Does the current Jr. Welterweight/ Welterweight have the strongest depth of competition of all time?
Was just reading a few posts re: death of boxing etc. despite the fact it is still a key Olympic sport and one of the very few sports which can command PPV fee's as well being home to the top 2 richest athletes of 2012... I was interested to see the Rings rankings of the LWW & WW divisions. Just running down the names, there seems to be a wide range of talent out there which I can't remember for a while:
Mayweather
Pacquiao
Marquez
Matthysse
Peterson
Khan
Brook
Garcia
Alexander
Bradley
Thurman
Guerrero
Ortiz
Rios
Alvarado
All the above fighters could make 147lbs if required, even though some still campaign at 140lb and look huge in the process. The above is without naming the likes of Malliganagi, Berto, Judah and Cotto who could all make 147lbs if required.

Beyond the top three all of whom are best there best it's competitive without being particularly great, the late 90's early 00's would be stronger with Trinidad, De La Hoya, Mosley and Tzuyu the frontrunners beyond that Campas, Carr, Forrest, Mayorga would give the best of the rest today a good argument.

Of its "depth of competition" than you have to admire it as there are alot of boxers who at wall around world class and have exciting styles, although of all time may be a little too much

I'm sure a list of fighters like that all in one weight class like they would have been in the original 8 weights set up and that would be seen as something of a golden age. 13 of them I think are present or former and the remaining 2 are probable future champs. That lot fighting over 1 spot as champion would give real meaning to the word.
I cannot see how it would actually be feasible for most people to get a shot at the title if Mayweather was the recognised champ and he fights twice a year at best. Fighting your way up the rankings against that good competition with all the different styles even the best would pick up losses. Whoever's number 1 when the planets have aligned and Mayweather decides to grace us all with his presence would be a real lottery.
