Indeed. A crying shame. He could have been a cracking player for Scotland and London Irish. He'll be missed and I wish him all the best for the future.

Thom Evans and now Joe Ansbro, Scotland have a shallow enough pool of players without our best guys getting injured.
Such a shame but I wish him all the best in his future endevours.

Heck - thats bad news!
I was always looking forward to that LI center combination that never transpired - Hape and Ansboro.
Feel sorry for the guy - he would have brought that much needed creativity to the Scots backline that they needed so desperately.

Best of luck to him, he was a really good player for Scotland in his all too brief international career. Similar to Sean Maitland I think in so much as he looked like he had a great rugby brain.

Sad to see Ansbro go, but the players welfare must come first. Best of luck to him in whatever he chooses to do next.
Will always remember his headbutt with Strokosch after the win over Australia!

Never realised he broke his C1 vertebrae... thats bad.
A good friend of mine broke their C2 vertebrae and like Ansbro they were in a medical halo for a while. They were told that had they broken C1 paralysis was a likely eventuality. Both are very lucky.
His iconic headbutt with Strokosch will last well into memory thats for sure. But he also had real ability. All the best to him.

Truly sad to hear this. Another Scot with high potential loses his rugby career to injury. He's a well qualified man though, so I'm sure whatever he does he'll do it well!
Good luck to you Joe!

A blow for Scotland, no question. A great athlete, and a strong fearless and direct runner.
Wish him all the very best for what will no doubt be an excellent second career. He's a smart bloke and hopefully will find something equally as fulfilling as playing rugby for Scotland (if that's possible....).

Re: Joe Ansbro to retire from rugby
Absolutely gutted! One of my favourite Scotland players.. I really thought he'd be able to return but I'm glad he is looking after his health and not risking further damage.
His try against Ireland in the pre World Cup warmup was a blinder!
Gutted I'll never see him in a centre partnership with likes of Scott or Dunbar, but I hope he has a successful career in what ever he chooses to do next. Sad day for Scottish rugby. He was Scotland's first black rugby player, and a true gent and all round good bloke.

Such a shame, he could have been a really good player for Scotland for years to come and it must be gutting to have to give up on something he obviously loves
Always sad to see someones playing career ended through injury
Good luck in the future to him
