10 man penalty takers fast approaching 200
Somehow the boring up the jumpers of England are only 1 try away from 200 in the 6N. Will they be able to earn the remaining 1 penalty try needed this tournament to get to 200? And who will be the next team to join the 200 club?
The " English Way", what a bore eh?

So are you saying tries or penalty tries? This makes no sense...

Get with the program yappy - of course it's penalty tries, do England score any other type?

He's saying tries but mocking the long held misled view that England are boring and only score penalties by saying the 200th try, presumably a record? would have to be a penalty try as obviously a team as dull as England cannot score any other form of try

This just confirms what most of us already know....that England score a lot of boring tries....

Thanks Chequered, I rather hoped the irony wouldn't get so lost. In terms of a record, well we'll be the first to reach 200, I think with France closest on about 167.

Re: 10 man penalty takers fast approaching 200
Bearing in mind we went through the 100 mark half way through the 5th 6Ns season in 2004, just shows how much better England were back then. The 29 tries in the 2001 season was incredible - and the form in the 4 matches played before the Lions tour that year (for those too young a Foot and Mouth outbreak meant the match in Dublin was delayed till October) was the best I have seen from a NH team.
But it was 12 years ago - in sport terms ancient history.

Didn't we get a heap of tries in 2009 as well? With Flutey and Tins in the centres.

2000 - 19
2001 - 29
2002 - 23
2003 - 18
2004 - 17
2005 - 10
2006 - 12
2007 - 10
2008 - 9
2009 - 16 (first time since 2004 scored most tries)
2010 - 6 (God help us that was bad - but 3 more than Scotland )
2011 - 13 (top try scorers again)
2012 - 7 (thank god for charge down Charlie)
So 3 times in the last 5 seasons we failed to make double figures.

Hmm with 4 against Scotland I make that just 193 tries.
ESPN makes it 199, so not sure what I have missed. Still shows our lack of potency in recent years

England were a fantastic side to watch in those days.

I'd also argue that league style defences have also made tries less likely...

Re: 10 man penalty takers fast approaching 200
if anyone is interested i downloaded the 5 nations try scoring stats in 4 year cycles going back to the first world cup. England is usually 2nd/3rd apart from 2000-2003. The golden team scored almost twice as many as the next highest team over this period. It's why they are ahead of everyone else in 6 nations try scoring. Outside of this period it's always France at the top between world cups. Ireland have been fighting out with England since 2003 (Prior to 2000 it was Scotland). Surprisingly Wales don't rate in the top three in any 4 year interval between world cups.

Interesting...
Thats about 3 tries average per game over 67 6N matches.
As a comparison HZ has 202 tries from 78 matches in the 3N/ Championship at a bit less than 3.

We did average 5 tries a game against 6 nations teams over this period, whilst England averaged a bit less than 1 1/2 against 3N/ Championship teams.

Re: 10 man penalty takers fast approaching 200
In the first few years of the 6N Italy were leaking about 30 tries a season now that figure is down to the low teens.
The difference from 97-04 to today is about 10 tries per season excluding Italy... mainly because some teams had embraced professionalism easier than others and defences have become more astute. Thats say 1 try more per game... not massive when you think about it.

Yes I realised that but the interesting thing for me is the tournament that we are watching features less tries overall as a spectacle than the 6N. This has certainly changed from the Bill Mclaren commentated 5N we used to watch from here I'm sure where the multiples of 3 were more prevalent.

2010 was a truly dire year at the start for England.
