Best film from the 80s - Round 4 of the Movie Cup
Vote for your favourite 2 - voting ends on Monday.
Everyone allowed to vote in this, not just the people who nominated.
Below are the reasons for nominations (where provided).
Next week is films based on a comic book or comic book character:
Stand by Me - one of the few Stephen King stories to make a successful transfer to screen, this is one of those films I can watch again and again. Great build-up & unsentimental climax, you'd have to be a bit disturbed not to be wracked with nostalgia.
The Empire strikes back - The first sequel to outstrip an original. A critically acclaimed success and action packed from start to finish.
ET - Possibly the greatest film of all time and not just the 80s. A story which still carries an emotional wallop even today. Brilliant acting and story from the greatest director of his generation. This has to win!
Die Hard - Who could forget this amazing film with hard hitter John McClain(Bruce wills fantastic performance) and the amazing ride which was "Yippee Kiy Yay"
Airplane - It's just clearly the best comedy film of all time. It launched a new era of spoof comedies and sight gags, for which I am eternally grateful. Even people who haven't seen it know quotes from it. It transcended!
Blade Runner - A Sci-Fi classic film that manages to equal the book it was based on, the outstanding Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. Exceptional acting and direction throughout but the key features here were the existential questions asked through the plot and characters and the sublime way Scott subtly makes suggestions regarding the nature of identity. A massive influence on works in every conceivable medium.
Ferris Bueller's Day Off - a film that needs no introduction or case made for it - it simply is one of the best films ever made, never mind from the 80s. There has never been a better feel-good movie than Ferris Bueller.
The Terminator - The Terminator made the reputation of cowriter/director James Cameron and solidified the stardom of Arnold Schwarzenegger. The movie begins in a post-apocalyptic 2029, when Los Angeles has been largely reduced to rubble and is under the thumb of all-powerful ruling machines. Kyle Reese (Michael Biehn), a member of the human resistance movement, is teleported back to 1984. His purpose: to rescue Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton), the mother of the man who will lead the 21st-century rebels against the tyrannical machines, from being assassinated before she can give birth. Likewise thrust back to 1984 is The Terminator (Schwarzenegger), a grim, well-armed, virtually indestructable cyborg who has been programmed to eliminate Sarah Connor. This is the film in which Schwarzenegger declared "I'll be baaaack"
Back To The Future - A time travelling masterpiece. Michael J Fox's best film. Who didn't want to own a DeLorean?? One of those films that gets quoted even now.
The Goonies - Hey yoooooooooouuuu guyyyyyssss vote for this! This film defines life as a child growing up in the 80s, hanging out with your friends on bmxs, playing out & exploring, finding physically and mentally handicapped members of criminal gangs whilst searching for underground pirate treasure to stop you being relocated, we've all been there. So if you want to do the truffle shuffle one more time vote for this!

I voted Raiders and Back to the Future, even though Raiders isn;t even the best Indiana Jones film.
No St Elmo's Fire? I'm firing off a letter of complaint to The Times.

Got to be Empire Strikes back and Ferris Buellar's Day Off. Airplane nearly got my vote, but when I saw Ferris Buellar's Day Off there was no other choice.

I loved Ferris Buellers Day Off as well. Breakfast Club would have been in there for me too.

Goodfellas was 1990, think it would be a deserving winner in most decades.

The Breakfast Club was my second choice but I wasn't sure how many votes it would receive. It was brilliant, even if I only saw it in 2010.

You pick one film Adam so you have some blame upon you especially as I have a huge inkling as to which film you picked (bug-eyed turd alien).

Re: Best film from the 80s - Round 4 of the Movie Cup
First choice was easy - The Terminator. Hope some dodgy films later in the series don't take away from people's opinions of how good the first one was. I reckon it was better than T2, an opinion I know many would disagree with. I preferred the atmosphere. Simplicity, darkness and real fear. It was brilliant.
Second choice was more difficult, between Ghostbusters and BTTF really. Went for the latter.

Terminator and Stand By Me were my picks. Although Airplane ("And don't call me Shirley" ) wasn't far behind.

When you look at taht list, its really hard to argue that the 80s were full of great blockbusters that hasnt been repeated since.
This has been the best list so far in my opinion!

Maybe the overall winner should be forced to watch every film from every round in exact order, and write a review?
That would be handy for the v2journal.

Fair enough, good to know my rage was misplaced. As you were folks, Raging Bull was 1980 though I believe, my Scorsese based rage is back on.

Only picking one on that list.. It would be the only one out of my top 100 from the 80's!!
Back to future. Its almost perfect for what it is. Great concept , great film, great directing, It is just seemless.

I dont think so.
All three are great films in their own right. If the sequels hadnt hapenned, BTTF would still be on this list.
Re: Best film from the 80s - Round 4 of the Movie Cup
I mean more so in that do the sequels add to the original or detract from it ala the Matrix?
I think the 2nd was a great film but the third really didn't do much for me.

It does have a soundrtrack by Huey Lewis and the News though, that has to count against it.

I would have thought that Huey Lewis and the News would have featured highly on this weeks Yorkshire Download Chart, just behind Martika, Tiffany and Hue & Cry.

I chose ghostbusters - my single favourite movie of all time
Second guess was much tougher but went with Die Hard

Why would us Yorkshire folk need to look outside the county when we have The Wedding Present and Pulp Adam

It's the sequel to Pulp Fiction, Adam was the one in the gimp mask.

Easy first pick of Back To The Future for me. Second pick was tough, could have been any of Raiders of the Lost Ark, Terminator, Goonies, Die Hard or Ferris Bueller. Was very tempted to go with Ferris Bueller but opted for Die Hard in the end.

It's a great action film, but on this list, I'd rank it right near the bottom. Almost all of the others are superior to it.

I'm astonished at how well Back to the Future is doing. I hated the first two films, and the third was only okay due to the Wild West setting. They're really long-winded and have terrible scripts.

Get out!
Ferris Buellar is an excellent film, it's aged really well, it's funny, it's sweet. Die Hard is purely an action film, a good one, but action films are probably the worst kinds of films anyway.
