So it’s the return fixture.

We all know what’s at stake. So I’ll refrain from filling this initial post with a flood of rhetorical questions.

In an interesting quirk, Ulster will definitely be without their captain, Johann Muller (eight weeks with a broken arm), and there’s a possibility Northampton might be without theirs (Dylan Hartley has been cited, when and where it is to be heard is TBC). So both sides will want to see their senior players and internationals step up.

I’d expect the Ulster team to be much the same. If we can win this, we are in control of the group, so let’s go with what served us so well last week. Maybe get the youngsters on a bit earlier, if we look comfortable, and I’d like to see Small Parcel coming off the bench this time.

In terms of replacing Muller, I know Anscombe has already highlighted in the press that Henderson can play second row, but personally I’d just move McComb in. I think he’s earned it, I’d have faith in him, and it keeps disruption to a minimum. Ulster’s back row looked well-balanced and industrious last Friday.

What changes, if any, do Saints fans foresee? Will we see Myler starting instead of Lamb? Any changes to the front row, after having a tough time in Franklin Gardens?

Don, sorry to burst your bubble but is the match not on Saturday? Expect McComb to come in and that's it. Maybe Macklin to the bench ahead of Lutton.

Saints I expect will start with Dowson at 8, Dickson at 9 and Myler at 10 with Tom May in for Waldouck

Errr... yes, why, that's what I've typed. Honestly. Ermm........

<edits orgiinal post double-quick>

Good call on Macklin. I'd like to see him make an appearance towards the end, if we have a comfortable lead. All I ever see of him is consistently good cameos. Why hasn't he started a game yet? Alright, obviously not Northampton, but still. It would be a real challenge for him to come on on Saturday.

However, I think this one will be much closer. There was a touch of the ambush to what we did to the Siants last week - they'll be wise to us this week.

I'm much more nervous about this week than last.

As Anscombe and Best both pointed out, last weekend's result means nothing unless we back it up with a similar performance this weekend. Now, I'm not saying that I don't think the boys will do that, just that I think there is more pressure on us to perform at home.

I think it could go either, Saints are much more wanting of revenge because we got the bounus point and will be more dangerous than if we didn't, or Saints could be giving up on H-cup and concentrating on the League?

Ulster can see just the one change, Muller for McComb.

We did warn you how highly we rated Payne ,doctor grey, I was a bit worried he'd have a bad game and you would have been, what you mean as good as fodden?

I can't undersstand Afoa's signing? all the other NIQ's have got names we can play with,
You'll get
Mullered in the Lineout
Nicked in the back row
Ruaned in the halfbacks
House of Payne in the Backs

But John Afoa, can't think of anyway to use his name, mind you it is better than when we had BJ Botha. Shocked

I don't think that's quite true, nick a win by 1 point and you have total control over the group. You need to win again but that's a pressure that is to be expected just by virtue of being at home.At least now you can relax and play whatever game is needed on the day be it an open running try fest or just letting Jackson/Pienaar kick your way to victory.

The try bonus point last week takes some pressure off in terms of the result- can afford it to be a tight game- and adds more pressure in terms of expectation and the Saints backlash.

All in all, there can't be any complaints from our side. We have lost our key forward and Captain to injury again its true, but that aside we couldn't be better placed.

Just beating Saints would put them out altogether. Even if we just scrape past Saints and Castres get all 5 points against Glasgow, we still lead them by 5 points. So all we need to do is match their result away to Saints in Round 5 at home to Glasgow. They need to get at least one more point than us in their next two games to keep the group alive into Round 6 and even that gives them only the slimmest chance of winning it- they'd have to beat us with the TBP and a bigger margin of victory than ours at Ravenhill. Get the same or more match points from our next two games as Castres and the last game is a dead rubber for us.

Our Heineken Cup winning streak at home stands at 12 games, we need to round it off at 14. I think 9 points from these next 2 home games settles the group altogether. We can afford to only get 4 points at home to Saints because we can target the TBP in the next round against Glasgow whatever Castres do. If we get that, for them to catch us they need to repeat our feat of beating the Saints away with a TBP.

If the tries come, great. If we win ugly, great. Either way we take control. 4 points will do, we don't need to chase the BP unless its on.

According to this, we're going to see Henderson at lock and Nick Williams in the backrow.

Not too sure I like that. We're losing a lineout option in the back row- yes we have more in the way of ball carriers but lineout was our weakest link on Friday. Though this is probably the most physical pack we can name right now.

If Hendy moves to lock I'd far rather see Robbie Diack at 6. Much more assured and will give a lineout option that is lacking with Williams/Henry/Wilson.

