Dream WTF's lineup
As stephen colbert once said
"good evening godless sodomites."
Of the current players, in your opinion, would make up for the most exciting matches in the world tour finals?
Personally I would want the most exciting, contrasting styles in there but 2bh i could of filled this list twice over at least.
My line up:
1) Feds (nuff said) (2) Nadal (as he is the opposite of feds and I like the contrast)
3) Llodra (gotta love the old S & V) (4) Dolgo (can be brilliant but you never know whats coming next)
5) dimitrov (a young exciting talent with a shbh) 6) Delpo (love it when the fh is firing on all cylinders)
7) gulbis (I think he brings something different) 8) Nalby (still love that bh and what he could do)
Reserves:Blake (awesome power), gasquet (that bh), haas (old school variety)
So over to you, who would you pick and why?

Re: Dream WTF's lineup
1. Djoko v Nadal on an ultra, ultra slow court for a best-of-five match to see just how long two humans can play tennis before keeling over and dying
2. Any combination of baseline batterers forced to come in to the net playing on a poor-quality grass court with low and bad bounces
3. Olivier Rochus v Karlovic just to see them shake hands at the net

I'd also like to see:
Djokovic v Janowicz - with Janowicz's quote about Djokovic being 'fake' on the big screen.
Dimitrov v Stepanek - winner goes out for dinner with Sharapova.
Federer v Nadal - with wooden racquets.
I've veered a little of topic, haven't I?...

Re: Dream WTF's lineup
Nadal vs Verdasco ( I mean, I am left-handed)
Federer-Djokovic- My friends and I stole the "Be quiet" put down in high school from this.
Tsonga-Gasquet - I would probably pass out if they both simultaneously played to their abilities.
Anderson-Monfils- I dont know, i just want it

perhaps a little sooner than i had hoped but it seems my threads always end up going off on an unexpected tangent.
For instance my thread about 5 questions to players turned into who is the hottest female then male tennis player!
SO i guess I am used to it.

Nadal dislikes low-bouncing surfaces, so why would he want the aggravation to play on HC that hurts him physically?

I am indeed a Scrubs fans, at least for first 5 series or so (funnily enough I'm rewatching series 5 atm!). I think the quality started to tail off a bit after that. Still watchable though!

Re: Dream WTF's lineup
As Jd said, (at the end of season 5 when he found out that kim was actually single despite wearing a wedding ring. "Turk.. Keys!" so he runs downstairs and catches them from his car after turk threw them out the window) "YAHTZEE!"
next time i think i will post the clip and save me the hassle of the above. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uw31kLqfnvY
But yes from 1-5 it got better and better, (4 and 5 are the best), 6 was great but it went downhill after 5, 7 was decent, 8 was awful and 9 was an abomination, how dare they still call it scrubs after that garbage!
Good stuff HM.
While im at it. Leeds united fan? blackadder fan? monty python fan?

Re: Dream WTF's lineup
Federer vs Dimitrov (Sampras 71, Fed 81, Dimitrov 91 - there's a symmetry in Grigor meeting Roger)
Ferrer vs Granollers (to make ATP do something...anything!)
Nadal vs Djokovic (enough said)
Gulbis vs Murray (to see who flares the most!)

Re: Dream WTF's lineup
Good comparison and question LS. In my opinion yes, it's not just the turgid lack of game variation, it's the agricultural poise and technique he adopts with every shot along with the pained vocal and grimace like he's just been harpooned from the side of court. Gilbert wasn't great though - he invented the term "junkball tennis".
Here's the Granollers seed plough at full tilt complete with harpooned grunt: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nUcymJTm0gs

Re: Dream WTF's lineup
in regards to your ferrer vs granollers point. What could the atp do to change that?
If its dull whatever way you look at it surely its not good tennis anyway.
Would you want the atp to ban them both ?

Federer, Nadal, Tsonga, Gasquet, Raonic, Nishikori, Delpo, and Tomic provided he's in decent nick.
LS, I knew I recognised your name from the old 606 for a reason - you're a Leeds fan! Well, that and your startling charisma and attractiveness, of course

haha! MOT!
I think for tomic to play well it would have to be in aus or maybe get hewitt to ask him to a practice session again

Re: Dream WTF's lineup
Ferrer and Granollers are your staple claycourter types that have been able to transpose their limited counter punching games to other slower surfaces. ATP can increase variety across tournaments (via TD agreements) to reduce the preponderance of one playing style. Granollers in the 90s would have likely been an average claycourter at best - he's not even as good as Felix Mantilla - and struggled elsewhere, his game off clay looks wooden to say the least. It's not about bans, just widening styles play to make guys like Granollers less likely to do as well all year long without pushing their own games to grow.

Re: Dream WTF's lineup
We saw how good Muster was in the 90s - peak 95 Muster would push Nadal very hard - on clay but he struggled off it. Can you imagine these days, Muster would be a brute all year long to play, kind of like a much much better Ferrer. Not quite a Nadal, but probably not too far off.

Lydian what are your thoughts on guga?
He was before my time really but from what ive seen he was beautiful to watch. SOme have called him the "picasso" of tennis.
What about him vs nadal?

Re: Dream WTF's lineup
Yeah Guga was a cracking player to watch with THAT SHBH. I remember watching him at RG coming through round after round of tough 5 setters against great players. He did well off clay too winning WTF one year. Against Nadal I think he would still come up short more often than not....Nadal would pepper the BH like he does with Fed to draw the error, albeit Guga had a better clay BH then Roger, plus Guga wasn't quite as good a mover being the big guy he was at 6'3. Would be a fascinating match up though and in 3 setters Guga would pose serious problems. Another good clay match up would be Lendl vs Nadal too.

Re: Dream WTF's lineup
I just thought he would be more successful than feds has as he has that 6'3 height but I agree guga's shbh would get tired I think and get broken down.
2bh is there going to be any player who wouldn't come up short against nadal on clay? Who knows with borg.

Guga didn't have the fitness either.
Borg is a good shout, Wilander perhaps too. Borg is a beast to beat in any era.
Here's Guga vs Sampras clip at Miami final 2000. Note Sampras big serve down the middle...and radar only says 122mph...today that would be mid130s no doubt.

Re: Dream WTF's lineup
I want to see the best players - there is no point excluding Nadal because I don't particularly like his play. The big 4 have the rivalry which makes a match between any of them at least interesting to watch and, obviously, each on their day can produce exceptional tennis.
Tsonga because of the group below them he plays the most interesting tennis and appears probably less fearful in a big 4 match-up. Haas because it would be great to see him make it back to the top table after all his injuries down the years - I don't think he has ever actually played the year-end champs. Tomic because he is the most varied of the youngsters and Dolgopolov because I like his crazy game but he's never going to make the most of it.
