Disturbing boxing death
Tubagus Sakti, a 17-year old Indonesian boxer, died over the weekend after suffering a knockout loss to countryman Ichal Tobida. The referee stopped the fight in the 8th round when Sakti put his hands in the air as if to give up. Tobida threw a few more uncontested shots while the referee tried to stop the action. When the fight ended, Sakti walked around for a couple seconds before going into convulsions. According to the Bangkok Post, Sakti was then rushed to the hospital where he died of a brain hemorrhage.
Sakti had apparently been fighting professionally since he was 15-years old.

The next time I yell at the TV because the fight was stopped "too early" I'll remember this and shut up.

I personally believe that that video should be removed from public viewing out of respect. It's not nice watching someone die.

Difficult to come up with anything that hasn't been said already, but a terrible shame and a reminder of just how much these fellas are putting at stake every time they step through those ropes. So sad, Rest In Peace.

One of the reasons I absolutely detest it when some boxers are referred to as bottlers or cowards.

Awful news. Once again we are reminded of just how brutal and unforgiving a sport boxing is

What a tragic tale. RIP young man.
My eldest boy will be 12 later this year. He does karate and has already said he would like to try boxing at some point. Stories like this, however rare, make me shudder with fear. The thought of him in 3 and a bit years being 'man' enough to fight professionally seems ridiculous.
I agree with Az completely, the mods should remove the video. I won't watch it and the story is enough without the clip.

RIP, just a kid who loved his sport
Brings up the question for me of should boxers be able to turn pro before their 18 like they do in South America and Asia. I've never liked the idea as its putting a man against a boy like what happened in this fight where a 17 year old fought a 28 year old over 10/12 rounds
Disgusting that this can be seen on YouTube and needs to be reported and removed

Re: Disturbing boxing death
Shows the awful problems that boxing will always have without a single, universal authority to run it. Awful incidents like this put the nonsense of multiple champions and spurious belts into their proper perspective, though.
How was it allowed to happen? What will the consequences be? I'm fairly sure that none will be the answer to the second question. God knows that the BBBC have their faults, but at least they generally do their job on the all-important question of safety. Such protection is the least that any boxer fighting in any country deserves.

Re: Disturbing boxing death
Funnily enough was reading about the amateur Iain Weaver who has recently been denied a licence on the grounds of a slight abnormality on a brain scan. The piece stated he had two doctors letters saying he was fit to fight and you could get the impression that they BBBC had been a little punitive or inflexible in their approach on this. However things like this are a timely reminder than a too harsh approach is much more preferable to the other option when it comes to fighters safety.

Re: Disturbing boxing death
BBBOC are brilliant in that regard - You'd never get a brain damaged fighter being allowed to fight on their watch. I think they need to have Weaver Scanned Pre and post every fight and if there is even the slightest problem after fight then he gets license withdrawn.
Re: Disturbing boxing death
Do feel a bit for Weaver. Saw him when he won his ABA title in Sheffield and had a quick chat with him and he seemed a nice kid and a decent fighter. Has had a run of bad luck on the back of missing the Olympic team and getting this news. Is really difficult because the BBBC’s position is perfectly understandable but you have to feel for the kid, particularly as he will have worked a long time to get to this point and it does appear the medical determination is not absolutely cast iron in him being at risk. Is a difficult situation all round.

Re: Disturbing boxing death
Whilst tragic, most contact sports are dangerous and accidents happen. This shouldn't be used as a stick to beat anyone with. Schoolboys have died playing rugby, pro footballers have dropped dead on pitches and apparently there is a massive story brewing in the states about NFL players and brain damage. At the end of the day I'd swap my job for a chance to be a pro at any of these sports even if I knew there was a decent chance I'd cop it or receive lasting damage.

Sounds like the added punches weren't an issue......
These things happen I'm afraid which sounds callous.........
Unfortunately it doesn't make it easier to his family that they knew the risks..
The lottery of life....let's hope he's at peace..

Just playing devil's advocate here, but do you feel the same about fights like Benn v McClellan, or Eubank Watson, or Johnny Owen , or does the fact that these were great fights and the fighters well known make watching them acceptable? For the record I won't be watching this fight on you tube, but have rewatched all the other fights I mentioned there.

Maybe time acts as some kind of moral filter?
I mean....
people watch documentary's about the holocaust but i doubt they would in 1946. If you get my point.
