Top 5 Transfer Bargains of the 21st Century Empty Top 5 Transfer Bargains of the 21st Century

Post by VDT Tue 09 Apr 2013, 9:41 am

Bit bored in work so this morning a guy i follow on Twitter posted his Top 5 Transfer Bargains of the 21st Century and thought i'd rob his idea as i think it would make a interesting discussation:

@FootieGossMan (i'll give him a plug as i'm robbing his idea) Top 5 was:

1. Gareth Bale - Southampton to Tottenham for £5,000,000
2. Robin Van Persie - Feyernood to Arsenal for £2,750,000
3. Vincent Kompany - Hamburg to Manchester City for £6,000,000
4. Tim Cahill - Millwall to Everton for £1,500,000
5. JoeHart - ShrewsburyTown to Manchester City - £100,000

Heres a few of mine:
Think United only paid 6-7 Million for Vidic and Just over 12 Million for Ronaldo
Everton paid £ 5 millions Leighton Baines and his been beast since signing and sure they only spent £1 Million on Mikel Arteta then sold him for £10 Million

My Top 5
1. Ronaldo - United For £12 Million
2. GarethBale - Tottenham for £5 Million
3. Van Persie - Arsenal for £2.75 Million
4. Vidic - United - £6-7 Million
5. Cahill - Everton for £1.5 Million

I'm not including Free Transfers!!!

Anelka would be a good shout. Arsenal sold him for like £23m after signing him for 500k. He was immense back in the day and was instrumental in the 1998 season guiding them to the double. Bargain and then financial payback.

What about Frank Lampard £11m, Petr Cech for £7m, Joe Cole £6.6m, Ashley Cole £5m?

When you consider how much is spent on English players these days Joe and Ashley were steals.

You need to base it on the time and corresponding British and world record transfers (to get an idea of the market value at the time).

Many of people's suggestions weren't really bargains even if they turned out to be great players for what on the outset is a relatively low amount. Eh Henry signed for £11 million in 1999, when 15 mil for shearer was the highest paid by a British team and the world record was 21 million (broken that summer mind).

Thinking about i've put Ronaldo - United For £12 Million as my number 1 but he was a unknown 17 year old when he signed for United. so was it really a bargain? Might have to change my list.

Here's a few from the last couple of years that I think have been absolute bargains!

Demba Ba from west ham to Newcastle on a free

Cabaye to Newcastle for 2.5m

Michu to Swansea for around 2m

Van der Vart to spurs 8m

You could probably make this list out of players signed from West Ham. Lampard, Cole, Defoe, Glen Johnson, Carrick. We didnt get a good deal on any of them.

He was £5m + Gallas which before the transfer seemed a bit in Chelsea's favour and afterwards it's a steal if you look at how Gallas played for Arsenal compared to Cole at Chelsea.

RVP wasn't very good for several years after Arsenal signed him, I'd stop short of calling him a bargain as he cost them about £30m in wages before he hit form Laugh

How about Roy Keane?

Bought for a sack of spuds from Cobh Ramblers and then sold for a British transfer fee record at the time.

Then again Man Utd also got a bargain when they bought him.

What? You expected him to stay and waste a year of his career in a lower league? Tried his nuts off to keep Forest up playing in a variety of positions. Robert Rosario on the other hand..............

I would think RvP only cost about £ 20m in wages. I mean, you arent gonna pay a guy you bought for £2,75 £100k a week, and considering that Cole left because they wouldnt pay £55k, I assume RvP wasnt earning more than him at the time (if he was, then Cole was absolutely right to go).

gutted to see go in the 90's was Lars Bohinen because I hate Blackburn and I used to love his warm up routine.
