Boxing Gloves
Could anyone suggest what type of boxing gloves I should purchase for a bit of bag work? I did have a set of Adidas training type of gloves but the padding has went from the knuckles, they are 8oz, I tried to replace them with RDX 14oz leather sparring gloves I don't like them as the padding doesn't really protect my hands properly. Any help would be really appreciated.

Pro Box Sparring Gloves (14oz) are perfect for bag work.

Hi Mackem, would you recommend the 14oz sparring gloves or another size?

How much do you weigh? I'm 180lbs and spar with 16oz gloves. Anything less is a bit too much for my sparring partner.
This site is excellent and has a lot of really good information and instruction, plus a good guide on gloves

Re: Boxing Gloves
i train/spar with full 16oz gloves.
more protection for my hands and works my arm better. if i can box how i want with the big gloves on, i could stick 14oz on and be faster and throw more hurtful punches.
but i dont wish to. plus im 220lbs.
you were using 8oz? i'm wondering how you have any knuckles left.
i'd look into trying proper hand wraps, you can alter how you wrap to protect your knuckles more by wrapping around them more.
plus you look super hard wrapping them.

Bigger the better for me. I've got a couple I pairs I use at the minute. 14 and 20oz... Sparring is all about protection for me. I don't feel the need to wear little 8 oz gloves to really try hurt my opponent.

Hi Oasis, really appreciate your feedback.
I used to use proper hand wraps I just couldn't be bothered with wrapping each time so decided to buy a pair of slip on things.
Haha I actually never had any trouble with my hands until I started using the RDX gloves ever since then my knuckles have become really stiff but while I was using the adidas ones I never felt them.
I used to be doing bag work every night but my knuckles have become sore with the 14oz gloves so have stopped for a while

Pro Box (not PU) 14oz for bag work and 16oz for sparring. Don't use slip on hand wraps either, as Oasis said, use proper hand wraps and take the time to learn how to put them on PROPERLY. I wear two lonsdale hand wraps per hand, plus, Pro Box 16oz gloves for ALL training sessions regardless of whether I'm hitting the heavy bag or sparring (you can't protect your hands too much). Im 89kg now but wore this combination of hand protection even when I fought at the much lighter weights of 67-72kg.
KP, due to the nature of your OP, I'm going to assume you aren't too experienced with boxing, therefore, in telling you the following I apologise if i am teaching you to suck eggs, the other parts of your hands are just as important as your knuckles:
When wrapping your hands pay particular attention to your wrists. You may find this especially important if you throw an incorrect straight punch at the angled section of a heavy uppercut bag (you'll sprain your wrist if they aren't wrapped well). Also, learn how to strap your thumb properly because when the time comes, and you're throwing decent leather at a top and bottom ball without thinking, it will be necessary to avoid jarring them back.
8's and 10's are intended for fighting. If you use 10's on a bag then I'm afraid you're only ruinning what is potentially a pair of competition gloves. I've never been in an amateur club that stocks 20oz gloves, and rightly so, I feel they give too much false security when punched. I've never used 20's for training, but I'd imagine with all the extra padding it would be easy to make strange contact angle's with the heavybag (another reason why it's important to wrap wrists well). Strange contacts happen with different gloves to different people at different times for different reasons....it's all about finding what feels right with you. Experiment.
If you're particularly nasty (and your coach is not on the ball) you could use a particular set of sparring gloves only when using the heavy bag this disperses the padding so you cause extra damage during sparring (right or wrong, it happens)
Anyway, good luck.

Re: Boxing Gloves
Thanks, I will take your advice Mackem, I'm 19 and don't live anywhere near a boxing gym in fact the nearest one is over an hour ferry journey and probably a couple of hours drive away from where I am.
I have been watching boxing for probably the last 10 years and this year I want to get in shape so I thought I would try some bag work and treadmill running. Think I will buy a pair of pro box like you said.
Cheers KP
