606v2 Tiger Woods Fan Club
I know there are a lot of TW fans here, and so I have undertaken to set up a fan club dedicated to the great man! Its still in the embryonic stages but the plan at the moment is to have a monthly newsletter via a blog on the golf board. This will consist of chat, quizzes, Tiger trivia, quotations and any other such items that will allow us to share our appreciation of history's greatest athlete.
How do you join? Well simply post on the blog, the more the merrier!
This month's Eldrick's corner question is: what is your favourite Tiger Woods moment? (if there are too many then list your top 5 or 10)
* NO HATERS, if you are not a fan then stay off the thread. Have a nice day.

Theres so many to choose from! My favourite is the clutch putt at Torrey pines, absolute magic. Watching clips of it still gives me goosebumps.
Also, welcome to the club barragan!

Re: 606v2 Tiger Woods Fan Club
Nothing wrong with having the thread... but as a sticky???
For the record, I'm not a fan but I do recognise that he has certainly had some iconic moments.
The total dominance at PB in 2000
The chip on 16 at Augusta,
The flop shot at Memorial this year,
The clutch putt at Torrey where he went on to win with a stress fracture in his leg.
Dodging the 5 iron aimed at his skull by his ex
All gripping stuff
But come on, all the greats have their moments, Nicklaus, Seve, Mickelson, etc all have a collection of similar moments (well maybe not the last one). If you had a sticky for each great player, normal threads would be pushed onto a 2nd page.

I just want to alert members of other boards. Tiger transcends his sport so there may be cricket fans etc who would be interested in joining but rarely venture on to the golf board.

My second favourite Tiger moment is probably his infamous 18th hole bunker shot at glen abbey. Pure class.

Tiger - Like Nicklaus, Player, Watson, Seve, Faldo (and soon to put Rory into that group, IMO) simply knows how to win. His best days may be behind him, but his winning percentage for tournaments entered, cuts made, time in the #1 spot are incredible achievements.
Best moment? IMO, Torrey Pines putt to force a playoff.

220 yards, from sand, all carry over water, tournament on the line.
Most players would be considered insane to even consider taking on that shot.
Not Woods.

For me his Open win at Hoylake, best display of ball striking I've ever seen, get to love those 2 iron stingers from the tee, majestic!

Hank haney would agree with you goldwolf, for the distance he was from the hole for his second shots it must rank as the greatest ball striking display in history. The highlight of which was a holed 4 iron one of the days. Were you there to witness it goldie? If so i'm jealous!

I'll agree with the iron from the bunker at Glen Abbey to win the Canadian Open, fabulous shot.
But his fairway wood from the 18th fairway in Round 3 of the 2010 Pebble Beach US Open was pretty special - except he missed the eagle putt, which he surely wouldn't have done in the days before his career went in Cadillac reverse.

His Win at the 2008 US Open at Torrey Pines on what was essentially one leg. Surely one of the greatest sporting achievements of all time?

Anyone played the Grove (where he won a WGC in 2006). There are 3 plaques in the middle of the 9th Fairway (it may have been the 18th in 2006) and they're not that far apart... where he hit his 2nd shots from on consecutive days to eagle the 579 yard hole each time.

Even more extraordinary when you read the behind the scenes accounts. He could barely practice in the run-up, was in agonising pain and couldnt take painkillers cos theyd diminish his touch round the greens! The accounts of his physios attempts to manage swelling in his knee and somehow prepare him for each day are astonishing. Not to mention the adversity he faced on the course, but he got through it with sheer determination, inspirational.Seve_The_Great wrote:His Win at the 2008 US Open at Torrey Pines on what was essentially one leg. I remember somebody having a pop at him because they thought he was feigning injury and being a drama queen...it sounds like a Sabbatini type thing to do but if I remember right I think it may have been the Goose.

We all know I am a big Tiger fan but even I don't believe he won the 2008 US open on one leg. He is not actually a super human, give anyone the same injury and they would have been able to complete four rounds of golf.
Best moment - Too many to pick just one, but if I can have the way he won the US open at pebble in 2000 I will go for that.
The best shot, but not necessarily the best moment, is probably the shot out the bunker and over the water at the canadian open.

Come on incontinentia,
In the fifties guys used to limp off before half-time, have a slug or two of Scotch while the boys were sucking on lemons, and going out and giving 'em hell in the second half. Just ask Eddie Clamp (a good name for him as it happens!).
He may have walked 91 holes with a buggered up leg, but he certainly wouldn't put his face out in public for months while he was indulging in his sex therapy.
Never prepared to believe all his so-called medical problems - just as likely to have played on a broken leg as he is to have taken steroids and have had his blood spun in my book. Which, of course, is not to discount either.

I imagine somewhere in his deluded mental status - brought on by his abusive father - the 2008 US open acted as his tour of duty. Wounded soldier battling on, and all that stuff.

Ever considered his injury wasn't that bad or sounded more serious than it was? He was only walking and playing a few golf shots, not running a marathon. Not exactly Bert Trautman.
The embarrassing thing for Nine Chins is that he even got a golf injury. Akin to a darts or crown green bowls injury.

I'd actually give him the benefit of the doubt that his injury was as stated, why would he lie about something like that and why would he take the rest of the season off? Ok maybe to go on a cocktail waitress binge, we'll never know.
Given his injuries it was an impressive effort and a one off effort, the Woods of today is not the Woods of 4-5 years ago, I just don't think he'd have the mental strength to do it now.

