Sports Movies
What do you guys think is the best sports movie? As I think the one I enjoyed the most was "The Greatest Game Ever Played", I put this in the golf section.

Re: Sports Movies
Loved Hoosiers and Breaking Away.
Also enjoyed The Express for purely parochial reasons.
Haven't seen Raging Bull but that's supposed to be terrific.

Raging Bull, Remember the Titans, Happy Gilmore, Dodgeball and more recently Moneyball (which I thought was fantastic).

Great Topic -
Gotta agree with Kwini here. "Breaking Away" and "Hoosiers" still glue me to the screen. "Remember the Titans" close to those two.
Also really enjoy "Field of Dreams" and "Caddyshack" (has there ever been a worse sequel however?)
Incontinentia --- "The Ocho!"

Re: Sports Movies
Should also add that I was an extra in the movie "Slapshot". My mug nowhere to be found, left for dead on the cutting room floor.
Still, a cult classic for us hockey fans.

Kes is a great film, great book too.
Loved the part of the film when Brian Glover comes running on to the field to the soundtrack of the old MOTD theme . . . .

Space jam was pretty good, or at least it seemed like it was ok when I was 10. And in a similar vain some of the mighty duck's movies were a good watch as a kid.
If we can include documentaries then senna is a much watch for sports fans.
But the best sports movie of all time has to be http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0153080/

Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby was pretty funny. But then Will Ferrell usually makes me titter, Cohen too.

Graham Souness confronted by Yosser in Boys from the Blackstuff (tv) was pretty special, but won't mean a thing outside UK!!

Does Jerry Maguire count?
I recently provided a short review of Real Steel to my brother - I basically said it was hands down the best film ever made about the sport of robot boxing. Entertaining nonsense anyway.

Re: Sports Movies
Stroke of Genius I enjoyed (not the best film ever but reasonably informative account of Bobby Jones' career).
I know not all of you will see surfing as a sport but Blue Crush is worth a watch (especially if you think Kate Bosworth's bang tidy).
Top for me though would be Soul Surfer, the true story of the aspiring young pro surfer who lost her arm to a Tiger shark in 2003. It has a bit more resonance with me i suppose as I've actually surfed the break where the attack happened and snorkelled it in calmer conditions too.

Re: Sports Movies
As a piece of entertainment, nothing can beat "The Four Year Plan", the documentary charting Briatore's takeover of QPR. Just staggering how the management behaved and the way they treated the players and coaching staff.
"Dodgeball" is also an all time favourite, and "Caddyshack" always makes me chuckle.
"Le Grand Bleu", a Luc Besson film about the sport of free diving, is beautifully filmed and has some magical underwater scenes.

Re: Sports Movies
Ahh. The Four Year Plan. Hysterical. Many moments along the lines of "He's a f***ing idiot, I'm going to sack him." Followed up by the sacking of another manager. It's like a whole series of the apprentice in an hour and a half.

Re: Sports Movies
An activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others.
Doesnt seem right calling golf a sport when the caddy has much more physical exertion than the player.

Re: Sports Movies
Inco - sounds very much like golf although the balance between exertion and skill may well be skewed towards the skill.
For most of us it's probably hobby over a sporting pursuit but in itself I do firmly think of it as a sport. It has a ball (or equivalent) a target and a scoring system for ranking competitors against each other. Although that probably describes something that I don't consider a sport too! Tiddlywinks or marbles. Damn!
In terms of the caddy I have to bow to your success, I can't afford to retain the services of one!

Re: Sports Movies
maybe there is competition within that industry. I seen a documentary once where a male performer was bragging about holding the record for most money shots in 90 mins. Think it was about 12.pedro wrote:Porn?incontinentia wrote:An activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others.

Re: Sports Movies
Was trying to think of sports movies that I particularly liked and struggled then someone mentioned Chariots of Fire the other day. Great movie.
Got me wondering whether you could count Gallipolli as a sports movie as that was good. "How fast are you going to run?..." I remember watching that at school and everyone using those lines any time we did sports for ages afterwards. Then obviously amending them as appropriate once you had kicked someone's ass!