However even if Big Nick starts at 6 I'm less worried as Henry will be there. Most of the games we played with Wilson and Williams in the back row had McComish at 7 and as good as he's been this season, Henry is a class above him and brings so much to the team.

Maybe it would be better in that case to have Hulk at 8 and Wilson to 6 quicker away from the scrum, better worker leave hulk to do the smashing?

Oh, hopefully Williams will play 8 everywhere except the base of the scrum. Wilson will pack down at 8 and wear the shirt on his back, but his game is much more focused on the tight stuff. Leave the open space to Nick Williams.

He hasn't had a really big game since his rib injury, and this would be a simply wonderful time to see him back to his 'HULK SMASH' form from the start of the season!

Agree with what you's say 100% regarding Williams. When he came on last week the control at the base of the scrum fell away abit but with Muller out I don't see the harm in Henderson moving to lock and Williams coming in.

This is the sort of game that Ulster have to win to assert their dominance. No point beating Northampton away if they're not going to put the performance in at home.

Just watching the last match back, and it looks to me like Muller got injured well before he actually came off.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlv_iBUYKQs&feature=g-high-u

At 43 minutes on the game clock, he makes a tackle on Hartley and stays down briefly. He then gets back up but he's definitely holding his right arm from that point onwards until he comes off after 50 minutes. Pretty incredible stuff.

Reminded me of the time Rory Best fractured his cheekbone during an Ireland game and staggered back to take his place in the defensive line despite being in great pain and hardly able to see!

This on Besty from the ERC website;

http://www.ercrugby.com/eng/news/19904.php#.UMioXM1pGtQ

Rory Best has been in great form for them in this campaign and as well as featuring in the top 10 forwards of the season he is also ranked as the leading defensive player in European club rugby this season.

The Ulsterman has completed all 33 tackles he has attempted and also won a competition high nine turnovers in his 235 minutes of action so far.

16 of those tackles were against Saints, that was a hell of a game he had, but nine turnovers in three matches? More than any openside in the Heineken Cup? I couldn't be happier to have a man like that leading our team on Saturday! OK

Well he's got a great chance, but there is a long way to go until the Tour. I don't believe the guys who are filling those Test shirts should be selected until everyone on the Tour has had a chance in the provincial games.

I'd say right now he's looking good for the Tour Party alright- at this stage of the season you can play yourself out of that tour party, but its near impossible to play yourself into the test team.

Let's see the Six Nations first.

Ohhhhhh!

Getting nervous and excited in equal measure now!

Just watched the highlights of the Tigers' visit to Ravenhill last year.

The stuff of dreams and in no way suggesting that Saturday will be anything like that but 2 things made me smile even more widely than the result.

Wee paul Marshall's try and the final whistle.

The first is pretty self explanatory but the second was because of the attitude of most of the Tiger players (and supporters I have to say) but Murphy in particular. The warmth of the congratulations he offered to the Ulster players around him is one of the things that makes me love rugby!

Great day.

Let's hope for another great day on Saturday.

Ravenhill better be jumping; it always is and always has been when a big team comes calling. But games against Aironi? Crowd just waits for it all to happen.

What I'm saying is the more the odds are against us, the louder the crowd. People are expecting the Saints to get their tummies tickled after last week but they have enough about them to make this very hard. And I expect them to play much closer to their potential.

So we need to Stand Up! If everyone else is like me it's no worries. Because I'm already buzzing.

Very curious saints team. Clark in the 2nd row? Doesn't look to have the bulk IMO. Their half backs will be better or rather much more suited to the saints game plan but I don't think may and the wings are anything to fear. A quick start and I think we can have them.

Agree with notch though we (the crowd) need to be up for this one from the start

So a lot was made on Sky by the pundits of the 'Lions Battle' between Dylan Hartley and Rory Best. They love their 'Lions Watch' on Sky, and they love it when two potential Lions come head to head. Unfortunately, the bold Dylan took the idea of himself and Rory fighting it out a tad too literally for his own good and thats been a source of a lot of chat this week... people get a bit overwrought on the forum about that kind of thing. But in terms of banter I simply love this comment the URSC slipped in at the bottom of their preview;

Contrary to rumour, Rory will not require boxing gloves, on account of a technical knock-out secured in Round Three.

The build up to this game is a lot quieter than the last time.

I think its because we knew what sides both teams would put out so less speculation from us.

Second i think Ulster are expected to win this one. After the display away from home everyone kinda is expecting even better at home.

Saints are to good a team to expect a win against and are well capable of winning in Ravenhill

Look at how opinions have changed (righly or wrongly)

Last game Saints were slight odds on favs, 5/6 I think, Ulster slight odds against 6/4 I think

Ulster now 1/8 on, Saints 5/1.

