although Bret had the title back in Feb 1997 (nearly a year), thinking off the top of my head only 2 guys who were champions before HBK won the title again after WM 12 (Hitman and Undertaker). In the 2 or 3 years after this we had many new champs like Sid, HHH, Rock, Austin, Mankind, Vince , Kane (ok like Vince another poor example). Still I think this shows in the years immediately after HBK's first reign we only had 2 guys winning the title who had previously won it before HBK, to me that's a bit of a landmark.

Warrior's title win @ wm6. Didn't work for many reasons which was a shame cos it should have.

Daniel Bryan being reinstated in the WWE - I thought he was going to get a huge push and that we would see a shift towards more ROH like smaller competitors in the main event.

Re: It's the Start of a New Era In Wrestling......Oh Wait
You could look at it like that animal but the fact that there were so many new champs afterwards was really due to the fact the business was changing due largely to the pressure from wcw & the pursuit of tv ratings.. Title changes were becoming more frequenty & plus the loss of establish stars Hart & Michaels meant apart from the Taker there were no established stars left to put the belt on.... Simply fact was HBK was WWF's big hope to help win back the audience from WCW truth is he flopped as champ & they had to go back to Hart
Warriors win at 6 is a great shout... Who'd of guessed that night he'd end up dropping the title to Sgt Slaughter!!
