Top 10 Worst sequels ever made!!

I really do miss the 80s.

Taken 2. Most cynical piece of filming. Ever.

The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Load of 3. Turned a gem of a first film into a crime against narrative. Biggest mastubatory use of CGI.

Die Hard. Increasingly tired and cynical series.

Pirates of the Caribbean. The first one somehow made money. A lot of money. The second one saw it could continue to make money. The third one found that you could sink to the absurd and preposterous and still make money. The fourth, we can do anything and we will still make money.

Star Wars prequels. George Lucas. You don't need actors. You just need merchandising. Ja Ja Blinks sums them all up. Episodes IV, V and VI were all shamelessly stolen from Japanese films, Nazi propaganda, Westerns and Flash Gordon but all integrated into a seemingly original and compelling way. The first three episodes became crude pastiches of more recent and well known films and for that reason didn't make them stand out in the collective memory.

I consider these blockbuster sequels more cynical than the trashy 80s sequels. Shouldn't come as a surprise though as the overwhelming majority of the top 100 most grossing films are from book adapatations, video games and sequels or remakes. When it comes to making money it pays to put your money in something you know will get you a big audience.

A really bad sequel for me is one (or two, or three, or four!!!) that totally remove themselves from the original both in tone and content.

Therefore, Die Hard and Star Wars prequels, I couldn't really say were dreadful as they stick to a formula...it might be a repeated one but they stick to principles and are classic sequels in that they are a continuation of a story and the characters remain largely unchanged in nature.

The two worst sequel chain movies for me both included Stallone.

The John Rambo of First Blood, a richly drawn and realistically complex character who becomes violent as he rages against confinement and control, would never in a million years have morphed into John Rambo with the plastic-toy hefty machine guns and oiled perma-tan. The Rambo of the sequels is a cardboard cut-out comic strip hero, the Rambo of the first movie was a brooding veteran struggling with PTSD and his rage was actually directed at war itself and what it had done to him.

So too, Rocky. The first is a real story about a 'real' boxer struggling through the misery of nothing to try and gain something. A real, genuinely moving meditation on the loneliness of trying to box yourself out of the back streets.

The other Rockys...well, comic strip stuff again with American flags and robotic Russians. They bear little relationship to the realistic figure struggling through the first movie.

Ill try and pick some sequels that no one has mentioned yet, apologies if they have though.

Robocop 2
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
Teen Wolf 2
Wall Street; Money Never Sleeps
The Fly 2
Cars 2
Tron Legacy
The Sting 2

I would disagree a few of those:

Transformers 2 - the first was a pile of poop, so hardly a poor sequel!
A v P - I actually thought it was alright and certainly as good as the film it followed.
And Cars 2 was quite good too. The others though are spot on.

I watched Wrong Turn 4 last night.
Pointless film.

....took a wrong turn when you decided to watch it? I know the feeling.

Bizarrely, I really enjoyed Wrong Turn 2.

Quite a good little horror film. Didnt really enjoy the original mind

Somehow worst than the original.

I was only exposed to The Room a few weeks ago, needless to say, it's just hilarious.

I watched Dog Soldiers yesterday which was pretty cringe-worthy at times. I then learnt that they nearly made a sequel. I can only imagine that such a sequel would have ended up being mentioned in this thread.

Airplane 2: The Sequel. Poor sequel to one of life's funniest films.

Didn't think Fletch Lives was as good as Fletch.

Likewise, National Lampoons European Vacation, Christmas Vacation and Vegas Vacation, were not as good as National Lampoons Vacation.

Christmas Vacation was quite funny, don't think many comedies are as good as the original Vacation thought, the scene with the dog, the scene with the grandmother, the meeting with the redneck family...quality.

Fletch is one of my all time favourite films.

Chevy Chase is quality. The actor.
Never been to the place.

Maybe Blues Brothers 2000 ruined itself and Goodman's agent advised him badly on that one?

Goodman, on form, is both very funny and icily menacing...in the one character...in the one movie.

Having said that, Evan Almighty was a low, low, low, low point in his career....

I hear they're making Ghostbusters 3. With the original cast returning.

Was pretty bad but don't think we can blame him entirely for that - though he should shoulder some of the blame for appearing in it. The entire film was based on a vaguely amusing idea which was unsustainable for an hour and a half.

The first 20 minutes of Jeepers Creepers is brilliant. Everything that follows is rubbish.

Spent thirty odd years of my life think Superman 2 was better than 1........

Dog Soldiers is one of the best films of all time!!! Kinda glad they didnt do a sequel though as it was going to be about a team of Americans who turn up to investigate what happened - cue all the cliches and stereotypes that the 1st one purposefully avoids.

Funnily enough I have never watched Highlander 2. I have seen the first one (great film) and randomly enough I have seen number 3 with Mario Van Peebles in. It was always one of my aims to watch number 2 to see exactly how they went from Connor McLeod being the last one left to there actually being more. I now realise fate was doing me a favour and I wont bother!!!
