Its a big day for us welsh - little kids with leeks and daffs on and special days in and out of school - Any excuse eh! Any young welsh lad will tell you that one of the joys of being a child was that you could eat half your leek before you got to school - Unfortunately it still didn't keep the girls away from me

Shouldn't it be Daffyd's Day?
St George and St Andrew are the other ones, right? Just as well I'm already a British citizen as I'd probably fail the citizenship test.

Is Dafydd daffodill in Welsh? Genuinely curious. I know the Prince of Wales feathers are the emblem but where do leeks and daffodils come into it?

Re: Happy St David's Day
Cenhinen Pedr is daffodil in Welsh, translates literally into Peter's leek.
How the leek became the emblem of Wales is lost in the midst of time. One story is that a Welsh prince ordered his men to wear a leek in to battle so that they would be able to identify each other from the Saxons, but nobody really knows.

Diolch Just come back from the parade through Cardiff City Centre. Chris Coleman, possibly some players (I'm not sure) and a load of people from the FAW walked the parade and were handing out flags to the spectators. Didn't see anyone from the WRU or players which was a shame.

They had their own private party at the Vale. Robin McBryde was showing off his clog dancing.

Re: Happy St David's Day
When I lived in Cardiff I didn't tend to see much in way of celebrations for St David's Day apart from a few people wearing daffs and people bringing Welsh Cakes into work.
Maybe there was a party and I wasn't invited

I'm working with daffodil on lapel and a watch with the welsh dragon on. It's just a little symolic gesture - My boys have gone to school with small daffs - much appreciated here in Cornwall

Ahem Ruby
For shame on you Kia is correct to an extent
Saint David is translated (commonly) Dewi Sant, but David in welsh variants are Dewi, Dewydd. Dafydd......

Re: Happy St David's Day
Kia my boy, as Saint David's Day in welsh is "Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Sant" - I'm sticking with Dewi equals David in this argument. Anyway, Dewi itself is derived from Dewydd, an old Welsh form of David, whereas Dafydd is a direct derivative of the English David. Bejesus - the stupid stuff I learned when I was in Cap Coch junior school in Abercwmboi all those years ago !

Re: Happy St David's Day
Playing scrabble in Welsh must be easier to get rid of all your letters at the end.
My wife's nephews know how to sing Happy Birthday in Welsh as they lived there for a couple of years. I think it's great these languages are still alive and kicking. It's always been a regret that NZ doesn't make Maori compulsory in schools. For one thing it'd be great for speaking on the metro with Kiwi mates without anyone in all likelihood having a clue what I was on about. We all know lots of words but very few know how to speak it and I think that's a shame.
So enjoy your Dydd Gwyl (I have that accent on my Spanish keyboard but it won't let me do it with the letter w!) Dewi Sant and thanks for the culture lesson.

Ah, last bit of lecturing for you Kia - that accent, as you call it, is known as a circumflex and is a phonetic device usually used over the top of a vowel. But we Welsh use it over anything - that's what makes us special.

Cari, is that Merlin in the pic???
Hopefully it becomes a bank holiday in Wales. The partying would be out of this world! I guess they firstly need permission from Westminster for this though?

They don't have it in Spanish but they do have it in French. L'accent circonflexe was used to replace the s and from the English we can see what the French was before those changes due to English's ties to the Norman French. e.g. Étude from study Île from island dégoûtant from disgusting.

No it's St David.
It'll never be a national bank holiday unfortunately. It's been through the assembly and to Westminster and each time it's been refused.

Yes, THEY are wearing kilts. What's so funny about that? There is Welsh family tartan and generic Welsh tartan:
http://www.welsh-tartan.com/tartan-finder.php
A brief history of tartan in Wales for you:
The Welsh Kilt and Welsh Tartan
Welsh men did not have a national costume, although Welsh kilts with family tartans are now readily available, taking the men of Wales back to their Celtic roots. The Welsh wore fashion akin to kilts two thousand years ago, probably with a form of leather trousers or leggings wrapped around with rope. This form of dress remained a feature of Welsh society confirmed by the discovery of a 9th Century stone carving depicting a man wearing a kilt. This evolved through the centuries into the woollen garment we are familiar with today. Initially this would have been made from raw coarse wool and undyed. When people think of the tartan now, most think of the very colourful pattern of the cloth of the Scottish highlands. But originally the word "tartan" described the way the thread was woven to make the cloth: each thread passed over two threads then under two threads, and so on.... (Indeed, the original "tartan' was a very light, woollen material which couldn't really keep the wearer warm). This gives tartan its distinctive appearance. Unlike a conventional check, there is always a square where the two colours of thread cross creating a speckled blend of the two colours.
The clan designs of Scottish Tartans have a long traditional history, but there is little historic evidence of clan named tartans in Wales. Wales did however have regional tartans. These is evidence that tartans were not even a Celtic invention, the Chinese are thought by some to have invented tartans some 3,000 years ago! Victorian post cards of Welsh women wearing various tartan or plaid designs as recently as the 1920's and similar images are on display in the National Assembly for Wales building in Cardiff, David Morgan (the oldest established family run department store in Wales) and St Fagans Museum. The National tartan of Wales is the 'brithwe Dewi Sant' (St. David's Speckled cloth/plaid) On each piece of the genuine Welsh national you will find the distinctive St. Davids Cross (circa 675ad) which identifies the plaid. In Wales we emblemize Welsh tartan. Look for the rampant lion of the 9th century Prince of Powys tartan. There is no evidence of the Welsh wearing a sporran. The Welsh used to wear a leather wallet called a 'sgrepan'. A 'sgrepan' is very important part of the regalia serving to decorate and protect the wearer. It is made from leather, Welsh goat hair, Welsh cob hair and has leather straps.

Re: Happy St David's Day
Welsh tartans are among the oldest tartans dated, and the kilt was originally a celtic peice of cloth.
Not to mention St Patrick being a Pembroke farmer.
