Choose your favourite
Films with names in the title - movie cup round 6
The Brahma Bull takes the lead at the half way stage as we go into round 6.
Dont forget to vote for your 2 favourite films this round.
Next weeks competition is to choose your favourite film from the year you were born in.
Anyway, here are this weeks nominations (where sent!):
Leon
Anchorman:the legend of Ron Burgundy
Mad Max 2
Life Of Brian
Waynes World
Jackie Brown
Ray
There's Something about Mary
Kill Bill
Freddie Got Fingered
Ace Ventura
Life of Brian - sheer genius, easily the funniest comedy of all time and, as a vicious commentary of just about every aspect of civilisation & religion, would be a contender for greatest film ever if it wasn't for the slightly OTT spaceship time
Mad Max 2 - Gibbo at his best, beats a terrific original.
Anchorman - One of the best comedy's there is insane laughs, great quotes just plain fantastic and all i can see is if you vote for it then you can "stay classy"
Jackie Brown: An adaptation of the Elmore Leonard book Rum Punch. A cracking crime/drama which revitalised Pam Griers career. Also boasts a supporting cast of De Niro, Samuel L Jackson, Michael Keaton and Bridget Fonda. One of those films that everybody has to see.
Something about Mary - The comedy of that decade and one of the funniest timeless classics in comedy. The fact that this film still feels fresh today, shows how good it is. From the soundtrack to career bests from the whole cast, this has to win!
Wayne's World - "it will be mine. Oh yes, it will be mine", said Wayne Campbell. I think he was talking about your vote, which Wayne's World totally deserves as the best film with a name in the title ever made. Tia Carrere in stunning form ("Scha-wing!"), Rob Lowe resurrecting his career, and more great quotes than almost any other film ever made - if you don't vote for this, I have to ask you: " "a-bumhole-says-what?"
Ray - Jamie Foxx's brilliant acting and a movie about a legend that didn't pull its punches and captured the flaws, brilliance and spirit and most of all tragedy of Ray Charles perfectly
Freddy Got Fingered - I am testing the culture of the forum!
Ace Ventura pet detective - Jim Carey at his best, funny from start to finish, with memorable quotes! "Do not go in there!"

Thats not the name of the film thought is it.
Harry Potter would have been alright as they appear in the title

Try selling an expensive item to some who pays you with a cheque that bounces higher than Katie Price's t*ts on a space hopper and tell me you wouldn't be ringing the Police.mystiroakey wrote:A bad cheque - Is that a crime??

only an idiot would take a cheque in this day and age.. even back then you had cheque garantees.
but yeah i suppose your right- some muppets may have given over the goods before cheques had cleared(on a non business transaction)
But i do get the occasional bad chequee. It happens-and trust me i dont ring the police!!

I'd keep quiet about that if I was you, I have a feeling your reaction to getting bad cheques may involve someone else phoning the police afterwards...and the paramedics!mystiroakey wrote:only an idiot would take a cheque in this day and age.. even back then you had cheque garantees.

Re: Films with names in the title - movie cup round 6
no I run an electrical/fire testing company- many small jobs pay by cheques for boiler servicing, gas safe certs, pat test, pri test, fire risk assesments. some jobs are small value- and some cheques bounce..
business will allways get about 1-4% bad debts and its life- and you cant go to the police, its not there area., its a civil issue. and taking any off them down that route costs more than you gain anyway.
you just account for it.. Us in small businesses havent got the clout off an o2 or sky where there have massive debt companys on there books that seek the money out. Other companies insure against it. But from experience we get less bad debts than the cost of using debt collection agencies or insuring against possible bad debts..

Seems like there's less films to vote on than usual?
Would have picked Ip Man had it been there but can understand why it might be seen as a gamble sort of choice. Out of those on the list went with Anchorman and Life of Brian.
I hope there's going to be a worst film category?

Re: Films with names in the title - movie cup round 6
I went for Anchorman and Kill Bill, although I feel I probably should have gone for Life of Brian over Kill Bill as I enjoyed Life of Brian more, but didn't want to vote for two comedies, and weirdly (considering my taste in comedy) I think Anchorman is funnier than Life of Brian. Although Life of Brian is probably my third best comedy film behind Shaun of the Dead (a good option for this round) and Anchorman.

It is possible that my love for Anchorman has become exaggerated over the years in response to the hate it gets from some corners, Life of Brian doesn't quite have the same dividing effect.

I may be in the minority but I fail to "get" Monthy Python.
For me, it's no more amusing that listening to Chris Evans or Chris Moyles sat with their acolytes having a circle jerk, praising each other for being brilliant and laughing at how stupid everyone is for not being as good as them.

Life of Brian isn't really typical Monty Python - you're probably referring to the Flying Circus series which tend to push the boundaries of the ridiculous a la Godard rather than being straightforward comedy. I do enjoy the Flying Circus but only in small doses, could understand why not everyone would though. Then again you might not be referring to the Flying Circus, in which case ignore this post. Of course, you might already be ignoring this post, in which case this last point is moot.

Life of Brian seems a more "mainstream" movie but the like of "Holy Grail" and the vast majority of "Meaning of Life" leave me cold. Ironically, there a film called "Holy Flying Circus" which takes a look at the furore surrounding Life of Brian and I quite enjoyed it.

Have made the mistaking of raving about Holy Grail, persuading people to watch it & then cringing in the uncomfortable silence until it's decided to watch something else. Sort of agree with you about Meaning of Life, thought the first half was really funny but the second only sporadically so. Wasn't aware of Holy Flying Circus, just rented it on Lovefilm.

If you're a Python-ite (don't bother googling it, I just made it up) you will probably enjoy it and some of the performances are really good, the fella who plays Cleese is excellent (name escapes me but he's in quite a few things)Galted wrote:DAVE667 wrote:Life of Brian seems a more "mainstream" movie but the like of "Holy Grail" and the vast majority of "Meaning of Life" leave me cold. I voted for Ray among this lot, fabulous film, even if you aren't a Ray Charles fan.
And agree with DAVE about Frankie and Johnny and, especially, "Dave", and would add Bull Durham.

Wayne's world and anchorman are the best movies on that list
Wayne's world is superb with some quality moments
Anchorman is very much the marmite of movies. I love it but appreciate it isn't everyone's cup of tea

Anchorman and Life of Brian. Two sensational films, Anchorman one of my faves of all time. Ace Ventura in third for me too, absolutely love that. Considering my comedy bias i have to say there's something about Mary is one of the most overrated films of all time.
