Ulster v Treviso Match thread 23rd November 2012
First topic message reminder :
FORWARDS (14)
Herring, Brady, Black, Fitzpatrick, Court, Afoa, McComb, Simpson, Diack, Joyce, McComish, Birch, Wilson, Williams.
BACKS (10)
Heaney, McIlroy, O’Connor, Olding, Wallace, Payne, Allen, Cochrane, Andrew, Nelson.
Adam D'arcy is again a notable absentee yet again. This really is mind boggling considering the performance last week. Ricky Andrew is very far off the pace. And our back three in general were very inexperienced. As I mentioned before, D'Arcy is definitely in full training. Yet Anscombe seems to have him at the very bottom of the pile.

If we had lost that then I would be quicker to blame stupidity than anything else. Yes we had a bad line out but we knew that Diack is not a lock, but some plan daft decisions at the end from the lads and the back row doesn't look even close to being balanced.

If playing badly and winning is the sign of a championship winning side after tonight we should send them down to play the Pumas tomorrow

Okay lads.
Who ordered the "Get Out of jail Free" cards for this season?
We need to put in another order!
Phew doesn't even come close.
Really could do with a lineout.

Two away wins on the road without the bulk if the team. Both were fortunate but at the end of the day we have the points in the bag.
They will be glad to get home and prepare for a tough one next Sunday.

I really don't look on either of those results as "wins".
More that we somehow managed to contrive to fail to lose despite looking like we were really trying to. I didn't think we could get any worse than last week but, we did!
Still, 4 more and 11/11.
SUFTUM!
Do you think McCommish will be getting a wee rest for a week or 2?

Well with our internationals coming back I suspect you are right on that MrsP
Re: Ulster v Treviso Match thread 23rd November 2012
I suppose if either or both of those TMO decisions had been different it might have put that performance in a different light.
Not saying they were wrong as I couldn't see the ball either but I mean if they had been able to be awarded.

Really really stupid late hit from McComish on the Treviso player. Was very little contact but when you are closing out a game with a few minutes on the clock its just stupidity to make any contact with an opposition player after the ball is gone.

Re: Ulster v Treviso Match thread 23rd November 2012
It easy to slate McComish but he made the most tackles last game and he won't be far from the front in this one either.
The singular biggest problem was the lineout and giving away possession in that fashion is a killer. Ulster only had McComb and to a lesser extent Diack to throw to, so if they were both covered there was no option. Williams, McComish and Wilson simply isn't an option from the side so why did O'Connor keep kicking for touch so much? The penalty he missed to touch actually wasn't the worst outcome and Treviso didn't look too clever with the ball in hand.
I couldn't believe Wilson opting to go for the lineout where Ulster were hopeless only to be reprieved by Peter Allan who said the scrum (where Ulster were imperious) had already been called!
Ulster are playing for Nevin this year, and maybe they deserve a few breaks?

Well said Aukster
Look you make your own luck. I'm delighted to have 8 points from these two games. A lot to work on but it's the points that count and a lot of fringe players have gained valuable experience and game time which will stand us in good stead down the line.
I thought our general play was much better this week and it was mainly the line out which let us down. Credit to Treviso who played some good attacking rugby and were very unlucky not to get the win at the end.

I didn't see the game, I had to do a recording session for a friend tonight, but saw the last few minutes on someones iPhone... I'll take it, is all I'll say!
Internationals can't get back soon enough. Tuohy, Henderson, Jackson, L. Marshall and Cave will all come back into the 23 and maybe Henry, Gilroy and Bowe too. Just having Tuohy and Henderson back will already make such a huge difference to the lineout. Isn't Muller going to be in contention soon too? A much changed pack for next week please!
We keep winning- what else is there to say? Except
a) Never play monopoly against Mark Anscombe, because he has a big supply of get out of jail free cards
b) Well done Peter Nelson on your first senior try! First of many I hope.

Re: Ulster v Treviso Match thread 23rd November 2012
Ok Notch I will help you out
Basically
Lineouts don't work with 1 lock
When we see that lineouts don't work we have great leaders on the pitch who keep going to them well we are bound to get it right this time
Marshall proved his worth...... again
Nelson did pretty well on his debut
Tom Court realised Nelson probably quicker than him to get in the corner good call Tom
Nick Williams Possibly/probably scored 2 tries but it was impossible to tell from the cameras so they were not given
Scrum was good again
Back row didn't look very balanced
McComish may be cited although it wasn't as bad as what the italian made out
Finally at the end we did our best to give the referee a chance to send one of us to the bin or to let Treviso win via a penalty but luckily the ref didn't feel like it and neither did the Trevisio Kicker and we held on
Think that pretty much covers it

Blimey, only just seen this score. Treviso missing more players due to Ints?

Re: Ulster v Treviso Match thread 23rd November 2012
It was pretty close indeed LT.
We were missing 14 twixt injury and call-ups and Treviso were missing even more I think.
I really think most of the problem was our total inability to win our own lineout. If that had been even just bad instead of shockingly bad the result would have looked better.
The really bad thing is that Nick Williams crossed the line twice but the ref, quite appropriately asked the "Try, yes or no?" question and the ball could not be seen. If the TMO had been able to give those tries the scoreline would have been incredibly flattering to us.
Mind you, as I say the lineout was just...

they do have 26 internationals in their squad. mostly Italian and mostly missing yesterday .LondonTiger wrote:I am worried about our matches with Treviso next month
that's one of the problems in having 4 nations in a 12 team league. the number of internationals you lose.

Thank God for that. At least when we're in crisis, I know where we stand.
Saw snatches of this last night, and bits and bobs of the Leinster/Glasgow game this morning. Going to watch Ireland vs Argentina this afternoon.
By Monday, I may have started following volleyball instead...

Enjoy the game Don

Ha ha! I was talking to a guy in work yesterday, and when someone mentioned our winning streak, we both said, on cue, "it's got to end some tme".
Welcome to Ulster, where success is just failure having the week off.
(Ireland by four today, Ulster to do the double. Tell no-one.)
