Davis cup - GB vs Russia thread MUST READ
First topic message reminder :
Evans and ward/baker in the singles tomorrow. Tough ask against the Russians especially without Murray.

I am watching the live feed on LTA site. Enjoying watching Ward holding his own. Nice to see GB male singles players other than Murray coping with pressure points at DC. It is a relatively new experience (since Henman / Rusedski obviously)

Re: Davis cup - GB vs Russia thread MUST READ
Seriously tense stuff - Wardy has done brilliantly to get to this position.
Holding on and seeing the job through might be a big shot in the arm for his career.
Have always been of the view that the difference between players outside the top 20 was marginal and essentially about temperament, handling pressure etc...
For some reason, second tier Brits have always struggled more than most in this area.
Who was the last mentally tough, non world-class British player? Probably Jezza...

Absolutely brilliant stuff from Wardy!!
Balls of steel and brilliant under pressure.
What's impressed me here is how close we've kept it even when the Russians have turned us over.
The only lop-sided rubber in this was the doubles...
Think it's 50-50 now as to who wins it.

Russia are still the favourite but Evans has beaten better players than Donskoy in his time (Klizan) so don't count him out.

Re: Davis cup - GB vs Russia thread MUST READ
Wardy's ranked where, about 220 in the world?
Hopefully this will give him a lot of mojo/confidence to kick on and improve that ranking. He's got the potential to be top 100 IMO.
First set of the last match might be crucial - winning it might see the Russian fall apart, but above all else it has to be competitive and come down to a 7-6 or worst a single break.

It must help his confidence.
What is great is to see GB performing well without Andy Murray. There was too long a stretch where he was winning all his matches but no-one else was so it is good to see the others stepping up. They need to be able to perform at this level without him if they are hoping to get promoted otherwise we will be back in the old situation which was awful.

Ah yes, play-off vs Monaco, loser goes down to the fourth division.
Lucky for us that happened just after Rusedski became a Brit and Henman was coming through...

I think if Evans wins this set it is all over. Can't see Donskoy having the stomach or the energy to come back from two sets down.

I feel certain now that the winner of this set will win the match. Donskoy breaks back and we are back on serve in the second set.

Regardless of the result, we'll have won more sets than Russia.

With GB's luck, even if Evans does pull this off we'll no doubt draw Spain in the play-off or something

Probably make the odds about evens now. This is not over by any means. If Evans doesn't keep his focus it will be 2-2 in no time.
