Knockouts that shocked the world.
Ties in with my article about the best knockouts I want to know what are your most shocking ones.
Have just started writing this and have Manny demolishing Hatton at number 50. Hatton was still the man at light welterweight and had never been beaten there, and despite seeing the punch during video sessions as shown on 24/7 he still couldn't stop it putting him away.

The most recent that springs to mind would be Marquez ko'ing Manny. Then the obvious Douglas ko Tyson & then for Gordy Lewis ko Tyson nobody saw that one coming!

McCall ko2 Lewis.
Big Oliver had told everyone what he was gonna do. Someone in team Lewis should have listened.

Re: Knockouts that shocked the world.
The most gobsmacked I've ever been by any knockout was when Tarver flattened Jones - I was fifteen at the time and have never felt such a surreal feeling watching a fight since. Ever since I'd got in to boxing, all I'd seen Jones do was comprehensively outclass basically everyone he fought and I was convinced he'd never lose, never mind be knocked out with a single shot. So to see him down and out like that was one hell of a shock.
I mean, can you imagine if, out of the blue, the hitherto untouchable, defensive master Floyd was simply sparked with one punch like that? It was such an enormous shift in the space of just a few seconds, a pound for pound number one who was thought to be unbeatable suddenly looking as if their career was in tatters.

Re: Knockouts that shocked the world.
There's a few that come to mind but not sure whether shocking knockouts because of a death should be included.
A fairly recent one would be Hopkins knocking out Trinidad, going into the fight Tito was a huge favourite and expected to steamroll over Hopkins in light of his 5 round destruction of Joppy. Come fight night he gets thoroughly schooled before Hopkins seals his place in middleweight history.

Yeah I wouldn't want to include any knockouts that caused a death IG.

Re: Knockouts that shocked the world.
Hopkins v DLH - after a very cagey affair Hopkins catches the Golden Boy with a short but sweet shot to the body that sends DLH to the canvas. I initially thought he was just winded and was amazed that he didn't beat the count. First and only time Oscar was KO'd and despite him suffering a number of losses, he'd rarely looked troubled enugh to ever be stopped.

Douglas-Tyson is the biggest in my lifetime...
I picked Arguello to beat Pryor.............Starling knocking out Goldenboy.. Breland heir apparent to Sugar Ray was huge back home....

Even more shocking for the fact that Breland was an absolute mile ahead on the cards when it happened, Truss! Luckily, the first time I ever saw that fight I did so not knowing who won it, as I wasn't all that clear on the records of that eighties crop of Welters and it was before I was a real anorak for past eras - couldn't believe that Starling pulled that one out of the bag.

Sanders vs Wlad was a bit of a shock as Wlad was starting to be rated well by the various writers of the time. Plus it's funny to watch!

Khan's v either Prescott or Garcia? Was both times touted as a classier out of their league operator and, in the first, still had the Olympic golden boy mantel.

I genuinely lost sleep after seeing that KO. The sight of Williams staring into space was enough to worry anyone.
A little more recently has to be Pacquaio vs Marquez, if the first knock down wasn't enough to shock (it looked as though Marquez would have punched a hole through a house!) the KO had me speechless... A guy who had a genuinely good chin - tried and tested through many weight divisions, out cold and motionless.
Ray Mercers sickening KO of Tommy Morrison. I'm surprised anyone was able to walk again after the initial punch, the 3 or 4 after that were just something else!
Notable mentions for everytime Enzo has been laid out... simply because they are so sickening to look at, they wouldn't be seen in a Saw movie!

How did this thread get so far with no one mentioning Foreman vs Moorer? One punch KO to enter the history books.

Re: Knockouts that shocked the world.
Agree with school project, mercer's brutal KO of morrison that could have ended so much worse with those 3 or 4 unanswered punches. Not a one punch KO but remember staring with disbelief when margarito stopped cotto and then when margarito's granite chin was destroyed by Mosley.
Recently Mitchell stopping Murray, was shocked by that as thought for all his faults at least murrays chin would never let him down.

Azania,I don't see the point in risking being hurt when you aren't in a position to defend yourself and if your shoulder is dislocated I doubt if you would be In my opinion he made the right decision and what's it got to do with unexpected knockouts?

Perhaps not at the time, and of course I wasn't around when Duran was eating the canvas but to my perspective it seems relatively obvious, what career Lightweight could have moved up to 154lbs and took on the Hitman and not been splatted? Again, at the time I guess Duran had an aura around him and his win over Leonard at 147 would have made it seem as though the task was possible.

It didn't shock the world but Nobuhiro Ishida one round demolition of James kirkland made me laugh! They didn't even have a Japanese translator for the after interview!

Foreman beating Frazier a big upset at the time. More recently khan getting ko'd by Prescott , and price going down Thompson were domestic if not world shaking upsets
