Weight training and golf!! Empty Weight training and golf!!

Post by TRUSSMAN66 Fri 23 Nov 2012, 10:29 pm

I've spent the last twenty years bodybuilding and have become pretty big (I'm proud of my physique even if I cheated to get it)..However I play regular golf with the boys at work but I always seem to slice it.....

Usually playing after a workout the night before...

just wondering If having sore shoulders et al means I'm not completing my swing because they are not loose....

Don't get me wrong I'm not a ten handicapper or anything but just wondered If heavy duty training is detrimental to a natural swing etc...

The obvious question would be...how much stretching do you do?

Just my opinion but weight training should be ok as long as you dont compromise flexibilty. Having said that, Stephen Ferris can hit a 200 yard 7 iron with half a backswing, so maybe flexibility isnt the be all if you're a complete beast.

Personally, I think being particularly muscular is a no-no with respect to a decent golf swing.

I agree, a decent golf swing and hitting the ball far is about swing speed, coordination and timing, not how musclebound you are. A lean flexible supple player with a high swing speed will hit it farther than a gym-addict who spends all his days taking steroids and posing in a mirror.

That said, I've seen a lot of poorer swings than that of Mike Dobbyn and he's both huge and built like a brick Poopie:
