Post by TRUSSMAN66 Thu 28 Feb 2013, 1:24 pm

I'm thinking every time Hoppo fights it's a sad reminder how shallow our sport has become when a fifty year old man is still near the top of the game...

imagine Hoppo against young Spinks, Qawi, Matthew saad etc..........

I hope he loses and the sport moves on from it's current malaise

I hope he wins and retires, but sad truth is he probably needs to be badly KO'd before he is willing to do that

I understand where you're coming from & to some extent I agree but I also see Hopkins as a fantastic example to young fighters just starting out what self belief, dedication & discipline can achieve. The guy is a fantastic athlete who is always in shape & ready to fight, he doesn't need to waste time with 12 week fight camps just to get in shape like so many fighters today or like a lot of HW's who just don't seem to bother. Not a huge fan of him to watch mind you.

Unfortunately you're probably right or Hopkins wins & still has nothing good to say! The words Hopkins & exciting fights don't generally go in the same sentence.

Cloud to retire on his stool before the twelfth whilst Hopkins is doing press ups. Think Hopkins may call it a day too, there's no one left to fight.

Hopkins v Cloud: Poll and Opinions Empty Re: Hopkins v Cloud: Poll and Opinions

Post by John Bloody Wayne Thu 28 Feb 2013, 5:37 pm

Hopkins circles around the edges of the ring and refuses to engage, landing singles that couldn't drop a welterweight now and again. Cloud unable to pin him down having come out strong in the first three rounds.

Hopkins wins on points but judges give it to Cloud as a final message to Bernard that beating young up and comers in boring fashion isn't a good money spinner. Hopkins complains, retires.

Hopkins by points in a boring fight that will just drag, lots of grappling.

i agree with sohotnot, i find that hopkins being fit enough to compete at this age, is amazing, and should be a statement to young fighters, this is what you call discipline.

quick question though, what wer the thoughts of people when formeman beat moorer, was it seen in the same way as hopkins fighting youngsters today?

Post by spencerclarke Thu 28 Feb 2013, 6:23 pm

I'll probably regret saying this but I think this will be the fight where age catches up with Hopkins. Late KO or points win for Cloud. I think Az will be about spot on with the complaining bit too.

On truss' comment I see where you are coming from but I do feel that we will get more and more fighters being able to fight on and be successful for longer as safety and training improves.

I see this as being the fight that Hopkins is stopped.

He has the ring smarts to avoid a lot of punishment and Cloud is not a masterful boxer by any stretch but maybe right fight, right time for Cloud.

Cloud TKO.

Hopkins won't win this fight, Hopkins plays mind games like he did with Pascal, Cloud will have to much aggression for Hopkins. Also Hopkins is in a win win situation if he loses, then he's just past his prime. If he wins, then the light-heavyweight division is mediocre and Hopkins will have proven again, that he is a great fighter

Agree he can be very boring. But what about the Pascal fights.

No the reason I'm looking forward to it, is because will get to see Cloud live for the first time. Also Hopkins is at that stage where anything could happen, ie Hopkins could get beat up for the first time. You can't rule out that possibility here, can you? Still think Hopkins will be too wily though.

He was ok in that. Still you have to marvel and what a guy his age is capable of doing.

He was very good in the Pavlik fight.

I must be in the minority of one who enjoys watching Hopkins fight, he seems to have a ring intellect that far surpasses everyone else at the moment, to be able to compete at world level into your late 40's is something else.

Fighters have a very good sense of who they can and can not beat. Hopkins never really showed much inclination to fight Dawson and look what happened there. He hasn't been too vocal about Andre Ward either. But it was Hopkins who called out Cloud. And he called out Pavlik too if I'm not mistaken. Many fighters who do the calling out lose though of course

He's been vocal about Ward. He doesn't want to fight him. Said that a number of times. Have to respect his honesty.

Really goes to show just how good Ward is.

Would love to see Ward in with any of the Murderer's Row. With Robinson too. I give him an outstanding chance of beating Ray. What a fight it would be with Monzon too. Carl's still going to bash him in the rematch though.

Pre Maxim Robinson beats him as do Bivins and possibly Burley, in one off fights he's the favourite over the rest. Monzon is the toughest of the lot to beat, a multi faceted fighter with no real weaknesses.

I don't rule out the possibility of any of the Murderer's Row or Robinson beating him. Nor vice versa. He certainly has a size advantage over Burly and Robinson for example. Robinson was losing to lesser fighters than Ward too at middleweight.

If Robbo can struggle with limited middleweights then an excellent smw would beat him. Especially given that Ward would probably come in at over 175 anyway.

Hopkins to adopt his usual stink-the-house-out spoiling game plan. When it fails to work he'll roll around crying trying to fake his way out a la JC and Dawson I. W goes to Cloud.

Cloud wins by UD by being busier. Or Hopkins gets DQ'd by constant moaning.

He really is turning into a grumpy old man.

That said, given my previous Hoppo predictions he will win by savage KO after making Cloud look silly for 10 rounds...

I have money on Bhop points, based on the guile and poise he showed v Pascal. But truth be told, I wish I hadn't bet. He is ancient now and I think he could be ready to go if tagged hard. But my bet is my bet. Bhop pts. Let's see

I just can't choose, I really have no idea which way to go, Cloud is pretty good but has a style that could be picked off by B-Hop, but on the other hand that style may just end up catching up with B-Hop and him not vbeing able to handle it anymore at 48.

I think it all depends on what hopkins has left. If he has anything left which is highly probable this could be Hopkins Pavlik all over again.

Cloud is a tough high volume puncher with a terrific work rate and decent power but technically not the greatest, so if Hopkins does grow old in this fight Cloud will be the one to capatilise. But as I say it all depends on what Hopkins has left and it wouldn't surprise me him proving the critics wrong yet again.

Please Cloud just finish the old man off....He is a black mark on Boxing.....

48 year old who can only fight 30 seconds a round.......and who is taking the p**s out of boxing...and is boring too.

No 48 year old should be at the top of a sport like ours.......Makes Boxing look stupid...

Stretch him in the first..and do the sport a favor..