To be honest those are really big odds on Saints, think game is a lot closer than that.

But as a swing on opinion, bookies odds fairly reflect it. and thats a big swing from away from home being given about a 45% chance of winning to the home game about 85% chance of winning.

Do we King?!

Because there is quite a lot to talk about in that Northampton side if you wanted to... they haven't even named a number 8? What is that?

I guess most Ulster fans (including me, I have to admit) are confident we can handle whatever and whoever they put out. The odds give us an 85% chance of winning then? Sound about right. I'm confident but I'm certainly not over-confident. Saints can beat us if they get the head game right and believe they can win this. I believe we'll have our heads right, and at Ravenhill...

This has been Saints problem all season.
Adding to that, for the match last Friday, throw in the strange selections for the starting line-up and the bizarre game plan. The result is a perfect recipe to be crushed by a very good team. UFB.

If we get the selections right and the game plan right and the mental aspects right, we (Saints) should be in it to the end.
Otherwise?

You know doc, there seems to be bad blood for some Ulster and Irish fans and it's all about Dylan Hartley. But I say forget about all of that.

But forget the current team, I like the Saints because I like their fans. At Stadium:MK- some of the most gracious winners and gracious people. And whatever happens on Saturday if I bump into any of the Saints faithful I'll be the same in return.

I don't see why people would have bad blood over the Saints, what Hartley does is his decision. I think the Saints fans have been great anytime I have met any and I will be the same if I met any after Saturday.

Thanks guys.
I agree that Hartley is a bit of a turnip. Very good player. But if he can't control himself, then there is always the chance of becoming a lightning rod and a liability. He should have grown out of this by now.

I think Saints and Ulster supporters always seem to get on well. At the Gardens last Friday, the two groups were having each other on in the best fashion. Lots of people hanging around afterwards just having a blast. No bad blood in sight anywhere.

The thing about Northampton is that its a Rugby town. People get the ethic because that's how everyone was raised. I'm not from Northampton. But I lived, worked and played there for a while, and I think that's where I learned to respect the sport the right way. From playing hard, from being quiet during kicks, all they way to how to respect and treat the opposition.

I would say there is actually very good blood between both sets of fans. From what I've heard from those who travelled over to MK and FG they have had a fantastic time.

I've heard nothing but praise from both sets of fans.

Now, Hartley is a whole different kettle of fish but a lot of that is in a pantomime way too.

But most of the fans seem not too bad.

Apart from the ones on here like!

Well I can see Williams making an impact just to show that Wilson ain't safe so maybe he will score then again maybe Northampton will try and feed him beforehand and go bankrupt and have to forefeit you heard it here first

No way - Ulster are turning him into to a model pro, but he's only on a 1 year contract - wonder where he'll be going next? Maybe we could loan him to Connacht

Saints might win. Or Saints might lose.
But, we will all know something if Jared Payne scores again.
And that is..........
Saints are better dancers than Jared Payne.

Pleasant article about Chris Henry from Gerry Thornley

The Irish Times - Saturday, December 15, 2012

Years of sweat, sacrifice and reinvention go into Henry's overnight success at Ravenhill

Things are going well with Ulster and the flanker sees good times ahead with Ireland too, writes GERRY THORNLEY, Rugby Correspondent

For all the young tyros breaking through, there are also the Chris Henrys, Mike McCarthys and Donnacha Ryans. Late developers who are triumphant proof that if at first you don’t succeed, you just keep trying. At 28, Henry’s time has come.

Having re-invented himself two seasons ago as an openside flanker to become a vital cog in the Ulster machine, Henry was an ever-present in their march to last season’s Heineken Cup final and their Player of the Year. He also won his third and fourth caps back-to-back in the November Tests.

Like others of his ilk, he probably appreciates it all the more now. “I think like every professional rugby player, you are impatient. I’ve known Donnacha Ryan for a number of years and he’s a great example of it. We’ve played so many Irish A games together, and even plugging in the Ulster and Munster A teams, and it has been very frustrating at times but well the worth wait. Absolutely.”

Through it all, though he never doubted he would be a professional rugby player, there were times when he wondered if it would be with Ulster. “I was nearly away two or three years in a row. But because you had to work longer and harder for it I think that makes you less complacent, especially at the moment. The competition in this side is fairly fierce.”

For two years in succession, Henry seriously considered adding to the ex-Ulster conclave at the Exeter Chiefs but David Humphreys, especially, and Rory Best persuaded him to stay.

When injuries mounted again in 2008-09, Matt Williams gave him his chance. His debut came in the home Heineken Cup match against Harlequins.

