India v England, Second Test, Wankhede Stadium Mumbai
First topic message reminder :
So the 2nd test of the 4 match series between India and England is getting underway at Mumbai's Wankhede stadium from tomorrow. The hosts are leading the series after their win in the first test at Ahmedabad.
The track is expected to have assistance for spinners, but the possible bounce from the track and proximity to the sea might offer something for the seamers as well. The pitch was previously used in a Ranji match where Sachin Tendulkar and Ajinkya Rahane had scored hundreds.
The weather is expected to stay good.
Both sides have injury concerns going into the match. Fast bowler Umesh Yadav is unlikely to be risked as he's not fully recovered from the back problems that necessitated calling up Ashok Dinda as cover for the 2nd match in a row. However Dinda, who had covered for Ishant Sharma is unlikely to make it to the playing side, Ishant should be the prefered option. This will be Virender Sehwag's hundredth test. India probable side.
Virender Sehwag
Gautam Gambhir
Cheteshwar Pujara
Sachin Tendulkar
Virat Kohli
Yuvraj Singh
Mahendra Singh Dhoni
Ravichandran Ashwin
Zaheer Khan
Ishant Sharma
Pragyan Ojha.
As for England Ian Bell is unavailable for selection as he's on paternity leave. Stuart Broad has some fitness concerns. Tim Bresnan had a shocker of a match last time round, continuing a prolonged form slump. Steven Finn continues to be unfit. Cricinfo seems to think that Eoin Morgan, and Jonny Bairstow is likely to make it to the side in place of Bell.
England probable
Alastair Cook
Nick Compton
Jonathan Trott
Kevin Pietersen
Eoin Morgan/Jonny Bairstow
Samit Patel
Matt Prior
Stuart Broad?
Graeme Swann
James Anderson
Monty Panesar.
In 2006 England won at Mumbai on the back of an all-round performance from captain Andrew Flintoff and good bowling performances from James Anderson and Shaun Udal. The last test at the venue produced a very exciting match that finished as a draw with the scores leveled.

India shouldve picked more than one bowler for this match, unfair on ojah to have to carry the team

Pitch turning a lot more now, KP is having a stormer of a game. Stay out there Kev, you can make 250 here. He just needs able support from Prior and the rest. We're just 58 runs from a 100 lead so let's now aim for a 150 lead! It's doable.

If these two can stay in for a while anything is possible as they will both score quickly

Re: India v England, Second Test, Wankhede Stadium Mumbai
"On the question of Bairstow's dismissal, my reading of law 32(3) suggests that the catch was legitimate. The relevant section reads: 'The act of making the catch shall start from the time when the ball in flight comes into contact with some part of a fielder's person other than a protective helmet, and shall end when a fielder obtains complete control both over the ball and over his own movement'. I stress the word 'start'. The catch started when it hit the catcher's chest and finished when the catcher secured the ball in his hand. The intermediate involvement of the helmet does not invalidate the catch."

On Bairstow's dismissal on Twitter: "Andy Flower went to see match ref and umpires re Bairstow. They said as time has been called and batsman had left field. Umpires said they couldn't reverse decision unless India agreed. MS Dhoni was asked but chose not to."

Dohni really needs a plan B...80 out of 116 overs from two bowlers...one of whom has shipped 134 runs for his wicket

In this match yes....but then England are averaging more against spin in the series than they are seam now despite Ojahs heroics.
Its more the ridculous number of overs Ashwin has bowled I was refering to anyway, more than the other 3 combined for his wicket!
Fatigue may become a factor for these two come second innings. Its lucking likely the front 2 could amass 50 overs in this innings then have to bowl again in a day, even for spinners that a huge demand

I agree with PSW here, Ashwin has bowled 1/3 of the Indian overs. That has to take its toll eventually.

Oh Prior
Bit much for Boycott to give him so much stick though given his record, although at least he used to make sure it was his partner that got out

Ending was a T20 ...let it slip
I guess Monty just cant wait to get in and have a bowl on this
But I really dont think anyone expected them to have a lead, certainly not a significant one. Games in Englands favour even batting last.

Right we've lost our way towards the end, still a lead of 86 could be priceless (what a shot by Monty!). We don't want to chase any more than 150, so bowling India out for under 236 is essential. I fancy us to do that, hope Swann opens the bowling. Come on England!

Re: India v England, Second Test, Wankhede Stadium Mumbai
I think we fell about 35 short of what I'd classify as a 'commanding lead' - one where we'd still stand a good chance of winning, even were India to make 300 in the second innings.
We now have to bowl exceptionally well, and crucially take our chances.
I'm also giving Swann the new ball to have a bowl at Gambhir.

Re: India v England, Second Test, Wankhede Stadium Mumbai
If anything England's spinners get more out of wearing pitches than India's do. But you have to consider that India's batsmen play spin very well. A few will be very keen to do well too - very strong possibility that it will be Sachin's last innings in front of his home crowd.

For me monty will be the key. Swann will bowl well but that is what we have come to expect, however, monty hasn't always produced in the past. We will need to bowl well as a team to maintain the pressure.

Bowling Panesar with the new ball, a bit risky but i like the fact that Cook makes these kinds of calls.

Re: India v England, Second Test, Wankhede Stadium Mumbai
Not really risky - just common sense. I'd rather see Swann bowling at Gambhir but never mind.
Commentators going on about the field setting to Sehwag. I think they're being a bit tough on Cook: I can rarely, if ever, remember Sehwag getting out prodding and poking. He's usually bowled or caught in the ring.

I actually think that Swann bowls better in tandem with Anderson and Panesar better in tandem with Broad to be honest.
