Women's World Cup Final: Australia v West Indies
First topic message reminder :
The tournament starts next Friday.
England will be favourites, though Australia, New Zealand and in home conditions India all also have a chance.
For a variety of reasons the fixture list has been altered and remains uncertain. Sorry to blow my own trumpet but an article I wrote on that has been published on Cricinfo - http://blogs.espncricinfo.com/inbox/archives/2013/01/the_womens_world_cup_deserves.php.

That's OK mate. (I did the same thing on the NZ-Eng ODI earlier today... ooops!)
I'd say around 260-270? Anything over that would be hard for WI to chase.

Hadn't realised the psyche of the Aussies was so fragile. One compliment to the team and they immediately implode. But still plenty of time to get to 260+ And at least some wickets in hand....

She sure can hit the ball. Reminds me of David Warner with those strong arms. A huge lofted straight drive down the ground and over the ropes.

Lovely straight six. The women never used to hit with that sort of power !
Think these modern bats get some of the credit though.
From 160/3 you'd think Australia will be on for 270 ...surely too many for WI to chase ?

50 partnership. Big score on if Cameron stays in and gets most of the strike.

I wouldn't worry, Aus have already well passed what the Windies are capable of chasing. I doubt they'll get much more than 120-130 against a 'full strength' Australian attack.

Some work to do for the lower middle order - Aussie innings in danger of stalling....
Maybe that will help!

cheers DJ. They got 368 v SL, 234 v SA and 207 v NZ but hopefully the Aussies can restrict them.

The skipper has made sure the 250 will be reached...good help from Perry. Guess her batting was another reason why she had to come back in for te rather unlucky Ferling.
Not as many as it looked like being , but I think it will be enough.

Excellent partnership from Fields and Perry.
259/7 after 50 overs.
Maybe could have got 20 more runs but after that mini collapse after Cameron lost her wicket I was thinking 225 might be what they'd get.

As near as a bullseye, Corporal.
So late here... struggling to stay awake.
Tight bowling to start from Oz but a few boundaries now from the Windies.

Drama with Perry's ankle, a dubious lbw, then the Lanning 'catch', a caught & bowled... and nearly a run out now.

Clever tactics from the Windies there. Fake an injury to get Dottin out there without having to lose a wicket.
Sorry for the cynicism again, but it came directly after they sent a player out to give a message to the batters.

Dottin cleaned bowled by Lisa Sthalekar.
That's the big threat gone. She'd hit Coyte for a couple of 6s and always the main danger.
109/5... run rate creeping up to 8.

England should have been in that final as they and Australia were the better teams.
I hope the format changes for the next cup so that it's straight semi finals, not finalists based on points which can be won and lost sometimes in questionable manners.

Well done the Aussies. Can see why they were happy to face the Windies in the final. But overall I think few would argue with the view that the best team won the competition.
Was going to suggest that Coyote was a wily bowler. But effect rather spoilt by her being the most expensive.

Thanks Corporal. There's a few of those wily looking bowlers in the team.
teassoc, they'll meet again in the Ashes in a few months. I'm sure England will still be hurting so it will be another great series no doubt.

I don't think that the result of the final would have been that much of a difference had England been in it instead of the West Indies. Australia have now taken over the mantle in women's game as the best team in the world.

Maybe, but we'll now never know because of the way England were kept out of the final.
England came very, very close to beating them and Australia lost to West Indies in the Super Sixes so they have not really proved themselves as a team much better than all the others. Maybe the forthcoming ashes tour will help settle whose the best in the World.

Re: Women's World Cup Final: Australia v West Indies
Hang on.
Australia holds the Ashes, the World Cup and T20 WC. What more evidence do you need for them to 'prove' themselves as a much better team than all the others? Maybe 'much' is too much... but they certainly are 'that little bit better' than the rest. I feel the gap is widening between the Australia and England women's teams and NZ is the team on the rise. (or that's just my gut feeling on things as they stand)
You need to get over your disappointment. It's like me saying because our blokes lost in Edgbaston by a mere 2 runs - England were not the better team, is it not?

Re: Women's World Cup Final: Australia v West Indies
In my mind that England would have given the Aussies a better game in the final than the Windies ended up doing but their silly loss against SL and then throwing the game away against Aus meant, rightly, they didn't get there. No doubts Aus were the best side throughout the tournament and deserved winners.
Holly Ferling and Ellyse Perry the real stars of the tournament though.
http://www.indianexpress.com/news/no-indian-in-icc-womens-world-cup-team-of-the-tournament/1075908/2
This is the team of the tournament and England have 4 players in it compared to only three for Aus, but they all deserve their place bar perhaps Colvin.

Not really, I don't think that England would have given the Aussies that much of a better game than what the Windies did as our batting apart from Edwards and towards the end of the tournament Taylor just hasn't been performing. Anyway even if England had reached the final, Australia no doubt would have played both of their star fast bowlers Perry and Ferling in the same starting XI, thus making it harder for our batters to score easy runs without risking losing their wickets.

Re: Women's World Cup Final: Australia v West Indies
So what you are saying Boycs is that Australia didn't play their strongest XI in the final because they had no Ferling in the side? Really, they deliberately put out a weakened side in the final? It's clear they don't think she is in their best XI just yet, she is only 17 and is a fantastic prospect.
Australia would still have been favourites, and are without doubt the best women's side in the world at the moment and I agree with LB that, despite this tournament, it is then England followed by NZ then the rest. SL made big strides in this event though which is great for the game and hopefully the threat to SA and Pak of not qualifying automatically for the next women's WC will push them to improve their female sides as well.
