Purdy in for Brook Empty Alexander vs Purdy set for 18th may

Post by inman124 Fri 19 Apr 2013, 7:53 pm

That's according to Richard Schaffer, deal made for Alexander to face mandatory Lee Purdy. What do people make of this?

Is that a joke? Devon Alexander hammers him all night, complete outclass, mid KO

Just saw Eddie Hearn tweet about this. Don't mind this fight, Purdy always comes to fight and if Alexander has an off night he could pull it out of the bag.

Thought this fight prob would of happened. Well at least its a little bit interesting die to a Brit fighting. Would any of us have paid much attention if it was against the other guys Zavick etc.

Alexander beats everyone in the top 10 anyway (including Brook). He will fight Floyd next May. That's more or less written in the stars

Not boring, but I fear Purdy will look rather amateur lunging andmissing and eventually gassing due to little time to prepare. He's big at the weight and powerful, i give him that, only that.

Yea I agree, to be honest, he should just get the shot just to show him his level, Alexander's style is too trick for Purdys, he get taken out around 8th with uppercuts. Best of luck to him though!

Alexander has only slaughtered Urango, the other fights have been bedtime story material.

Cried to get out of the Bradley fight....screamed "ahhh my eye and pointed to the one wihout the cuts" thought he would have got the robbery, although he's stole some wins since then, Kotelnik being the worst. Got out threw and out landed. Hardly a beast of a fighter.

not sure why purdy deserves a shot, he hasn't really earned it. i would put denton vessell above him for next in line at a world title.

Not sure if this has been posted elsewhere but:

Lee Purdy given IBF world title fight as Kell Brook replacement
Colchester boxer Lee Purdy has been handed a world title fight in the United States next month.

The 25-year-old takes on Devon Alexander in Atlantic City on 18 May in a bout for the IBF welterweight title.

Alexander had been due to fight Kell Brook but the Sheffield man withdrew on Friday because of a foot injury.

Purdy, who currently holds the IBF international welterweight belt, fought as recently as 10 March when he stopped Mexican Cosme Rivera in round nine.

Of his 24 professional fights, the former British champion has won 20, drawn one and lost three.

Purdy's promoter Eddie Hearn tweeted: "It's a funny old game how things play out @LeePurdy1 will challenge @DAlexandereal for the IBF World title on May 18th in Atlantic City."

The fight will count as American Alexander's mandatory defence of his belt which means Brook could have to wait up to nine months for another shot at the IBF title.

Although the 26-year-old Sheffield boxer will remain as the mandatory challenger for the winner of the 18 May, he confirmed when withdrawing that he could look elsewhere for a world title shot.

Tailor made for Alexander and he should win comfortably setting up a possible September fight against Floyd

Canelo is too big a risk for Floyd with his new 30 month 6 fight record breaking deal. Alexander is American and has already been touted as a floyd opponent so with brook out of the way Alexander has a easy ride to Floyd in a unification bout

Demeans the sport world title fights like these..................

When I was growing you rarely saw more than two Brits a year fighting for top honors now every chump is getting a shot...........

Too many chefs spoil the brew for that really talented special British guy.. (with GSOH and own transport, likes eating out Wink ) ...who has to share status with these guys.......

Mayweather vs Canelo won't happen because Canelo is really a 160 fighter.

Hearn was probably in danger of losing a fair bit of money and, more importanty, respect with the Stateside promotors and TV people if he walked away from this one.

No fighter - he's a guy they can't trust.
2nd tier fighter - he's a guy who can't back up his big talk

Rock...hard place for Eddie. Purdy gets his "Rocky" moment, good luck to him but let's hope the originl fight isn't blighted by injury or delay again as I think Brook will end up being the guy who Adam Smith calls "the greatest world class fighter never to fight for a world title blah blah blah"

Alexander is on another level. Dunno about his chin. Has he been decked or wobbled by a fat featherweight?

Ha. Not yet. Alexander is the better fighter. Purdy isn't rated anywhere. A one sided drubbing. Hope he gets well paid for his troubles.

Don't con anyone into thinking you're a 154lb world champion if you wont fight someone because they're too big, harsh as it is if Mayweather doesn't take that fight it's a clear case of avoidance.
