Time for a Six Nations freshen up.
Anyone else seriously excited about the coming six nations? Iam as always, couldn't care less if it's Scotland v Italy its the Six Nations it's just great.
One thing iam dreading is the BBC coverage, i love to watch the build up of any game but im seriously considering tuning in dead on kick off and clearing off to the kitchen at half time.
Inverdale oh God please this man just goes right through me, nauseating fascination with English flyhalfs makes me want to vomit, all most as much a Guscott scarves do! feel like suing him for eye r***.
Jiffy looking more and more like a rat with a voice that could shatter glass,BullDog Moore need to see a doctor his tongue is getting far to big for his mouth it's getting to the point of him needing subtitles.
Then we have Gabby Logan shoving a microphone in dejected knackered players faces asking how does it feel to lose?
Wonder if new boy to the BBC Sean Holley will make a showing? with his "well i won 3 titles" line he always spins.
But the worst bit the most annoying bit, the part to rival nails being dragged down a chalk board! EDDIE BUTLER and the montage he always voices over.
Set the mood the XX Intro* is playing (*youtube it) to players knocking on in slow mo,players looking tired at the clock then Players scoring tries and then group hugging,
the whole time Butler is talking some crap in his thick voice, throwing questions like THIS! and answering them like THAAAAT!
Please BBC NO minutes silence no dumb to the masses prematch chat stick to the rugby and get on with it.

Re: Time for a Six Nations freshen up.
Can you please submit this as the blurb to the Radio Times etc?!
I must say I enjoy listening to Moore if only for the palpable sense of rage he communicates. As for the rest they're pretty awful. A blend os ESPN and Sky coverage would do well!

Re: Time for a Six Nations freshen up.
Sky gets knocked quite a bit for its coverage, and I can understand that when Barnes & Morris are in the studio for the club games, but the likes of Lynagh, Fitzpatrick, Ryan (who does great detailed analysis), Wallace, Quinell & Greenwood (the enthusiastic pair) that they turn out for internationals and some club games are notably better than what other channels offer.
The only thing that saves BBC coverage from being the worst is ITV's urine poor WC efforts. That both channels give minimal post match analysis ends up being a blessing after you've been with them for the duration of a game.
Completely agree that Butler's special segments are the most cliched and nauseating, and with the coverage as a whole is one of the reasons that 6N games are pretty much the only matches I often go to the pub with friends to watch, so that I can't listed to Inverdale et al even if I was misguided enough to want to.

Re: Time for a Six Nations freshen up.
personally I don't mind BBC, while it does concentrate on the home nations at least it is not just an England appreciation society like sky.
I can see why people get annoyed by the likes of Jiffy, Butler and Moore, however as a Welshman I love listening to jiffy ranting and such while Butler and Moore are such a good pair of commentators, just take the coverage before the match with a pinch of salt.
Also at least its free

Agree with this (I'm English). The odd couple of Moore & Butler are priceless. Jiffy live commentary I find is a pain in the rrrsss apart from his post move analysis, which by contrast I find very insightful.

I'm an Observer reader, and Butler's better articles read like surrealist poetry. I love his rugby writings.

Butler's writing is like the expectation raised by a frosty Spring morn as modern warriors weave their brutal dance on the battlefield of dreams.
Yuck.

Butler never says it how it is; he says it like a 13th century author describing a bloody battle on a foggy moor in middle Emgland. It's fun, sometimes!

Yes, can't bring myself to listen to the BBC garbage, use the visuals but switch the radio on, or like someone else said go down the pub.
If you can find and understand it, Italian coverage is some of the most neutral and fun if not overly astute (definitely not neutral if Italy are playing, but twice as fun if they're in contention).

Indifferent to Butler, Guscott and Inverdale. Like Jiffy and love Moore. Used to think Gabby was bad but Sonja Mcglauchlin(sp?) is fekin terrible.

I certainly wouldn't shed a tear if they changed their whole lineup, and I'd be surprised if they didn't improve it quite easily.
Given that its one of the few free-to-air rugby competitions, it speaks volumes about the quality of what the BBC produce that posters above (myself included) seem keen to head to the pub to escape listening to it.

I am more than happy with most, indifferent to Jiffy, Guscott, and Wood as in I don't dislike them and quite happily potter around while they are on.
How anyone can slate Butler and Moore is beyond me, they have an odd chemistry, and Butler paints such an image with everything he says and writes, people may slate him now but when he's gone we'll all be laying tribute to how good he was!!

Can't stand those pretentious voice-over things Butler does, and if most of the pundits and commentators were any smugger or up their own, the screen would just contain cheshire cat grins and empty chairs. The empty chairs would be an improvement.

The BBC six nations coverage is awesome. The Hans Zimmer montage from mission impossible II gives me chills. It does need to be updated though. It's been 3 years.

Yeah because its so horrendously biassed! At least the Beeb is biased in favour of the majority of teams.
I hate to say it but I do broadly agree with Views views for once. Theres a lot of casual viewer gumf, possibly the worst was the "history of why Wales hates England" piece they did in the slot usually reserved for a Wilkinson documentary. My own personal gripe is their insistence of finding a frenchman who speaks English in the style of Officer Crabtree speaking French, and even when you can work out the words you realise hes just repeating back the question interpsered with errrs
Skys style is hyperbolic and at times deliberately provocative. ITV just lack professionalism and have an epic ability to pick specialist analysts with no personality and nothing of value to say, at least the BBC demands certain standards of presentation ability (unless youre French) and has some decent blonde fluff knocking about on the touchlines
In general I like ESPNs coverage (what little they do) of the Jeff best

Could be worse at least Guscottt doesn't say a guy is to slow to play international rugby on for that guy to become one of the best wingers of his generation and outstrip SHane Williams for Pace. ahem george Hook ahem
(note I realise people outside Ireland may not know what I am on about so the person is question is George Hook talking on Tommy Bowe)

21st Century Schizoid Man wrote:Or BBC Alba - nothing quite like a wee bit of the garlic !
Haha, Alba is where it's at. Now we're midway through the game and we're going to cut pointlessly to our commentator and the unfortunate injured, player who's drawn the short straw and become pundit for the day, and show them speaking to camera whilst the match continues behind them!
Having said that I'm eternally grateful to Alba for showing the pro 12. And despite not understanding a word of Gaelic, other than 'lineeee' & 'penas', I'd much rather listen to that over 'Jiffy'...
Re: Time for a Six Nations freshen up.
Also whilst I'm hear, not going to lie I'm actually quite a fan of the little, arty slow-mo montages the beeb put together.
Although at times they do overstep the mark, think back to 2007 the 6 Nations opening titles went something along the lines of, "these men are descended from warrior gods, taught never to surrender, for death of the battle filed is the greatest honour
Be interesting if they took a leaf out of the SH book, and previewed matches like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7C8Rdc-7PVo ...

Considering the BBC fame of rugby commentary was based on the greats Bill Maclaren and Cliff Morgan it is hard for them to live up to their legacy.

At least they don't do the mandatory slow mo replay of every single phase previous! like sky do.
Also at least they don't have Miles Harrison, that guy talks for the sake of talking.

Why listen to commentary? Just buy some tickets and go and watch the games live, then the only thing you'll have to listen to is the silly bugger standing next to you who knows everything there is to know about every facet of the game... it'll probably be me.

Re: Time for a Six Nations freshen up.
I'm pretty sure BBC has the option for no commentary during the 6 Nations. I used it previously and it's very refreshing. You still get the ref for information, you still get the crowd for a bit of atmosphere. Si if you don't like the commentators you could try that.