Incredibly nervous

“I remember being incredibly nervous. Nick Easter was their eight, and he was playing for England at the time. It was a horrible night, the game went so fast and I had to go off with a shoulder injury but we won and I was reasonably happy with how things went for me.”

In the last three and a bit seasons, he has played 80 times, all but nine starting, as Ulster ended a run of 12 pool exits to become Euro contenders.

“For the guys who have been here from the beginning, when times were tough, and now things are going well, I think it means more to them. There were real dark times up here, big time, when Matt left and Steve Williams came in.

“Rory got injured and Brian gave me the opportunity to captain the side and I completely felt out of my depth then. You were dealing with a team that weren’t winning and had a lot of big personalities still. It was daunting, but I definitely think I learned more in those hard years than I have in the last couple of years.”

In particularly he appreciated the need to “keep fighting” as the team began to eke out hard-earned wins, and to develop physically in the gym, before making the pivotal move to seven. “Looking at Ulster, with Stephen Ferris and Pedrie Wannennburg there, I was never going to get on the team at eight or six.”

McLaughlin, a breakdown specialist, was particularly helpful. En route to last season’s final, their defence was especially obdurate and here, Henry excels. He leads the line, often alongside Best, working in tandem to effect choke tackles or get over the ball and win penalties or slow the ball down.

Henry made three choke tackles to force turnovers last week in Franklin’s Gardens and made 18 tackles, none missed, while only giving away one penalty.

He showed good hands as first receiver in the passage which culminated in Tommy Bowe’s try, made the last carry for the recycle which led to Jared Payne’s try. He’s also a good line-out option and one of the team’s leaders.

With a degree in geography, he may teach and coach one day, but he hopes there’s plenty more years in his career yet. Rugby has always consumed him, ever since he began playing at five, just down the road from Ravenhill with Malone, where his late father Willie was a player and club president.

After Wallace High School and the Ulster and Ireland schools teams, through the Ulster academy and two years on a development contract, he also played AIL for a couple of seasons each with Malone and Ballymena.

The latter move to play off the back of a big pack, he says, was particularly useful, and he maintains that for a young forward being groomed in the AIL is imperative.

Older brother

His older brother John played openside for Ulster schools (“He taught me the physical side of rugby, he used to beat me up in the garden”) and a younger brother, Daniel, is playing for Napier University in Edinburgh.

Willie Henry was also a seven, although sometimes Malone played him on the wing. Along with his mum Deniece, his dad always kept the faith. “He could see there was a spark for rugby in me and even in my medallion year (at 16) he thought there was a real opportunity for me.”

His dad would put the Dubbin on Henry’s boots the night before games, and never missed a game. Neither has his mum, thanks in part to a classy touch by the IRFU when Deniece was flown out for Henry’s Test debut against Australia in June 2010.

Willie Henry had passed away four weeks before, but although it was heartbreakingly poignant, making his Test debut was also “probably the best thing that could have happened, to get out of the country and put my head into something else.

“I think Declan (Kidney), without a doubt, couldn’t have been more supportive of me. He said: ‘Look, if you want to come, come; if you don’t I completely understand’. He said if I wanted my own room I could have it, which I didn’t take. I roomed with Eoin Reddan, which was great.

“I didn’t want to be by myself, and then he also had my mum flown out for that Test, as a surprise. I never expected that. To have her there was really special.

“Ach, I think that game just flew by. Was I totally ready for my first cap? No, but it was probably the best thing for me. My dad would have given anything to watch me, but unfortunately that can be life sometimes. You look at what happened with Nevin (Spence) this year and I suppose that puts it in perspective as well.”

Last month, Henry spent only one night of the Test window at home: “It was the most fun month of rugby ever, I think. I’ve never enjoyed being part of something more. I felt, with injuries to certain people, it was an opportunity for others to step up and to feel a real part of the team.”

Particularly nervous

He was particularly nervous for his first home Test, against South Africa, and his disappointment was all the more acute because “I felt we had them and couldn’t do it. But to finish off in the way we did with Argentina was so important and when everyone comes back in the new year I hope we built on what we have, and something special can be done. And I don’t see why not.”

But more immediate is Ulster. He preaches caution. Things are going well but they’ve won nothing yet: “And until you win something it doesn’t really matter. We haven’t achieved anything yet, and there’s a long, long way to go and I think as long as we don’t get complacent and keep that mentality, we can keep ourselves up there.

“You have to have a bit of luck with injuries and you have to have boys perform at the right times of the year. There are so many aspects, but we certainly are in a great place.”

Like Chris Henry himself.
