England Under 20 coaches Nick Walshe and Ian Peel have named their 28-man squad ahead of their IRB Junior World Championship campaign in France, which kicks off with a game against their French hosts on June 5.
The squad contains players with a huge amount of Aviva Premiership, A-League and RFU Championship experience, and Head Coach Walshe is pleased with the players at his disposal as they look to move on from last season’s seventh-place finish.
Eight members of the squad played in last year’s competition while the likes of Jack Nowell, Ben Howard, Jack Clifford, Ollie Devoto and Henry Slade have all played Aviva Premiership rugby over recent weeks.
Walshe said: “We enjoyed a good Six Nations and on the back of that, competition for places has been high and some good players have missed out. However, we’re very pleased with the 28 selected. The games come thick and fast in this tournament, we’ve got a very tough group but we’re excited by that challenge.”
After France, Six Nations winners England face title-holders South Africa before coming up against USA, who are competing in the JWC for the first time in five years.
Walshe added: “All our attention is on that first game against the French, we did well against them in the Six Nations but this will be a totally different game. It’s one we’re looking forward to.”

Has somebody put some booze in the kicker's water bottles? That was terrible from the French kicker.

Ref has got to have a word with the French soon? They are giving away a lot of penalties at the breakdown.

England are very patient with that driving lineout aren't they.

Some of these English forwards really do have jubblies for hands, the basics have been shocking at times.

Congrats England, from what I saw looked comfortable, and dealt with a potential banana skin first up.
England are one of my tips to win the tournament, if they could get through this I think they'll have too much for SA, and then the semi's could well be NZ.

I'm not sure about Devoto at FB - he's a decent prospect but I haven't seen evidence he's got the pace to reach international standard at that level. Still the JWC has strange rules so it's difficult to be too critical of any selection at this stage.
Isn't Luke C-D really a prop too, Dave?
I'd say it's fairly clear England see LCD as a hooker going forward.
Too many errors, but not handling wise, it was more decision-making. Early engagement at the first scrum was daft, as was kicking the ball out on the full shortly afterwards, and then two fairly straightforward penalties missed. Then it got worse, with the the penalty they gave away at the start of the second half being ridiculous - secure the ball then kick for territory, don't try and play out from the back with your first play, particularly when your FB has no real pace.
Still, beating the hosts 1st game up is a decent start.

Did Price get on and if so how did he go? He's highly rated at Tigers but suffered a neck injury on his league debut back in Feb/March time. He's had a couple of games for Notts and played in the Deacon testimonial game since but I've not seen or heard much.

Is there not a better blindside than Moriarty, he got a well deserved red and ban in the 6N and seems to have made a lot of errors and conceded several penalties.
Not helped by the woeful ref but Sisi or Wells must be better options.

Ref was so harsh on us at the breakdown, but I don't think he penalised them even once! They seemed to be able to dive off their feet or hang on for as long as they wanted, yet he penalised us at the first hint.

Didn't see the game but it's a shame England seem to be falling back at this level a little and the Boks are improving.

England over complicated their play, made errors and were punished by a ruthless Bok team who set up with a far simpler game plan based on support. Hence why we were caught out at the breakdown and they weren't.

England coach Nick Walshe: "After 20 minutes I thought we were the better side for the 60 minutes and they were just magnificent to come back from where we were to how we ended the game."
Can I assume that's an English translation from a French report on an English coach's comments?

One thing I noticed today was the scrums went really well with the referee waiting for the scrum to stay stationery before inviting the nine to feed it in. Is this something that's been trialled by the IRB?
Re: England U20 Squad for JWC (Team to face S.A pg 2)
I would say that we've still got a good chance of going through as fourth placed runners up as long as no losing teams get two bonus points in the next round of matches. Need to go out and score as many trys as possible against the USA though.

Terrible start, and I'm not really sure what the ref was doing in the first 20 minutes, but after that I was actually as impressed with the England side as I have been for a couple of years. Pleasing how we came back at the breakdown.
Hopefully the other results will go out way.

29-0 after 20 minutes, this isn't pretty for anyone who wants to see rugby spread around the world. I could see England winning this by 70+ points.

agree. I started watching this but although england is really solid in what they do, it is really too one-sided. the other game looks more interesting.

I've put on the Ireland/ NZ game, I have no wish to see a bunch of kids downhearted in this manner, even if England are on the winning side.
NZ have really turned it on against the Irish, Savea looks like some player!

Re: England U20 Squad for JWC (Team to face S.A pg 2)
Ireland need France to beat S.A. by more than 7 points to give Ireland a chance:
http://www.irb.com/jwc/
That would leave S.A on 9 points to Ireland's 10. I am not sure the points difference though, France might then go through.
Edit: no France would be on 9 points too.

Final score 19-26. Good effort but our halfbacks need to have a ROG kicking lesson asap. First time I see a SA team with such a mediocre line out and passive scrum. If they dont fix that they are out next. Their fullback is quite sensational though.
