Respect for Treviso Empty Respect for Treviso

Post by clivemcl Thu 07 Mar 2013, 8:55 am

I just found this video online. Highlights of the 29-29 draw with Ulster at the weekend. As an Ulster fan, Its taken a few days for the annoyance to settle. I'm now comfortably in a position to say Well Done treviso!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkD_rc92bYw

For any team, it doesnt get much better than a score like that to draw even in the 78th minute of a game. Pity about the Conversion. But what a result for them! And after beating Munster the week before!

Treviso are currently 7th in the league, just below Munster. 3 of their five remaining fixtures are against teams lower than them. So their position could improve between now and season's end.

Thing is, a friend of mine who is no big rugby follower said to me 'I can't belive we didnt manage to beat Treviso'.

What I'm saying is, Treviso are GOOD. Not the best, but GOOD.

I suspect however that it will continue to take a few years before they lose the stigma. And it might suddenly hit us when we notice them sniffing at a playoff place....

When you think that the first 15 for Treviso are in the 22 for italy so they are good. Also their HC groups haven't helped.

Their last two years results

2011-2012
Sarries 42 -17 Treviso
Treviso 26 - 26 Os
Treviso 30 - 26 Biarritz
Biarritz 29 - 12 Treviso
Os 44 - 12 Treviso
Treviso 20 - 26 Sarries

The three away matches were poor but the home ones were a win, a draw and a defeat where they got over the line but Peter Stringer got under the ball so no grounding.

2012-2013
Os 38 - 17 Treviso
Treviso 21 - 33 Toulouse
Tigers 33 - 25 Treviso
Treviso 13 - 14 Tigers
Toulou 35 - 14 Treviso
Treviso 17 - 14 Os

This year they had a harder group and yet did better results wise. They had good home record it is away that they struggle akin to Italy.

They have a decent Record in Ravenhill! Smile

Lost their first year, won their 2nd, and had a draw in their 3rd with 4 tries to 2 and a missed conversion to win at the death.

To be fair they are one of those sides that when they came into the league were instant bannana skins, and have grown from their. They have beaten the Ospreys twice this season (in Italy granted), so that goes to show how good they are at home. But the results and attitude shown in away games shows that they really are not too far from breaking into the top half of the table, and IMO are definately worthy of their HEC spot.

I think that no team looks forward to playing Treviso in Italy esp one that has a game plan built around the pack.

They are like Scottish and welsh teams who are preceived to be weak in the HC because they don't win away games.

Ulster were considered week even though they would win all three home games, because they didn't win away from home.

I think that apart from the big few team treviso would expect to beat them at home and get a LBP away.

If you consider the Munster and Ulster results came when most of the team was with Italy, they are also getting squad depth.

They have been unlucky in the pools they have got in H-cup, but I think Tigers fans have found some respect for them even if other teams in the Prem would see them as an "easy Itialian team"

I see an big improvement in them from last year in squad depth when they picked up a number of Aironi players, hopefully this year they can add a few quality NIQ players to step up a level.

Have said though, Cardiff Blues, Connacht and Edinburgh will all improve next year so its going to be very difficult to step up a level, recon 2-10 will be tight next year.

You never know. Who's to say that one of them won't react badly to a new coach or just get a bad set of results. Could even see Glasgow/Munster/Scarlets fare badly if they slipped in standards.

Post by beshocked Thu 07 Mar 2013, 1:16 pm

Leinster4life I normally compare sides when I see it necessary. E.g. when sides are in the same league position in different leagues - like Glasgow and Saracens.

Jenifer Mcladyboy I just can't understand all this back slapping and saying how good each side is. Seems like many Pro12 fans are guilty of this.

Treviso are good you say. Compared to who? 7th out of 12th is below average.

Treviso are improving. That's what I would say. They have some good wins at home and have been competitive there in the HC.

I have been impressed by their progress but does that mean I would respect them more than a Leinster,Munster,Ulster or even Ospreys? No.

Not every side can be good in my opinion. Well it's all relative isn't it?

Actually I would say that failing to get LBPs has hampered Treviso's finishing positions. Winning 9 matches in their first season was great yet with just 2BPs they finished behind Connacht who won two less matches.

Any team without a past record in HC will get tough groups. They were competetive in all but the away fixture with Ospreys in this year's tournament. Beating the Rabo champions and being unlucky losers to Tigers was clear progress over last year. Tigers fans have definite respect for them.

that they are managing to get results during the 6Ns is another good sign.

Cardiff Blues, Connacht and Edinburgh all seam to have/are recuited well, and have given them selves the best possible chance to improve, ok someone could implode or something, but they are doing everything them can to be prepare for next year.

Edinburgh should not be a bottom 3 team, and hopefully a new coach will address that, Cardiff and Connacht are adding to depth and first team.

I don't see there being a top 6 bottom 6 split like this year, instead in will be closer right down the table

To be fair beshocked Aviva and pro 12 fans talk up Exeter Chiefs with a 5th place and currently 8th place.

The point is that these teams are preforming better than peoples expections of them, like the comment in the start of the thread, "a friend of mine who is no big rugby follower said to me 'I can't belive we didnt manage to beat Treviso'."

we're not saying any of them are in the top tier like Leinster,Munster,Ulster or even Ospreys?

So no its not a case of respecting them more than Leinster,Munster,Ulster or even Ospreys like you say, its a case of respecting them more than last year thats what we are talking about.

Kingshu true but Exeter have taken quite a few decent scalps since coming up - both home and away.

30 wins, 1 draw, 30 losses since coming into the AP

http://www.premiershiprugby.com/matchcentre/fixtures/exeter_chiefs.php?section=4

Treviso have 23 wins, 1 draw and 37 losses in exactly the same period.

The likes of Ospreys,Munster and Leinster are respected more because they win more matches.

You should look at the cumulative statistics in the Pro12 and AP some time. Make for interesting reading.

They played very, very well. Not top class but when you concede three turnovers in your 22 and they make those result in 19 points- thats clinical.

The good thing about Treviso is that their fan base a really growing. They sold out in their home game against us. They have a higher average attendance than Edinburagh and maybe Glasgow?

They even had some away fans in that game against Ulster.

beshocked wrote:Treviso are good you say. Compared to who?

Connacht, Zebre, Dragons, Cardiff, Edinburgh? The problem with the Pro12 is not the quality of the sides. There are at least 6 fairly good teams in the Pro12. The problem is the much quotient of NH internationals in the Pro12 compared to England and France. That means that lots of guys are missing for long stretches of the season right across the league and it does affect things.

Treviso are periodically very good and when they are bad, they are pretty bad. I would see them as the ultimate bananaskin side- they don't yet have the consistency to be the contenders themselves, but they certainly can ruin pretty much anyones day. Their achilles heel is discipline- too many yellow and red cards. Major reason for that draw was for a change they came up against a side less disciplined than them.

They have good squad depth though. They were still able to name a number of quality players for that game and their squad players are all very capable.

Also worth noting is the Rabo's 4th top try scorer is a forward, a Treviso forward.

Oddly, he doesn't seem in contention with the Italy team at the minute.

Leinsterfan4life if that's true about the attendance that's very good.

Notch I suppose when compared to those sides then yes they are.

You could understand Treviso struggling - contributing the bulk of the Italian side - I count 18 players!

He is just coming back off an injury an that is why he isn't part of the team. He is a very good play and still is young enough.