Re: 606v2 Tiger Woods Fan Club
I'm not saying it wasn't that injury. Just that a stress fracture isn't as bad as say a compound fracture which people seem to think it was and they made him it out to be a Victoria Cross winning effort. Plenty people do stuff with "broken" a.k.a stress fractures in their bones without realising it. No doubt it was uncomfortable, but it can't have been so much of an inconvenience as he still managed to play and win, but then it's only golf, not the most athletic or physically demanding of sports.
Still, any golf injury is laughable especially from a guy who takes so much "care" (read pride) in his conditioning.

Even a stress fracture coupled with the knee injury I would reckon would be painful enough to at least nag away at his concentration.
I actually (against Doctors advice) took my third dan grading with a broken finger (broke in a sparring session 4 days before. The set line work and katas (pre set routines) were actually more difficult to maintain form and concentration than the free sparring (where adrenalin and the survival mechanism kick in).

Well i am referring to accounts from his physio keith kleven and hank haney, i don't think they are exaggerating. Kleven said it was the worst week of his professional life. I would take anything Tiger says with a pillar of salt naturally.

Do people think Tiger faked his "winces" at Torrey Pines. That's laughable.
How much did it actually hurt and did it affect his ability to swing and concentrate? Who knows, but obviously not too much for Tiger ... after all, he WON the major. It's hard enough to win a major when you're healthy -- just ask Lukey, Westy, Stricker, ...

Perfectly plausible that he's play acting a bit, just like footballers and tennis players over act. Shrewd psychology move by the 9 chinned one as his opponent would think he's easy meat.

It is possible, but I doubt that he would employ portraying a physical weakness as a psychological move.
At the time the dominant psychological consideration was in the heads of most/all of the other players. They seemed to think he was unbeatable. I believe that was his mindset too, so to portray any weakness doesn't seem to fit with his on course demeanour at that time.
Rocca of course was so unfancied he really had nothing to lose so may not have cared about the self imposed pedestal of Woods, but I don't think Woods would have thought anything other than he's better so he'll win.

Yes. As I walked down the fairway towards my ball, I was thinking 5 iron / wedge to get to the green. Then I saw my ball sitting right next to the plaque (obviously we weren't playing off the black tees) so I had to pull out the 3 wood and go for the hero shot. Of course this was a mistake, but I always feel that when I go to places like that I have to take on these shots.

I've played The Grove 3/4 times. Didn't see those plaques. Ah - they are in the middle of the fairway. What does one of those look like?
Have seen them and back to back to back (followed by lip out for 4 in a row wasn't it?) is very impressive up there. Although last time (2011) they were still looping highlights of the WGC on their tellys. I think it might be time to let it go now it was 1997!
Still a thoroughly enjoyable track though.

No it was quite a bit more recently Roller 2006 infact. That's a helluva outrageous shot to be going for Ray...a 275 yard slightly uphill 3 wood (yeah ok Woods hit 5 wood - but even so)
I did actually play it off the blacks in "Back on Black". They do one every month during the spring/summer and the top 5 each time get an invite back to the season ender in October. They use the 2006 WGC Sunday pin positions as well.

Re: 606v2 Tiger Woods Fan Club
Went to The Grove last year - lovely venue for a corporate golf day, despite the greens turning me into a gibbering wreck. Was invited again this year, but unfortunately couldn't go (due to being on the wrong side of the planet on that day).
One of my playing partners last year had a chest-puffing moment when his drive went further than the plaques on the 9th ("Ho ho - I outdrove Tiger" etc). He didn't want to hear that the black tees were about 50 yards further back.
Liked the display cabinet in the pro shop with a ball from each competitor from the WGC... each one signed except the one from the winner (who doesn't sign balls, but happens to have his name printed on them anyway). Coincidental given the competing threads that have popped up here, but I believe Poulter came 2nd, right?

Perhaps, he's not intelligent enough to use sneaky tactics. He does however portray weakness when he says his absence from certain events is down to "fatigue"
The only man who puts the "fat" in "fatigue" is Mr Lowry.

I was slightly past the plaques (but I'm not showing off) and I think it was slightly downwind, so probably playing more like 250 yards. It's quite an open hole, not much penalty for missing the target, and it was 2008 so the Woods win was fresh in the memory! I didn't try it again when I went back a couple of years ago.
What was the back on black like?

Millions? Ha ha. Millions of vacuous slags frothing at the gash being helped out of their soiled knickers. That's it.
For the record, Nine Chin Woods nor any other sportsman has ever done anything remotely heroic. It's just a game they enjoy, or at least do because they are good at it, nothing heroic in that at all.

Re: 606v2 Tiger Woods Fan Club
incontinentia,
Most of Tiger's Foundation Funds go to a school in Southern California.
A contrarian view would be, if he had stayed living in California where he was born and grew up he would have paid millions more than that in tax that he's moved to Florida to avoid.
And those taxes might have benefitted the State of California as a whole instead of his chosen Cubs.
Edit: PS: And remember that a high proportion of that Foundation funding has come direct from sponsors in lieu of appearance fees (and taxes) and the charitable contribution from tournaments instead of benefitting the local area - especially the AT&T at Congressional, and the Deutsche Bank.

Re: 606v2 Tiger Woods Fan Club
Kwin - Our club ran the AT&T tournament for two years. A quarter million went directly to local charities (I was at the disbursement events for the Tiger Woods Foundation events).
Not saying anything of the above isn't accurate, however!
